"First year at the Academy, history course. Right around when the SSR became S.H.I.E.L.D., there was a safe house near here. It was an old speakeasy, and the password to get in was 'swordfish'."
―Phil Coulson[src]

The Krazy Kanoe is a bar located in New York City that started out as a speakeasy run by Ernest Koenig. The place later became a safehouse for S.H.I.E.L.D..

History[]

History[]

"I run a very legitimate illegitimate business."
―Ernest Koenig[src]

Ran by Ernest Koenig during the Prohibition, the establishment that would later be known as The Krazy Kanoe was a speakeasy located underneath a post office. The password to get in was "swordfish." During his business, Koenig saw Freddy Malick living on the streets, so he offered Malick a job. He allowed him to work in his speakeasy as the doorman and live there at a discounted rate.[1]

Simulated Environment[]

"Well, this is a nice venue. Whose idea was this?"
―Jemma Simmons[src]

A year after their victory over Sibyl and Nathaniel Malick, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team comprising of Phil Coulson, Melinda May, Alphonso Mackenzie, Daisy Johnson, Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Yo-Yo Rodriguez met in a simulated environment recreating The Krazy Kanoe to discuss what they had become over the past months. They convened that they should hold this reunion every year.[2]

Tillman threatens Phil Coulson

"You chuckleheads get blood on my floor, you best be prepared to get down and add some of your own."
―Ernest Koenig to Phil Coulson and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]

After S.H.I.E.L.D. traveled through time to an alternate 1931 timeline created by the Chronicoms, they began investigating a case of NYPD officers having been killed with their face missing. S.H.I.E.L.D. got the idea of visiting the speakeasy which would later be known as The Krazy Kanoe thanks to Phil Coulson. Going to the speakeasy with Alphonso Mackenzie, they asked Tillman to speak with the man in charge, named Gemini. However, Tillman and several other people drew their guns and pointed them at the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents instead, accusing them of having killed Jimmy Bottles.

S.H.I.E.L.D. encounters Ernest Koenig

Using his Life-Model Decoy's physiology, Coulson was able to withstand Tillman's show, surprising him and the other attackers long enough for Mackenzie to incapacitate them. As they insisted to meet Gemini, Ernest Koenig appeared and sat down to talk with the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Despite the conversation being quite tense, they subtly warned Koenig about the presence of the Chronicom Hunters. In return, Koenig told them that he would supply alcohol to a party led in honor of Franklin D. Roosevelt, causing S.H.I.E.L.D. to believe that the Chronicoms were after the future President of the United States of America.

Coulson gets Viola to safety

Viola is brought to the speakeasy

Having infiltrated the party, during which it turned out that the Chronicoms were targeting Wilfred Malick, Coulson returned to the speakeasy with Daisy Johnson and a wounded Viola, with Koenig being quite upset by this turn of events.[1] Jemma Simmons and Yo-Yo Rodriguez later came to the speakeasy as well, allowing Simmons to treat Viola's wounds and save her life, while the rest of the team discussed the necessity to save Malick from the Chronicoms, even if it meant enabling the future creation of HYDRA, endangering thousands of lives in the process.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. team then had to hide when the Chronicom Hunters Luke and Abel, still posing as NYPD officers, came looking for Malick. S.H.I.E.L.D. hid in a secret room located near Koenig's office while Koenig assured Luke and Abel that Malick was not with him, but when Viola regained consciousness and caused a bottle to fall and break while struggling to break free, Abel nearly found them. The Chronicom Hunters then left after finding a suspicious car, enabling the agents to get out.

S.H.I.E.L.D. then interrogated Viola, and Simmons found on her shoe a drop of a mysterious compound. Much to Koenig's amazement, she improvised an experiment using the speakeasy's material and products on the bar's counter, and was able to determine that it was a substance used in the Super Soldier Serum that had lead to the creation of the Red Skull. Having thus identified Viola as a HYDRA operative, they interrogated her again and got the location where the delivery of the compound had to be made: Hell's Harbor. The team then left the speakeasy, reluctantly agreeing to take Koenig with them.

