The royal guards, some also referred to as the E.U.P. (Earth, Unicorn, Pegasus) Guard of the Protective Pony Platoons,[note 1] are various groups of armored ponies, griffons, Hippogriffs, gargoyles, or other creatures that serve various members of royalty. They act as bodyguards, ceremonial guards in festivities, soldiers, and chauffeurs on several occasions. The guards are generally shown wearing extremely serious expressions and usually don't speak, but when they do, their voice is provided by Jayson Thiessen,[3] Andrew Francis, Peter New, Ian Hanlin, Brian Drummond, Jason Simpson and/or Scott Underwood. Their cutie marks are obscured by their uniforms.

Development and design[]

The royal guards' helmets are reminiscent of Greek Corinthian helmets, Roman "Imperial" helmets, medieval Barbut Helmets, and Qing dynasty Imperial Guard helmets with the helmet crest being the same color as their tails and mane.

M. A. Larson and Lauren Faust have stated on Twitter that they believe Luna's guards are a different race[4][5] from Pegasi and come from "[d]eep caves inside the mountains."[6]

The royal guards, including Luna's bat-winged guards, were featured in a cut scene from Slice of Life in which, in the absence of other ponies, they would have joked around doing impressions of Celestia and Luna.[7]

Michael Vogel suggested an episode about the royal guards, but it was never produced.[8]

Unicorn guards[]

Royal guards trumpeting S1E23

Procession of trumpeters in The Cutie Mark Chronicles.

The unicorn guards first appear in the show's title sequence, standing at the foot of Princess Celestia's throne. Their next appearance is in The Cutie Mark Chronicles. Set in Twilight Sparkle's flashback, eight gray unicorn guards play fanfare for Princess Celestia as she comes on stage and raises the sun for the Summer Sun Celebration. The guards remain expressionless throughout the ceremony. They stand at the aisles of the theater in Hearth's Warming Eve.

They have more active roles in two episodes: One guards the VIP balcony and allows Rarity to enter it at the Wonderbolts race in the episode Sweet and Elite; the color of his magical glow is green.

Guard S2E20

Patrolling unicorn guard in It's About Time.

Unicorn guards appear in It's About Time wearing different uniforms, featuring helmets with flowing crests and redesigned armor. They patrol the Canterlot Archives; one of them, who recognizes Twilight Sparkle, unlocks the restricted "Star Swirl the Bearded" wing for her, even though at first she tries to avoid them and dreads being discovered sneaking about but finds herself eventually cornered.

Many unicorn guards of multiple colors appear in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1 and A Canterlot Wedding - Part 2.

Three unicorn guards, two gray and one brown, appear with speaking roles in Princess Twilight Sparkle - Part 1, and multiple gray unicorn guards appear in Princess Twilight Sparkle - Part 2.

In reference to their appearance in the title sequence, two unicorn guards appear standing between Celestia's throne in the end of Crusaders of the Lost Mark. Unicorn guards appear among Princess Celestia's army in an alternate timeline in The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 1.

In Celestial Advice, two grey unicorn guards observe Celestia pacing across her floor in a flashback.

In A Royal Problem, a grey unicorn guard shows Starlight Glimmer to her royal suite. Later, he calls her for an audience with Princess Luna and almost catches the music box ballerina wishing Starlight luck.

In My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Forgotten Friendship, grey unicorn guards are present when Twilight and Sunset Shimmer come to visit the princesses, both at the door to the throne room and at the foot of Celestia's throne.

In My Little Pony The Movie, a unicorn guard appears near Captain Celaeno and Twilight as they dance during the closing credits.

In School Daze - Part 2, two unicorn guards appear at Celestia and Luna's throne room. In A Rockhoof and a Hard Place, several unicorn guards are shown being drilled by Flash Magnus in Canterlot. In School Raze - Part 2, several unicorn guards are seen marching from Canterlot with Celestia, Luna, and Chancellor Neighsay.

In The Beginning of the End - Part 2, [specify]. In Sparkle's Seven, unicorn guards, both stallion and mare, appear guarding Canterlot Castle from intruders. Rarity also enters the heavily guarded castle by disguising herself in royal guard armor. In Between Dark and Dawn, a unicorn mare appears at the front gate of Canterlot Castle.

In The Summer Sun Setback, a unicorn mare enters Canterlot Castle with her medallion, unwittingly alerting a disguised Queen Chrysalis to the new security feature. A unicorn stallion is later distracted by Cozy Glow and has his magic drained by Tirek, allowing the intruders to enter the Canterlot Archives.

In The Ending of the End - Part 1, a unicorn stallion regards Applejack with suspicion due to rumors spread by the three villains. Multiple unicorn guards later prepare to defend Canterlot from their attack, but are easily defeated by the transformed Cozy Glow.

Twilight thanking royal guards S1E01

The guards dropping off Twilight Sparkle in Ponyville.

In Friendship is Magic, part 1, a pair of the more commonly seen white-coat Pegasus guards chauffeur Twilight Sparkle and Spike from Canterlot to Ponyville in a flying chariot. Their following appearance is in Friendship is Magic, part 2. When Mayor Mare commands three of them to stop Nightmare Moon, the latter strikes them with lightning bolts to swat them away. The guards later draw the royal chariot into town at the end of the episode. They briefly appear in Swarm of the Century, driving Celestia's flying chariot, and in Sonic Rainboom, accompanying Celestia in her spectator box at Cloudsdale's stadium.

