Miles "Tails" Prower is the deuteragonist of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
He is Sonic's best friend and sidekick, whose IQ rivals that of the evil genius Dr. Eggman. Tails is especially good at inventing and spends a lot of his time creating machines to aid Sonic in their adventures.
Tails is very close to Sonic and sees him as an older brother figure. In many ways, Sonic reciprocates those feelings, but doesn't always show it, which can cause irritation or sadness on Tails' part. In general, though, the two get along well; when arguments or disagreements do break out, they are always resolved due to their strong bond.
Portrayals[]
Much like Sonic, Tails has had numerous voice actors/actresses throughout the media he appeared in. He is voiced by Ryō Hirohashi in the Japanese version of the games. From Sonic Adventure to Sonic Shuffle, he was voiced by Corey Bringas. Corey was later replaced by his younger brother, Connor, in Sonic Adventure 2. From Sonic Heroes to Sonic Advance 3, Tails was voiced by William Corkery. Tails was voiced by Amy Palant in the English dub of Sonic X, who proceeded to voice the character in the games from Shadow the Hedgehog until Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing. He was next voiced by Kate Higgins from Sonic Free Riders (where she also voiced Wave the Swallow) until Sonic Lost World and briefly reprised her role in Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps, who also voiced Pauline in the Super Mario franchise, Sakura Haruno in the Naruto franchise, C.C. in the Code Geass franchise, and currently Princess Aurora in Disney media. Tails is currently and primarily voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who also voices Charmy Bee in the same series.
Biography[]
Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]
Tails is one of the two playable characters in Sonic 2, with the other being Sonic himself. He can be played either as Sonic's sidekick or alone.
As the player[]
If the player chooses the option "Tails Alone" in the options menu, Tails is the main protagonist of the game. To stop Dr. Robotnik, Tails goes across West Side Island, collecting rings and destroying badniks. He also claims the seven Chaos Emeralds.
In the zones Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Aquatic Ruin, Casino Night, Hill Top, Mystic Cave, Oil Ocean and Metropolis, Tails fights against Dr. Robotnik, defeating him every time. After Robotnik is defeated, Tails releases the animals from the capsule and finishes the zone. If Tails dies, he loses a life; If he loses the last life, it is game over.
Later, in Sky Chase Zone, Tails chases Wing Fortress as he is standing on a plane named "Tornado", while a hedgehog named Sonic drives it. When they go to Wing Fortress, Sonic and the Tornado are shot down and fall from the sky, and Tails jumps from it and goes through the zone. He later confronts Dr. Robotnik in Wing Fortress and defeats him and then he jumps on the Tornado. Sonic helps Tails to get to Robotnik in his rocket ship. In Death Egg, Tails defeats Silver Sonic, and later he defeats Death Egg Boss and runs away as Death Egg explodes.
Tails falls from the sky, but is saved by Sonic, who drives the Tornado. Thanks to Tails, West Side Island is safe.
As Sonic's Sidekick[]
If the player chooses the option "Sonic and Tails" in the options menu, Tails is the sidekick of Sonic. He can be played by the second player. Tails follows Sonic as the two go through West Side Island. If Tails dies, he will fly back to Sonic (he can't fly by himself; only when he respawns and if Sonic dies), but he can't dive underwater while flying (if Sonic dies underwater or drowns, Tails will fly up to the surface).
Traveling across West Side Island, the duo claimed the Chaos Emeralds. Along the way, Tails proved a great assist to Sonic and the two build a strong bond.
After freeing West Side Island, Tails and Sonic followed the doctor to the Wing Fortress Zone in the Tornado, but when they got there, Tails and the Tornado were shot down. However, Tails returned in time with a rocket engine-enhanced Tornado to help Sonic get to Dr. Robotnik in his rocket ship.
Back on the ground, Tails watched the Death Egg explode thanks to Sonic, and took the Tornado back into the sky to look for Sonic. There, he saved Sonic from his fall from space and the two of them flew through the sky together. At the end of their adventure, Tails and Sonic had become best friends, and Tails was made his idol's sidekick.