Enoch becomes a bartender

Enoch is hired by Ernest Koenig

Later, Enoch, who had been stranded in the year 1931 due to the Zephyr One having jumped through time without him, went to the speakeasy and met with Koenig. He prepared Baracooladas for both of them, and Koenig agreed to hire Enoch, asking him to tell him more about S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Chronicoms.[3]

S.H.I.E.L.D. Safehouse[]
Enoch listens to Tom's story

"I can't believe this old hideout is still running."
"Did you ever stop by, back in the day?"
"Once or twice. Only top brass knew about it. Good place to lay low."
―Daniel Sousa and Phil Coulson[src]

Eventually, with the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the alternate timeline, the former speakeasy, retaining its cover as a bar, became a safehouse for the secret agency. In 1955 Enoch was still present in the bar after being stranded in 1931. While pretending to be a simple bartender listening to customers, he developed a system so that the agents calling the bar could be in contact with those in the Zephyr One.[4]

Rick Stoner and Wilfred Malick at the party

In 1976, the bar hosted a party held by General Rick Stoner to celebrate the beginning of Project Insight, which had been kickstarted forty years before than the original one due to the Chronicoms' interference and the survival of Wilfred Malick. Several agents from the future S.H.I.E.L.D. infiltrated the party in an attempt to gather intelligence about Project Insight. While Melinda May spoke with Stoner, Daisy Johnson and Daniel Sousa notably found the computer equipment used by Malick in the secret room which once belonged to Ernest Koenig, including the list of Insight targets.

The Chronicom Hunters ambush S.H.I.E.L.D.

S.H.I.E.L.D. attempted to leave the bar and regroup, but were stopped by Malick and the Chronicom Hunters he had brought along. With no other choice, Johnson decided to take Malick's son Nathaniel hostage, forcing Malick to let them go, much to Luke's displeasure. The future S.H.I.E.L.D. was therefore able to escape after Johnson took out the Hunters with her powers at the entrance of the bar and Enoch arrived with a getaway car, leaving Nathaniel impressed after seeing Johnson's demonstration of powers.[5]

Nathaniel Malick's Crusade[]
"We received a coded transmission after the attack. Is it fair to assume that everyone here responded to the same coded broadcast?"
"I'm Agent Brandon Gamble. I was stationed at the Hub. Why the hell didn't you just use the door, instead of this crazy teleportation device?"
―Phil Coulson and Brandon Gamble[src]

Nathaniel Malick went to the bar and met with John Garrett, finding him in the middle of a dart games. Malick offered Garrett to join his crew and told him about the future that awaited him with S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA, and although Garrett tended to think of Malick as a lunatic, he agreed to listen to him after Malick demonstrated some of his powers he had taken from Daisy Johnson.[6]

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Leo Fitz is transported inside the safe house

In the aftermath of the destruction of numerous S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities around the globe, a number of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, including Brandon Gamble and Victoria Hand, retreated at the safehouse as it had been spared by the operation, and brought along several 0-8-4s. They were soon joined by the team of agents from the future, and Jemma Simmons was able to connect all the 0-8-4s together. This led to the reveal of a secret room in the bar, in which the device assembled by Simmons was placed, causing the activation of a Quantum Bridge which enabled Leo Fitz to be transported to the bar as well.[7]

What We're Fighting For 3

S.H.I.E.L.D. discuss their plan

Thanks to the explanation provided by Fitz, and because of the necessity to find Kora and to take the Chronicom fleet away from the timeline, it was decided that Deke Shaw would remain in the bar to help activate the Quantum Bridge, while his teammates would return to the Zephyr One to return into their original timeline. Shaw then had the other agents assist him in the preparation of this massive transport, which ended up being a success. Remaining behind in the bar with the agents from various facilities, Shaw took the reins of S.H.I.E.L.D. in this other timeline.[2]
