The Ambush at Buccaneer Bay was an attempt by Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes and Helmut Zemo, assisted by Sharon Carter, to find Wilfred Nagel who was the source of the Super Soldier Serum.

Background[]

In an attempt to find the source of the Super Soldier Serum that was used by the Flag Smashers, Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes reluctantly decided to join forces with Helmut Zemo who had the information about HYDRA's secret operations. As Barnes liberated Zemo from the Berlin Correctional Facility, Zemo agreed to help them, believing that enhanced individuals like super soldiers should not be allowed to roam free. Zemo brought Wilson and Barnes to Madripoor to speak with Selby to gather information about the serum's source.

Zemo tricked Selby by promising her a control over the Winter Soldier, and she revealed that the serum was created by Wilfred Nagel, who worked for the Power Broker. However, their cover was blown when Wilson received a call from his sister, and Selby ordered her men to take them out. Suddenly, Selby was killed by a sniper shot, and Wilson, Barnes and Zemo were blamed for the murder, as ₿1,000 bounties were placed on their heads. Fighting the bounty hunters, Wilson, Barnes and Zemo were approached by Sharon Carter who saved them, explaining how she fled the United States of America when she was deemed a traitor for helping Steve Rogers. Wilson promised to help her with getting a pardon from the government and Carter agreed to help them to find Nagel.^[3]

Ambush[]

Using her contacts in Madripoor underworld, Sharon Carter found out that Wilfred Nagel had a laboratory hidden in Buccaneer Bay. She found a container hiding the the entrance and while she stayed on the watch, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes and Helmut Zemo went to confront Nagel. Wilson approached Nagel, saying that they knew that he created the Super Soldier Serum and although Nagel was unresponsive, he changed his mind as he saw Barnes and Zemo there. Nagel suggested offering him a counter proposal and paying him for the information, before Barnes was informed by Carter that the bounty hunters found them.

While Carter fought the bounty hunters, Barnes threatened Nagel and forced him to reveal that he used to work for HYDRA on the Winter Soldier Program in order to correct the failures of the Winter Soldiers. When HYDRA fell, Nagel was recruited by the CIA to continue his research, using blood samples taken from Isaiah Bradley, however, he fell a victim to the Snap, before he could finish the serum. Eventually, Nagel was brought back by the Blip and since CIA abandoned the program, he was recruited by the Power Broker who provided Nagel with resources to finish the serum, but it was stolen by Karli Morgenthau. Nagel told Wilson and Barnes that he did not know where Morgentau was, but she recently contacted him, asking for the help for Donya Madani.

With the bounty hunters closing in on them, Carter went to the lab, telling Wilson and Barnes that they need to go, before Zemo suddenly killed Nagel. Before they could process it, one of the bounty hunters fired a rocket launcher, destroying the lab with all of Nagel's research, forcing Wilson, Barnes, Zemo and Carter to escape. They engaged in a gunfight with the hunters, and although they were closing in, Zemo shot at a pipe and caused an explosion, which allowed Wilson, Barnes and Carter to safely retreat. Although Wilson wanted Zemo to be back in jail, they still needed his help to find the Flag Smashers, so they left Madripoor, while Carter stayed there.^[3]

Aftermath[]

As Donya Madani was their only lead to Karli Morgenthau, Sam Wilson contacted Joaquín Torres and asked him to find her, and Torres informed him that Madani was in Riga, Latvia, where she died from illness. Baron Zemo brought them to Riga to hunt Morgenthau down, but Bucky Barnes was suddenly approached by Ayo who informed him that the Dora Milaje wanted Zemo.^[3] Barnes convinced Ayo that Zemo was needed to stop the Flag Smashers, but she gave Barnes only eight hours before the Dora Milaje would come for Zemo. The group tried tried to gather information at the Latvian GRC Resettlement Camp and while Wilson and Barnes had no luck speaking with the locals, Zemo found out about Madani's funeral but kept the information for himself as a leverage.

They were then confronted by John Walker and Lemar Hoskins, who wanted to capture Morgenthau themselves and did not approve of Barnes liberating Zemo, but all five of them then went to the funeral at the resettlement camp. Wilson convinced Walker to give him a chance to talk with Morgenthau alone, however, Walker had no patience and went forward, forcing Morgenthau to escape. Although Barnes and Hoskins chased after her, Morgenthau was attacked by Zemo who destroyed the vials of the Super Soldier Serum, before being incapacitated by Walker, while Morgenthau escaped. With the Flag Smashers gone, Walker found one remaining vial of the serum and decided to take it for himself without telling anyone.^[4]
