Ba-boom. Name's Hades, Lord of the Dead. Hi, how ya doin'?
~ Hades' famous catchphrase.

Hades is the main antagonist of Disney's Hercules franchise, serving as the main antagonist of Disney's 35th full-length animated feature film Hercules and Hercules: The Animated Series.

He is the hegemonic ruler of the Underworld, Pain and Panic's leader and boss, Hercules' paternal uncle and arch-nemesis, and Zeus and Poseidon's younger brother.

In all of his appearances, he was voiced by James Woods.

His Evil Ranking[]

Debated Validations[]

  • He appears to have a crush on Aphrodite, but it's never made clear if it is out of love or lust.
  • It is implied he used Lethe water to help get away with his crimes which explains why he isn't severely punished in several episodes of the prequel series.

What Make Him Heinous?[]

  • He plans to overthrow his brother Zeus to rule the cosmos and become the new god of Olympus by freeing the Titans, despite Zeus allowing Hades to be the god of the underworld, the place where souls go after they die.
  • Upon learning that his nephew Hercules will stop him if he appears just at the moment as he is about to take over the cosmos, he orders his two henchmen, Pain and Panic, to use a potion against the baby Hercules that will take away his immortality and thus be able to kill him.
  • In the animated series Hercules, which takes place years before the events of the film, he would make his first attempts to overthrow his brother from power.
    • Tricked the gods into swimming in the Lethe River, which erases their memories.
    • Turning Zeus into a mortal and then feeding him to Cerberus.
    • Joins forces with Jafar on one occasion to achieve his goals.
    • Used Medusa, a female Gorgon and takes advantage of her insecure and help her with his schemes.
    • Almost getting Zeus to kill Hercules once when he freed Prometheus and manipulated the Caucasian Eagle to help him.
    • Stole the sun which caused chaos and to diminish the other god's respect for Zeus and attempt to win a re-vote.
    • Tried to recruit Cassandra to be one of his minions.
    • Tricked Poseidon to move the River Styx (the edge of Hades' domain) to include Greece. All the heroes are punished by Hades with what they hate most - for Helen of Troy is was being force fed Feta Puffs, for Adonis it was a role reversal with him and a servant who is meant to serve the former's eternal punishment, for Cassandra it was Home Grekonomics, for Icarus it was Gym until he beat the stuffing out of a dummy that looked like Hercules and for Hercules himself, Shop Class.
    • Sends Pain and Panic to dispose of the doctor Hippocrates.
    • Once rewrote reality with the Tapestry of Fate with making Phil a janitor, Zeus as ruler of the underworld, and Hercules himself a god and Hades' son.
    • Once asked Ares to start a war since he is tired of no new souls coming into the Underworld. When Hades found out that the war was canceled he visits Echidna and has her gather her entire family to attack Athens and Spartans.
    • Gave his minions to Croesus so they can torture Cassandra and left him to die when Athlanis City was sinking.
    • Allows the creation of Catastrophia, a disease that Hades ordered Pain and Panic to spread and put the cure in the land of Briares, the Hundred Handed One.
    • Cheated in a bet with Zeus to prevent Hercules from getting his driver license so he can control the Elysian Fields.
    • Once tried to use the Kronos Stone to make all the Gods go to sleep.
    • Sent Pain and Panic to find a thief who stole Lethe water from him to keep his reputation intact.
  • He is very abusive to his henchmen and constantly mistreats them for the smallest inconvenience.
  • He has the soul of Megara enslaved after she sold her soul to Hades to save her boyfriend, only to keep it after he later cheats on her and forces her to commit several of his orders, even increasing her sentence for her failures.
  • Upon learning that Hercules is still alive after Pain and Panic failed their goal, Hades devises a plan to trick Hercules into unknowingly releasing Hydra from his lair, who nearly killed Hercules.
    • He is even shown the monster addressing the onlookers who had come to watch the battle, proving that the monster would have killed them if Hercules had not interfered.
  • He puts Hercules to fight against different monsters in desperate attempts to kill him, all being useless.
  • Upon discovering that Hercules was in love with Megara, Hades manipulates Hercules into temporarily abandoning his powers during and thus freeing Megara, lest Hercules interfere with his goal.
    • He also tells Hercules that Megara was working with him the entire time, which demoralizes Hercules and almost breaks the love relationship with Megara.
  • Upon finally breaking free from Hercules, Hades finally performs his most heinous action by freeing the Titans Zeus had caged for eons to cause massive destruction and thus aid him in his final plan to overthrow his brother from the throne.
    • One of them is shown crushing an entire village with one of his feet and then the Titans are shown causing massive destruction throughout Athena, which definitely must have killed hundreds, maybe even thousands, of innocent people all over the place.
  • While he accepted Hercules' deal to rescue Megara in the River Styx, this was to see Hercules die while he was trying to save Megara, as it is practically impossible to save a person's soul while he is in the river.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • The main reason he cannot be Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil is that he is too comedic and is constantly played for laughs.
  • He has a bit of honor (despite being a death god), as he freed Megara from her bondage when she asked Hercules to hand over his super strength and then gave Hercules back his super strength after Megara was accidentally harmed, something that did not benefit Hades at all and he still did.
    • He also showed some honor in the TV series.
    • In the TV Series, it was implied that he care for his father Kronos.
  • While this doesn't make him tragic at all, he does have a legitimate reason to be angry at both his brother Zeus and the other gods, as he is apparently the only god who does his job almost all the time, while the other gods and Zeus are shown as not working and mostly lounging around, making Hades' motivations completely understandable, especially considering he was subjected to undeserved abuse from Zeus when he left Olympus.

Trivia[]

  • Hades is considered to be one of the most popular Disney villains, mainly due to James Woods' voice performance of him. Originally, Hades was supposed to be less comedic and more serious, possibly being Near Pure Evil or Pure Evil. However, when Woods auditioned for the role, the character was rewritten to fit more with the actor's portrayal of him.
  • He may or may not be Inconsistently Heinous in the upcoming Disney+ live-action Hercules remake, especially considering that the Russo Brothers have stated that there may be a possibility that the film will not be a musical like the original if it did this could give Him a possibility of him qualifying as Near Pure evil or even Pure Evil.
  • He and Ursula are the only two main villains in the Disney Renaissance neither to be Pure Evil nor Villainous Benchmarks.
  • He and Captain Hook are the only two Inconsistently Heinous villains to be part of the Council of Disney Villains.
