Summary[]
The Elements of Harmony[]
After declaring eternal night at the town hall in Ponyville, Nightmare Moon transforms into a cloud of purple smoke and whisks out the door. Twilight Sparkle heads to the Golden Oak Library and tucks Spike into bed before searching for a book about the Elements of Harmony. Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie arrive to ask what she knows, and together they find a book explaining that, out of six elements, only five are known: kindness, laughter, generosity, honesty, and loyalty. The book mentions that the Elements are located in the royal sisters' ancient castle in the Everfree Forest. The ponies head out to look for the Elements, unaware that Nightmare Moon had been observing their conversation the whole time.
The cliff: Element of honesty[]
- "What I'm sayin' to you is the honest truth. Let go, and you'll be safe."
- — Applejack
The ponies enter the Everfree Forest and soon arrive at a cliff. As they stand on its edge, the cloud of purple smoke secretly enters the soil beneath them and breaks it apart, causing the ponies to fall. Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash catch Rarity and Pinkie Pie, but Twilight continues sliding to the edge of a high precipice. As Twilight hangs off the side, Applejack slides next to her and claims she will be safe if she lets go. Twilight initially doubts her but eventually obeys, whereupon Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy catch her midair and bring her safely to the ground.
The manticore: Element of kindness[]
- "Sometimes we all just need to be shown a little kindness."
- — Fluttershy
The ponies continue onward until they encounter an angry manticore. While everyone else tries to forcefully subdue it, Fluttershy intervenes and gently approaches the manticore, who shows her a thorn stuck in its paw. She removes the thorn, pacifying the manticore and allowing the ponies to pass. The discarded thorn dissolves into purple smoke, which zooms away.
The forest: Element of laughter[]
- "You'll see that they can't hurt you; just laugh to make them disappear!"
- — Pinkie Pie
Further along, the group suddenly find themselves surrounded by trees with monstrous faces formed by the magic of the purple smoke. Everyone is scared except for Pinkie, who sings a song that teaches her friends to laugh at their fears. The ponies end up laughing together at the end of the song, which turns the trees back to normal.
The sea serpent: Element of generosity[]
- "I simply cannot have this crime against fabulosity go uncorrected!"
- — Rarity
The ponies come across a river roiled by a sea serpent who became upset when a "tacky little cloud of purple smoke" whisked by and tore off half his mustache. Rarity cuts off her own tail and donates it to repair the mustache, leading the grateful sea serpent to help the ponies cross the now calm river.
The Shadowbolts: Element of loyalty[]
- "I'd never leave my friends hanging."
- — Rainbow Dash
The castle ruins come into view, but the ponies find the path to it blocked by a gorge with a broken bridge. Rainbow Dash flies to the other side to fix the bridge, whereupon three Pegasi appear and invite her to be captain of the Shadowbolts, their group of elite fliers. When Rainbow Dash learns that she must abandon her friends to join the Shadowbolts, she turns down the offer and ties the bridge so the others can cross. The Shadowbolts turn into purple smoke that slithers away.
Nightmare Moon: Element of magic[]
The ponies enter the castle ruins and find five stone orbs, which Twilight believes are the first five Elements of Harmony. The purple smoke enters and creates a whirlwind that teleports Twilight and the orbs to another tower. There, Twilight finds Nightmare Moon standing among the Elements. She draws her away and tries to activate the Elements herself with magic, but her spell fails, and Nightmare Moon shatters the orbs.
Initially distressed over the lost orbs, Twilight hears the approach of her companions as they call out for her and realizes that the spirits of the Elements are present in them. She explains to Nightmare Moon how they represent the Elements of honesty, kindness, laughter, generosity, and loyalty, as fragments of the shattered orbs circle each pony in turn. When Twilight declares her companions as friends, a sixth stone orb magically appears above her, and she addresses Nightmare Moon:
- "When those Elements are ignited by the... the spark that resides in the heart of us all, it creates the sixth element: the element of... magic!"
- — Twilight Sparkle
The orb fragments magically reform into golden jeweled necklaces on the five friends' necks, and Twilight's orb becomes a crown. As the ponies are lifted into the air, a rainbow-colored double helix emerges from them and envelopes Nightmare Moon, and the room becomes flooded with light. When the light fades, the friends discover that the gems on their necklaces resemble their cutie marks, and Rarity's tail has magically grown back.
A bright sunbeam suddenly shines into the room, from which Princess Celestia appears and approaches the ponies. She explains that Twilight had the magic to defeat Nightmare Moon but could only use it once she let true friendship into her heart. Nightmare Moon returns to her original form, Princess Luna, who the friends learn is Celestia's younger sister. Reunited after a thousand years of separation, the two royal sisters become reconciled.
Twilight's new mission[]
Back in Ponyville, Pinkie throws a party to celebrate the royal sisters' reunion. When Twilight tells Celestia that she doesn't want to leave her new friends, Celestia gives her a new mission: to continue studying the magic of friendship in Ponyville and report back her findings. Twilight promises to study harder than ever as the townsfolk around her celebrate.
