- "Agent Fury is building up the most complex aerospace defense system in the history of mankind."
- âJames Ritson[src]
The Strategic Aerospace Biophysics and Exolinguistic Response, or S.A.B.E.R., is an aerospace defense system spearheaded by Nick Fury comprised of both humans and alien species such as Skrulls.
History[]
Foundation[]
Before Thanos' invasion of Earth,[1] Nick Fury relocated to a space station far away from Earth to build the most complex aerospace defense system in the history of mankind.[2][3] Reestablishing contact with Talos after the Blip, Fury had Talos and Soren impersonate him and Maria Hill on Earth.[4][5] He also had a Skrull impersonate an FBI agent in order to approach Monica Rambeau and recruit her.[6] Fury was contacted by Talos who informed him about the Mysterio and Spider-Man situation, which prompted him to end his vacation and get back to work.[4]
Gathering Superhero Intel[]
- "Well, ma'am. Your daughter is the hero that saved Jersey City. So, of course we would have intel on someone like her."
- âMonica Rambeau[src]
Following her heroics during the Hunt for Ronin, S.A.B.E.R. began collecting intel on Kate Bishop. Later around 2025, S.A.B.E.R. started gathered intel on Ms. Marvel following her heroic display at the Battle at Coles Academic High School. Around this time, they also began gather information on Stature.[7]
Secret Invasion[]
- "The point of this power is to be uncompromising, to be unsparing, to be able to sit across from a man we greatly admire, with whom we share an entire professional, personal, ancestral history with and to tell him without reservation, that he's fired."
- â"James Rhodes" to Nick Fury[src]
In 2026, after being informed by Hill of the clandestine skrull invasion led by Gravik, Nick Fury used the S.A.B.E.R. Space Elevator to return to Earth to stop Gravik. He did this without authorization however, "James Rhodes" found out about it and tried to contact him or Maria Hill but failed, which essentially meant that Fury went AWOL.[3]
Following the Bombing of Vossoyedineniye Square, "Rhodes" was sent by President James Ritson to meet with Fury and fire him from his position as the director of S.A.B.E.R., which "Rhodes" did.[5] Once Fury stopped Gravik's plan to destroy the human race, he was reinstated as the director of S.A.B.E.R. and returned to the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station alongside his wife, Varra.[8]
Restoration of Hala[]
Investigating Jump Points[]
- "What do you know about the surge in jump point system a few hours ago?"
"I didn't notice anything unusual. I'll take a look now."
"It rattled the whole system. We're trying to get a handle on what happened." - âNick Fury and Carol Danvers[src]
Detecting a surge in the Universal Neural Teleportation Network, S.A.B.E.R. began investigating it. Nick Fury tasked a team of S.A.B.E.R. astronauts led by Monica Rambeau with heading out into space to investigate while S.A.B.E.R.'s neural networking team traced the surge to MB-418. Fury then contacted Captain Marvel and asked her to investigate the planet as a result.
Meanwhile, Rambeau's team were attempting to repair a sensor on the outside of the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station that could get a reading on the nearby jump point, but progress was slow. So Rambeau, at the behest of her teammates, decided to go and investigate the jump point herself. Seeing Rambeau head towards the jump point, Fury overrode Rambeau's communications and questioned her on what she was doing, to which she told Fury that she was gonna get readings for him. As Rambeau travelled closer to the jump point, her comms began to break up. Arriving at the jump point, Rambeau used her superpowers to touch it, causing her to become entangled with Captain Marvel and Kamala Khan.
Khan took the place of Rambeau, who was displaced to MB-418, with Khan hurtling backwards towards the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station. Seeing Nick Fury through the station's window, Khan introduced herself and asked Fury if this was a test for the Avengers, much to Fury's confusion. Rambeau and Khan soon swapped back however, so Rambeau and Fury decided to head down to Earth and investigate.