As NPC[]
If the player chooses the option "Sonic Alone" in the options menu, Tails first appears in Sky Chase Zone, where he drives the Tornado while Sonic, the player, stands on it. In Wing Fortress Zone, Tails and the Tornado are shot down, and Sonic jumps from it. However, Tails returned in time with a rocket engine-enhanced Tornado to help Sonic get to Robotnik in his rocket ship.
Later, in the ending, Tails watches the Death Egg explode thanks to Sonic, and saves him in his Tornado.
In Sky Chase, Wing Fortress and the ending, the gameplay of "Sonic and Tails" and "Sonic Alone" is pretty much the same; this can be seen easily because when Sonic and Tails complete Metropolis Zone in the gameplay of "Sonic and Tails", Tails becomes an NPC for the rest of the game.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles \ Sonic 3 Complete[]
Tails is one of the playable characters in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the other two being Sonic and Knuckles. He can be played either as Sonic's sidekick or alone. In Sonic 3, he is one of the two playable characters, the other one being Sonic, and in Sonic & Knuckles, he is an NPC. Tails gained the ability of flight, which means that now he can fly by himself.
As the player[]
If the player chooses the option "Tails Alone" in the data select, Tails is the main protagonist of the game. He flies to Angel Island, only to be knocked out by an echidna named Knuckles, who steals his Chaos Emeralds. Tails goes through Angel Island, collecting rings, destroying badniks and reclaiming his stolen Chaos Emeralds.
After encountering Knuckles several times, and after he fights Big Arm in Launch Base and stop the Death Egg from launching, Tails confronts Knuckles in Hidden Palace, only to find out that Dr. Eggman stole the Master Emeralds. Tails then follows Knuckles into Sky Sanctuary, and after he defeats Mecha Sonic, he goes to Death Egg, defeats Dr. Robotnik and destroy the Death Egg once and for all. After this, Tails falls from the space with the Master Emerald, and Sonic catches him in the Tornado, and Tails bring back the Master Emerald back to Knuckles.
Note that in Sonic 3 Complete, in the end of Carnival Night, the cannon can launch Tails either to Flying Battery or Ice Cap. If the player chose to play in the original zone order, Tails will be launched to Flying Battery, while if the player chose to play in the released order, Tails will be launched to Ice Cap. Also, in the end of Mushroom Hill (Mushroom Valley), if the player chose to play in the original zone order, Tails will be sent to Sandopolis while if the player chose to play in the released order, Tails will go to Flying Battery.
As Sonic's Sidekick[]
If the player chooses the option "Sonic and Tails" in the data select, Tails is the sidekick of Sonic. He can be played by the second player. Tails and Sonic go to Angel Island. While Tails drives the Tornado, Sonic jumps from the plane and transforms into Super Sonic, only to be knocked out by Knuckles. Tails flies to Sonic and the duo reclaim back their Chaos Emeralds. After encountering Knuckles several times, and after they fight Big Arm in Launch Base and stop the Death Egg from launching, Sonic and Tails confront Knuckles in Hidden Palace, only to find out that Dr. Eggman stole the Master Emerald. Sonic and Tails then follows Knuckles into Sky Sanctuary, and after they defeat Mecha Sonic, they go to Death Egg, defeats Dr. Robotnik and destroy the Death Egg once and for all. After this, Tails leaves Sonic (The Doomsday Zone is the only level where Tails does not appear), and after Sonic completes the Doomsday Zone, he catches him in his Tornado, and they bring back the Master Emerald back to Knuckles.