They make a speaking appearance in A Bird in the Hoof, where they guard the princess and search for her pet bird Philomena. Two guards stand on duty at the entrance to Sugarcube Corner where Celestia is staying. They are pestered by Rainbow Dash who tries to elicit a response from them, but they remain stoic and silent. Soon after, they hinder Fluttershy's entrance until Twilight confirms she's allowed inside. Later, a guard notifies Celestia that the mayor seeks an audience with her. Even later, two guards are sent to inform Twilight that the Princess's bird is missing, and they continue looking for the bird throughout the episode. The episode ends with the bird tickling the guards and making them laugh at Rainbow Dash's request.

Many Pegasus guards of multiple colors appear in the season two finale.

In Rarity Investigates!, Rarity and Rainbow Dash interrogate Spearhead and two other Pegasus guards over a crime that takes place within Canterlot Castle. One of the guards complains that their job is incredibly boring and thankless work, to the point that they were easily distracted by an offering of cake from the culprit, which allowed the crime to take place.

In Celestial Advice, Pegasus guards are seen flying Twilight and Spike to Ponyville just as in the first episode. Pegasus guards also appear in A Royal Problem pulling Princess Luna's chariot as she smiles and waves to ponies in Canterlot.

In My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Forgotten Friendship, a Pegasus guard is seen flying over Canterlot.

In A Rockhoof and a Hard Place, some Pegasus guards appear being drilled by Flash Magnus in Canterlot. In School Raze - Part 2, Pegasus mares appear among Celestia's guards apprehending Cozy Glow, and later escorting her to Tartarus.

In The Beginning of the End - Part 2, [specify]. In Sparkle's Seven, Pegasus guards, both stallion and mare, appear guarding Canterlot Castle from intruders. Zephyr Breeze also appears as a new member of the royal guard. In Between Dark and Dawn, a Pegasus mare appears at the front gate of Canterlot Castle.

In The Summer Sun Setback, Queen Chrysalis disguises herself as a Pegasus guard as part of her efforts to infiltrate the Canterlot Archives. Real Pegasus guards also stand guard outside Canterlot Castle, and another alerts Twilight to the dangerous weather caused by a misdirected Pegasi weather team.

The Pegasus guards featured in the Hearth's Warming Eve pageant share the same design as Celestia's Pegasus guards, but they have a different color scheme and a lightning bolt emblem instead of a star-shaped emblem.

Zephyr Heights guards[]

Zephyr Heights royal guards in My Little Pony: A New Generation, My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale (season 1), the My Little Pony: Make Your Mark special, My Little Pony: A Maretime Bay Adventure, My Little Pony (2022 comics) Issue #3 page 3, and My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale (season 2) include Zoom Zephyrwing[9] and Thunder Flap. The Pegasi guards are in service to the Zephyr Heights royal family, consisting of Queen Haven and her daughters, princesses Pipp Petals and Zipp Storm. They take Sunny Starscout and Izzy Moonbow into custody after the pair arrive on the Zephyr Heights mountain, and several are in attendance when the pair are brought before the queen. Another pair bring Pipp to Sunny and Izzy's cell, while others are on hand during Pipp's performance at the castle. The royal guards later take Queen Haven into custody after it's revealed that the royal family have been lying to the general populace about having the ability to fly. A squad of them later pursue the queen after she escapes and makes her way to Bridlewood, where they confront a group of unicorns before watching as Sunny and Izzy attempt to restore magic by uniting the Pegasus and unicorn crystals. They also follow the queen and her daughters to Maretime Bay, where they are threatened by Sprout Cloverleaf's assault vehicle. They are thus witness to the restoration of magic, being among the first to regain their magical abilities, and are later seen mingling with the Earth ponies and unicorns in Maretime Bay.

Earth pony guards[]

Earth Guard S3E1

An Earth pony guard holding his helmet.

Two of the royal guards seen overlooking the station in A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1 have no wings or a horn, marking them as Earth pony guards. Another Earth pony guard appears in The Crystal Empire - Part 1, informing Princess Celestia about the return of the Crystal Empire. This marks the first time in the series that a royal guard has removed his helmet, confirming at least for the guard in question that the crest on their helmet matches their mane color.

Earth pony guards appear among Princess Celestia's army in an alternate timeline in The Cutie Re-Mark - Part 1.

Two Crystal Earth pony guards appear in Equestria Games, escorting Spike to meet Princess Cadance when he arrives in the Crystal Empire for the titular sporting event.

More Pegasi guards appear in The Crystalling - Part 1, with Shining Armor selecting two of them to act as honor guards during Flurry Heart's Crystalling ceremony. The Crystal Empire guards play a prominent role in The Times They Are A Changeling, searching for and guarding against the changeling Thorax, whom they believe to be a threat. In the season nine premiere The Beginning of the End, a number of Crystal Pegasus guards are enslaved by King Sombra after failed attempts to stop his takeover of the empire, and later join in his attack on Canterlot. In The Ending of the End, several Crystal Pegasus guards salute Shining Armor and Cadance after receiving word of an imminent attack on Canterlot, and are later seen on guard when Twilight's friends arrive.

My Little Pony (mobile game)[]

One of Luna's guards is referred to as a "cool looking Pegasus" in a post by Gameloft's My Little Pony mini-site[14] and My Little Pony game Facebook page.[15] The game also identifies Blackthorn as captain of the Everfree Royal Guard. During the "Siege of the Crystal Empire" and "The Nightmare Before Hearth's Warming" events, several royal guards appear as enemy minions or bosses. A texture matching Nightmare Moon's white guard has been included in the game's files.[citation needed] The Chaos Roadhouse Sentry also serves as a boss battle helper during the "Nightmare Knights" event.

Protecting a mirror-universe tyrant isn't the flashiest job, but at least the insurance coverage is decent.
Timbucktu Guardspony
If the legends surrounding the fall of Timbucktu are to be believed, there's a chance this guy is Chrysalis in disguise. Be careful!
