"J.A.R.V.I.S., get Igor to steady this thing."
―Tony Stark[src]

The Iron Man Armor: Mark XXXVIII, codenamed Igor, was Tony Stark's thirty-eighth Iron Man suit and was designed to specialize in heavy lifting. It was a part of the Iron Legion and was destroyed during the Clean Slate Protocol.

History[]

Mark38-IM3

The Igor Armor on the Norco

The Igor Armor was made by Tony Stark shortly after the Battle of New York. As part of the Iron Legion, the Igor armor was used during the Battle on the Norco, against Aldrich Killian and his Extremis Soldiers. When the destruction of Piston caused structural instability to a platform among the docks, Stark summoned Igor to stabilize and support the platform. Igor was later destroyed when Stark activated the Clean Slate Protocol.[1]

Capabilities[]

The Igor Armor is much more powerful in terms of brute strength than any of the other Iron Legion Armors, as well as being extremely durable, making it a formidable opponent in battle. However, it was designed specifically for heavy lifting, not combat. The Igor armor contains a variety of mechanisms in its legs and back that can lock into place, allowing it to support structures that have quadruple the mass of the suit on its back for an extended period of time without failing.[1]

Trivia[]

  • This armor resembles the Hulkbuster armor from the comics, and as its concept art had the traditional red and yellow color scheme, it was assumed to be it until Avengers: Age of Ultron was released and confirmed it was another armor.
  • In the book Iron Man 3: Suits of Armor, Igor is depicted with the red and gold color scheme like its comic counterpart.
  • The Clean Slate Protocol was designed to self-destruct all remaining armor suits after the battle; however, as the platform Igor was holding was shrouded by smoke and dust at the end of the battle, it was unsure if Igor was destroyed in combat or destroyed by the Protocol.
  • The armor's name "Igor" is a reference to Dr. Viktor Frankenstein's assistant Igor, who possesses a similar hunchback.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • According to Marvel Studios Visual Development Supervisor Ryan Meinerding: "Shane Black had the idea early on to have a hunchbacked suit, and the design lent itself to be a heavy-lifting cargo suit that carried loads on his back. While Igor is not built for Hulkbusting, he is evidence that Tony Stark is thinking about building larger and more powerful suits."[2]