As NPC[]
If the player chooses the option "Sonic Alone" in the data select, Tails first appears in the intro (which is also the intro of "Sonic and Tails" gameplay"), driving the Tornado while Sonic jumps from it and transforms into Super Sonic. Unlike in "Sonic and Tails" gameplay, Tails does not appear after the intro. He makes another appearance in Marble Garden Boss, where he helps Sonic to fight Dr. Robotnik. During the fight, he can be controlled by the second player. After this, he makes another appearance in the beginning of Carnival Night, flying Sonic to there, but leaves shortly after Sonic lands on the ground. In Sonic 3 Complete only, he makes another appearance in Launch Base, flying to Sonic after he had defeated Big Arm and stopped Death Egg from launching. He also makes another appearance in the beginning of Mushroom Hill (Mushroom Valley), flying Sonic to there, but like in Carnival Night, he leaves shortly after Sonic lands on the ground.
After Tails left Sonic in Mushroom Hill (Mushroom Valley), he is not seen again for the rest of the game and makes his next and last appearance in the credits, after Sonic destroyed Death Egg once and for all and defeated Dr. Robotnik in the Doomsday Zone. When Sonic falls from the space with the Master Emerald, Tails catches him in his Tornado, and Sonic brings back the Master Emerald back to Knuckles.
Note that in Sonic 3 Complete, unlike in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Tails does not get stuck jumping on the ground after Sonic jumps from him and he flies to the ground in the beginning of Carnival Night and Mushroom Hill (Mushroom Valley). Instead, he will jump only once, and then he will fly and disappear. The same thing is true for Sonic 3 Complete's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gameplay in Carnival Night.
Sonic Mania \ Sonic Mania Plus[]
Tails is one of the three (five in Sonic Mania Plus) playable characters in Sonic Mania, the other two being Sonic and Knuckles (Sonic, Knuckles, Mighty and Ray in Sonic Mania Plus). He can be played either as Sonic's sidekick or alone, but this time, he can also have Knuckles as his sidekick when activating the feature "& Knuckles" (which has Knuckles as the player's sidekick) while playing as him.
As Player[]
In the Mania Mode, if the player chooses the option "Tails Alone" in the data select, Tails is the main protagonist of the game. He arrives with Sonic at Angel Island and jumps off the tornado before being sent to Green Hill. He goes through the twelve zones of the game, collecting rings, destroying badniks and collecting Chaos Emeralds. In Mirage Saloon Act 1, he chases Dr. Eggman while riding the tornado, piloted by Sonic, while Knuckles is knocked off the tornado by a robot called "The Heavy Magician", which is one of the five robots known as "The Hard-Boiled Heavies". The tornado is shot down at the end of the act, sending Tails and the tornado to the ground, though Tails manages to jump off. After defeating Eggman in the end of Titanic Monarch Act 2, he escaped the Titanic Monarch along with Knuckles as Sonic goes to fight Dr. Eggman in the Egg Reverie (though Sonic will join them if he did not collect the Chaos Emeralds).
In the Encore Mode, Tails can be unlocked after Sonic had arrived in Green Hill. He can be played as the primary character or as the player's sidekick, but if he is not one of the main two players, he will only appear as an orange icon with the letter "T" on it. After defeating the boss in Titanic Monarch Act 2, and if the player had collected all 7 Chaos Emeralds, he appears in his super form along with Super Sonic, Super Knuckles, Super Might and Super Ray as they knock Eggman into a rift. After the credits, the 5 heroes arrive at an ice cream parlor, only to be surprised with a sundae by the Heavy King.
As Sonic's Sidekick[]
If the player chooses the option "Sonic & Tails" in the data select, Tails is the sidekick of Sonic. He is first seen flying the Tornado while arriving at Angel Island, appearing again as he and Sonic are sent to Green Hill. He drives the Tornado in Mirage Saloon, but is shot down at the end of the first act, though both he and Sonic jump off and land safely on the ground. After defeating the final boss in Titanic Monarch Act 2, if Sonic had collected all Chaos Emeralds, Tails escapes along with Knuckles and is seen again in the cutscene after Sonic had defeated Dr. Eggman and a robot named "The Heavy King" in the Egg Reverie, but if Sonic did not collect all emeralds, Sonic and Tails will instead escape along with Knuckles.