While riding the S.A.B.E.R. Space Elevator down to Earth, Rambeau swapped with Captain Marvel. Fury questioned Captain Marvel who told him that she touched a Kree-created jump point to which Fury scolded her for doing so. While attempting to show Fury the strange energy the jump point left on her, Captain Marvel swapped places again. Ms. Marvel was soon displaced to the elevator, bringing two Kree soldiers along with her, although she was displaced again soon after. Rambeau was displaced back to the elevator, where she helped Fury finally subdue the Kree soldiers.[7]
Meeting the Khans[]
- "We're looking for Kamala Khan."
- âNick Fury to Yusuf Khan[src]
Arriving on Earth via the S.A.B.E.R. Space Elevator, Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau headed to the Khan's home to speak to the family. They rang the home's doorbell and Yusuf Khan answered it. Rambeau reintroduced herself and apologized for the prior battle that took place in their home. Fury then explained that they were looking for Kamala Khan, much to Kamala's excitement.
Once Yusuf let Fury and Rambeau inside, Rambeau pulled up a S.A.B.E.R.'s file on Kamala Khan on a tablet before Kamala took it from Rambeau and began reading it. Meanwhile, Fury had two Kree soldiers the Khans had tied up arrested. Kamala then asked what S.A.B.E.R. stood for, to which Rambeau told her, which led Fury to scold Rambeau as that was top secret information. Rambeau then informed the Khans that Kamala's entanglement with her and Captain Marvel was likely due to them all having light-based powers.
This led Kamala to try and demonstrate her powers for Rambeau, which caused her to swap places with Captain Marvel. Despite some awkward tension between her and Captain Marvel, Rambeau explained the situation to her. Captain Marvel then attempted to switch with Kamala again but was unable to so she went into the Khan's backyard before flying up into the sky. While she was there, she swapped places with Kamala who was now plummeting to her doom. At the behest of Fury, Rambeau attempted to use her powers to fly up and save Kamala. While Rambeau was able to reach her, she was unable to grab Kamala while she used her powers. In a last second attempt to save both of their lives, Kamala surrounded them in a ball of hard light before Captain Marvel swapped places with them.[7]
Working with the Khans[]
- "They insisted, and your dad is not adjusting very well to space travel"
- âNick Fury to Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan[src]
With Kamala Khan off working as a member of the Marvels trying to stop Dar-Benn, the rest of Khans insisted that they go to the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station alongside Nick Fury, a request that he reluctantly obliged. While Fury and the Khans were riding the S.A.B.E.R. Space Elevator, they received a call from the Marvels. While on the call, Kamala asked if she could continue her space adventure, but her mother, Muneeba Khan, denied her request stating that Fury had told her how dangerous those types of adventures were. At the request of her daughter, Muneeba shifted the phone to display her father, Yusuf Khan, who told Kamala that Fury had taken them to hell. Slightly offended, Fury took the phone from Muneeba and told the Marvels that the Khans had insisted on travelling with him, but Yusuf wasn't adjusting to space travel very well. Fury then caught Kamala's older brother, Aamir Khan, on the phone with his wife and scolded him for the act.
Aboard the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station, the Marvels continued their conversation with Fury and the Khans. Fury informed the team that there was another surge in Universal Neural Teleportation Network, leading Monica Rambeau to conclude that they needed to stick together until they could solve their entanglement. While Muneeba was still hesitant to allow Kamala to risk her life, she was eventually convinced by Fury and the other Marvels to allow Kamala to remain a member of the team, telling Kamala that she loved her before the Marvels ended the call. Fury then further reassured the Khans by telling them they were in good hands with Captain Marvel before Goose puked up some of the Khans dishes. Muneeba remarked that Goose was acting strange and getting a bit fat before Fury attempted to get her attention, but Goose was indignant.
Later, Yusuf Khan spoke with S.A.B.E.R. agent Dag about planning for retirement. Dag told Khan that he hadn't even thought about retirement, to which Khan reassured him stating that it is never too early to starting planning now. Khan then asked Dag how old he was, with Dag telling him that he was 306, which led to Aamir Khan, who was standing besides his father, sarcastically remark that Yusuf and Dag were the same age.
