Bring me my daughter, and I'll show the both of you.
~ Calvin telling Raina to bring his daughter back.
I'm a man trying to put my family back together!
~ Cal lashing out at Raina.

Doctor Calvin "Cal" L. Johnson, also known as Calvin Zabo, is a major character in the TV series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., appearing as the overarching antagonist in Season 1, the central antagonist-turned-anti-hero in Season 2 and a mentioned character in the subsequent seasons.

He is the ex-husband of the Inhuman Jiaying and the father of Daisy "Skye" Johnson who wants to reunite his family and kill anyone he believes is trying to ruin that, including S.H.I.E.L.D. director Phil Coulson. He also wants revenge on HYDRA leader Daniel Whitehall, who dissected Jiaying and drove her to insanity.

He was portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • After his wife was revived and found that HYDRA took Daisy away from them, he massacred everyone brutally, including the HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in the village. He would then massacre multiple more villages so his wife Jiaying could take their life force. While this was off-screen one of his victims Linda Avery gave her colleague Richard Lumley PTSD after her death, therefore, it has an on-screen effect due to this.
  • After Phil Coulson kills Whitehall due to not getting his revenge he attempts to kill Phil beating him up out of rage before nearly killing him by crushing Coulson's skull only stopping because Skye tells him to back off. This also make him an ingrate since Whitehall would’ve shot him if it weren’t for Coulson saving Cal.
  • After the incident, he forms a team called the Slicing Talons to destroy Phil Coulson and his team out of revenge by freeing four people from their punishment from S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • He tricks the guard and then lets Gideon kill him to break into the Brynmore Psychiatric Facility and recruit more individuals in his group.
  • He then attempts to kill Phil's team in the field before being teleported away by Gordon.
  • After being revived by Jemma Simmons from a heart attack, he attempts to kill all the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents despite the fact they helped him.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has a very tragic backstory. He was once a normal doctor and a loving family man towards his wife until Whitehall kidnapped her to vivisect her before tossing her corpse in the woods leading to him going crazy. When he stitched her back up Jiaying left him because she became horrified by their desperate actions while looking for Skye. He then spent decades looking for Skye, as he promised Jiaying that he would find her thus making him rather understandable.
  • He is affable as he speaks in a polite tone despite being mostly hostile to others, especially toward the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
  • He loves his family, especially his wife Jiaying. He end's up crying on Jiaying's corpse when he found her body before stitching her up and then decides to massacre many villages just so his wife could drain their life force and cried when he killed her in order to stop her plan while also saving his daughter's life. He also loves his daughter Daisy as his entire goal was to search for her in order to reunite with her after many years. He even admits to Daisy that he planned on giving his family a normal and peaceful life after it's over.
  • He does show standards such as being disgusted by Whitehall's calling him a butcher after what he did to his wife.
  • When Antoine Triplett was shot during a firefight, he volunteered to assist in saving his life.
  • He ultimately redeems himself when he decides to join S.H.I.E.L.D. , and stops Jiaying's plan before having his memory erased and starting a new life as a veterinarian named Doctor Winslow.
