"Were you just checking out my junk?"
"Hmm? Why? Why would you say that?"
"The X-ray goggles on your head."
"Maybe I gave it a cursory glance, purely out of scientific curiosity."
―Chase Stein and Gert Yorkes[src]

The X-Ray Specs are a set of X-Ray goggles designed by Victor Stein.

History[]

Creation[]

"Hey, I read about these in Wired."
―Gert Yorkes[src]

The X-Ray Specs were created by Victor Stein. The specs were the subject of an article published in Wired.[1]

Runaways Investigation[]

"We can use these goggles to scour the basement from the outside. No sense in risking our wellbeing."
―Gert Yorkes to Chase Stein[src]

Gert Yorkes picked up the X-Ray Specs in Victor Stein's lab when she and Chase Stein went to the Stein Mansion to investigate after witnessing the sacrifice of Destiny Gonzalez. Yorkes looked at Stein while wearing the specs, prompting Stein to hide his genitals with his hands as he suspected Yorkes to look at this body part. Yorkes and Stein then found the hidden Dematerialization Box and inspected it with the specs, concluding that it was empty.

Yorkes and Stein then headed to the Yorkes Residence to further their investigation as Molly Hernandez had told them that she had heard strange noises coming from the basement. Yorkes and Stein used the X-Ray Specs to inspect the basement from outside without finding anything irregular, prompting them to go into the basement themselves. Stein looked at Yorkes with the goggles, only to find out that she wore an apron which blocked X-rays. He then attempted to see through the heavy sealed door of the basement, but to no avail.

Determined to find out what lied beyond the door, Stein opened it. This caused the release of a creature inside the basement. Using the X-Ray Specs, Stein figured out that it actually was a real dinosaur.[1]

Rescue of Karolina Dean[]

Chase Stein took the X-Ray Specs when he and Molly Hernandez went to the Church of Gibborim Executive Office to rescue Karolina Dean who was being held captive by Jonah. As they were chased by several members of the Church of Gibborim, Stein, Dean and Hernandez hid behind a wall and Stein put the X-Ray Specs on to check whether they could safely leave. Stein saw Jonah through the goggles, who appeared as an incredibly bright and blinding being, forcing Stein to take off the specs.[2]

Infiltration into the Church of Gibborim[]

"What do you see?"
"Not exactly sure."
―Nico Minoru and Chase Stein[src]

Chase Stein took the X-Ray Specs with him when the Runaways infiltrated the Church of Gibborim Executive Office to prevent Jonah from perpetrating another sacrifice. Using the specs, Stein inspected the room in which the Dematerialization Boxes were, along with a tank seemingly containing a human body, appearing to Stein as a full skeleton. Once in the room, Stein realized that the man he had seen was none other than his own father.[3]

New User[]

Alex Wilder took the X-Ray Specs when the Runaways went to rescue Gert Yorkes and Chase Stein from the Yorkes Residence. Wilder was later given full ownership of the goggles by Chase Stein as he chose to leave the Runaways and return home, leaving both the X-Ray Specs and the Fistigons on Wilder's bed.[4]

Victor Stein took another X-Ray Specs with him when PRIDE infiltrated the Olympic Grand Hotel in order to rescue Molly Hernandez from Morgan le Fay. Stein monitored the situation with the goggles.[5]

Capabilities[]

  • X-Ray Vision: Like classical X-ray scanners, the X-Ray Specs are able to see through a variety of materials, ranging from human flesh to stone walls. However, they are some materials which block X-rays, meaning that the X-Ray Specs cannot see through them.