Suddenly the space station's power briefly malfunctions, so Dag, alongside fellow S.A.B.E.R. agent Talia, went to investigate. The pair found a Flerken egg, although they were unaware of what it was, with Talia questioning if they should tell Fury about it. They ultimately decided to inform Fury about the egg and placed it in a glass container so they could study it. As Fury, Dag, and Talia, were studying the egg, thirty more were detected in the space station.[7]
S.A.B.E.R. Space Station Incident[]
- "We only have one evacuation bay online."
"Which means that all we have left to evacuate 350 personnel are 15 escape pods, which seat five, 10 if we squeeze. It's nowhere near enough."
"Well, fill the remaining ones with as many people as you can, then come up with a Plan B." - âDag, Talia, and Nick Fury[src]
Due to a surge of energy from a nearby jump point, an emergency evacuation was triggered on the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station. Sadly for the S.A.B.E.R. crew, this energy surge also knocked most of the escape pods offline. Dag and Talia informed Nick Fury of this fact, so Fury told them to fill as many escape pods as they could and then come up with another plan.
With Dag and Talia dealing with escape pods, Fury headed to the station's central tower alongside the Khans. There, they saw the central core catch on fire, so Fury ran to grab a fire extinguisher. Upon opening the panel the fire extinguisher was hidden behind, Fury found Goose nested alongside a few of the eggs that she had laid, shocking Fury. Yusuf Khan then took the fire extinguisher from Fury's hands and helped Aamir Khan, alongside some S.A.B.E.R. agents, extinguish the flames. Meanwhile, Fury and Muneeba Khan witnessed one of Goose's eggs hatch, with Fury picking up and petting the newly birthed Flerken.
Suddenly, the Flerken kitten unleashed its tentacles and ate a nearby desk that Dag and Talia were sitting at. With only one escape pod left, Dag and Talia believed that they were doomed, but Fury ordered them to get all of the remaining S.A.B.E.R. agents to the evacuation deck immediately. In order to fit all of the remaining personnel in the escape pod, Fury began to have them be eaten by Goose's kittens. The Marvels soon arrived on the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station, and while Ms. Marvel reunited with her family, Fury informed Captain Marvel of his plan.
Despite being ordered to allow the Flerken to eat them, S.A.B.E.R. agents still attempted to run away from them. The efforts were futile however, as all of the remaining members of S.A.B.E.R., excluding Fury and Monica Rambeau, were eaten by the Flerken kittens. Captain Marvel and the Khan family then loaded most of the Flerken kittens into the last escape pod and sent it flying towards Earth. While the Marvels left on Hoopty to stop Dar-Benn from taking the Sun, Fury, the rest of the Khan family, and the remaining Flerkens got aboard a S.A.B.E.R. space ship and headed towards Earth.
Their ship was soon knocked off course by a malfunctioning jump point which sucked the ship in before sending it hurtling towards Earth's surface. Luckily for Fury and his compatriots, their crash landing in New York City left them unharmed. Now on the Earth's surface, the Flerken kittens began puking up the S.A.B.E.R. crew members that they had swallowed. Following the Marvels' defeat of Dar-Benn, Ms. Marvel travelled to the landing site and informed Fury that they had lost Rambeau in their prior battle.[7]
Recovering from Dar-Benn's Damage[]
Following the Restoration of Hala, S.A.B.E.R. returned to the S.A.B.E.R. Space Station and dispatched scientists to Hala to help the Kree repair the planet. Later, Nick Fury checked in with Dag and Talia and asked them how things were going. Dag informed Fury that all of the affected planets were expected to make a full recovery and of the steps S.A.B.E.R. had taken to help Hala. However, Fury made it clear that he was asking how they were dealing with the loss of Monica Rambeau as Dag and Talia mournfully packed up her things.[7]
