The Ticket Master is the third episode of the first season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. In this episode, Princess Celestia gives Twilight Sparkle two tickets to the Grand Galloping Gala, but her five friends want to attend.
Production and merchandise[]
Lauren Faust's original version of this episode was 11 minutes long before it went into production under Hasbro. Amy Keating Rogers later helped Faust flesh it out to 22 minutes, which is why both Rogers and Faust receive writing credit.[2] In the first My MLP season 1 scenes video, Big McIntosh reacts happily to the new plow and plows the field in Applejack's gala fantasy. Rogers said that the scene was in the storyboard, but not the script.[3] Mr. Greenhooves was to appear in the episode.[4]
This episode appears in a DVD distributed by Hasbro in multiple countries. Consequently, many of the show's language dubs were introduced via The Ticket Master, instead of the first episode. Clips from this episode were also recycled and used out of context in the iOS app Twilight Sparkle: Teacher for a Day and its Ruckus Reader version Twilight Sparkle's Special Lesson. The clips used were the scene where Spike burps out the letter from Princess Celestia from the start of the episode, part of Rainbow Dash's Imagine Spot where she joins the Wonderbolts and flies with them (with Rainbow Dash airbrushed out of the clip), and the ending where Twilight returns the tickets.
Summary[]
Twilight receives the tickets[]
Twilight Sparkle and Spike are helping Applejack harvest apples when Twilight receives a letter from Princess Celestia containing two tickets to the Grand Galloping Gala. When Spike expresses disinterest in attending, Applejack shares her vision of opening an apple stand at the event so she can earn money for her family.
Just as Twilight offers the second ticket to Applejack, Rainbow Dash suddenly crash-lands on top of them and asks about the gala, explaining how she's dreamed of attending so she can show off her flying stunts to the Wonderbolts and, hopefully, be asked to join their troupe. Applejack and Rainbow Dash argue over the spare ticket until Twilight interrupts and tells them that she will think about it during lunch.
As she heads through town, Twilight comes across Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy, who also want to attend the gala for different reasons: Pinkie wants to play games and party, Rarity dreams about courting Princess Celestia's nephew, and Fluttershy hopes to befriend the exotic animals that live in the castle's gated gardens. Applejack and Rainbow Dash show up and begin arguing with the others about who should attend the gala, prompting Twilight to dismiss them before promising to resolve the issue.
Doing favors for Twilight[]
Twilight considers which of her friends should join her at the gala as she and Spike sit at a table outside a restaurant waiting for their food. She soon notices other ponies rushing inside and realizes it's raining everywhere except at their table. Looking up, Twilight finds Rainbow Dash watching from behind a hole in the clouds just above them and admonishes her not to perform favors in order to get the spare ticket. Rainbow begrudgingly closes the hole, drenching Twilight and Spike in rain and ruining their lunch.
Rarity passes by and brings them to Carousel Boutique where she gives them both makeovers. When it becomes apparent that Rarity is only looking to curry favor for the gala ticket, Twilight chides her and tries to leave but is pulled aside by Applejack, who offers her a cart full of desserts. Twilight refuses and returns home only to find Fluttershy and her animal friends inside cleaning. As Twilight asks them to leave, Pinkie Pie pulls her outside and sings a flattering song while townsfolk toss her into the air. When Pinkie mentions the extra gala ticket aloud, the townsfolk become excited and offer to do favors for Twilight. They chase and eventually corner her, whereupon she teleports herself and Spike back to the library.
Back in the library[]
Twilight discovers her friends already waiting in the library and breaks down, telling them she doesn't want to disappoint anyone. The five friends apologize and say they don't want to go to the gala anymore, leading Twilight to return both tickets to Princess Celestia along with a friendship report reflecting how it can feel bad when you don't have enough to share with all your friends. The princess responds by sending back six tickets, and the other ponies invite Twilight to dinner to celebrate and make amends. Initially upset at being left without a ticket, Spike gets excited when Celestia sends a seventh just for him, though he tries to appear disgusted by it in front of the ponies.
Quotes[]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Twilight Sparkle: Wow, great! I've never been to the gala. Have you, Spike?
- Spike: No, and I plan to keep it that way. I don't want any of that girly frilly frou-frou nonsense.
- Twilight Sparkle: Quiet!
- Pinkie Pie: And then I said "Oatmeal? Are you craz–"
- Twilight Sparkle: Spike, what am I gonna do? All five of my best friends have really good reasons to go to the gala. Applejack, or Rainbow Dash? Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy, Rarity... Oh, who should go with me?
- Savoir Fare: Have you made your decision?
- Twilight Sparkle: I CAN'T DECIDE!
- Spike: Twilight, he just wants to take your order.
- Rarity: We will be the belles of ball, you and I. Everyone will be clamoring for our attention. All eyes will be on us! And then everyone will finally know the most beautiful, most talented, the most sophisticated pony in all Equestria is Rarity the unicorn! ...And Twilight Sparkle, of course.
- Applejack: I got apple pie, apple fritters, apple tarts, apple dumplings, apple crisps, apple crumbles, annnd apple Brown Betty! Uh, the dessert, not my auntie.
- Twilight Sparkle: You're not doing this for the ticket, are you?
- Fluttershy: Oh no, I'm doing this because you're my very best friend. Right, Angel? Oh, yes, we are just doing this for the ticket.
- Twilight Sparkle: PINKIEEEEEEEE!
- Pinkie Pie: Yes, Twilight?
- Twilight Sparkle: At least the other ponies tried to be subtle about the ticket.
- Applejack: I don't want the ticket anymore. You can give it to somepony else. I won't feel bad, I promise.
- Fluttershy: Me too. I feel just awful that I made you feel so awful.
- Pinkie Pie: And me too. It's no fun upsetting your friends.
- Rarity: Twilight, it was unfair of me to try to force you as I did.
- Rainbow Dash: Yes! That means the ticket is mine! Ha ha, [sing-song voice] I got the ticket, I got the ticket—! You know, I haven't perfected my signature moves for the Wonderbolts anyway. I don't need that ticket either.