As NPC[]
If the player chooses the option "Sonic Alone" in the data select, Tails is first seen driving the tornado, but unlike the "Sonic & Tails" gameplay, he does not appear after Sonic jumps off the tornado. He is seen again in Mirage Saloon Act 1, driving the tornado while Sonic stands on it. After being shot down, Tails is not seen again for the rest of the game, as his next and final appearance is in the ending cutscene.
Personality[]
Tails is a gentle, sweet-natured and loyal fox cub with a positive attitude and a giant heart. In the beginning, he was fearful and cowardly, but he gained independence and became more stubborn over the years. Tails is not the selfish type and, instead, he is a pretty innocent and selfless boy, and is always ready and willing to help others without asking for anything in return.
Despite being only 8 years-old, Tails is very intelligent for his age (being declared to be the most intelligent character in the Sonic series) and loves studying, especially when it involves science and mechanics, for which Tails holds a great love for. He finds himself most at home in his workshop working in his next creation (which usually serves to help his friends out, like Sonic).
Despite his great skills, Tails is very humble about his abilities, never giving them many thoughts, though he has yet to discover his true potential of what he can accomplish. At the time of Sonic Lost World, Tails has become more confident and even playful about his intelligence, though he still does not openly brag.
Tails is often optimistic, but he is also sensitive, becomes quite nervous and fearful, which makes him unable to adequately cope or do anything about the situation at hand. However, even in the worst of situations, he doesn't give up and shows a strong will to survive. Much like Dr. Eggman, Tails has an affinity for customizing his personal belongings to his likeness, with his home in Emerald Town resembling his head and the Miles Electric named after him.
History[]
Tails in the early years was harassed and bullied because of his two tails, which in the beginning he had to learn to control. However, he succeeded thanks to his friends. Tails is also Sonic's longtime best friend, with whom he travels the world and battles the tyranny of Dr. Eggman. According to Amy, Tails was basically raised by Sonic. In the past, Sonic and Tails would have visited Angel Island. During their journey around the island, they have gained some familiarity with its various regions.
A while ago, Tails participated in a situation involving the space colony ARK, in which Dr. Eggman used his Eclipse cannon to blow up part of the moon to show the world the power he wielded. These events allowed Tails to team up with Sonic, Knuckles, Rouge, Shadow, and even Dr. Eggman himself to stop a surprise for the world.
He then teamed up with Sonic and Knuckels, and soon after that there was a battle between Team Heroes and Neo Metal Sonic - the enhanced form of Metal Sonic - who was impersonating Dr. Eggman. This time, the fake Dr. Eggman was piloting the Egg Emperor mech, but Tails and his friends defeated the mech. However, after learning that Neo Metal Sonic had taken control of the Eggman Empire, Tails and his team defeated the robot and brought it back to normal.
Later, Tails reprogrammed Gemerl, thus transforming the robot from Dr. Eggman's lackey into a reformed robot who came to live with Cream's family.
Abilities[]
Gifted with a pair of twin tails, Tails can utilize these unique appendages to achieve flight by twirling them around like rotary blades, similar to a helicopter. While in flight, Tails can maneuver efficiently and with great agility in order to avoid threats. He can even use them as an extra pair of limbs to catch and throw objects. He is also very agile and can keep up with Sonic at quite high speeds.
Tails also has a genius-level intellect which has allowed him to invent, construct, and operate many machines and devices for helping him and his friends on their adventures. Notably, despite the notorious weirdness of Dr. Eggman's technology, Tails is able to hack into Dr. Eggman's systems and tinker with his machines, though he sometimes needs extra help. In addition, Tails can do a number of advanced calculations in his head in a matter of seconds, and can do so even in the heat of battle in order to analyze a situation and deduce the most efficient way to attack an opponent. He is also a capable pilot, particularly when it comes to the Tornado plane, and his skills as a pilot exceeds even Sonic's. Tails also uses his skills to modify and improve vehicles.
Relationships[]
Sonic the Hedgehog[]
Sonic is Tails' idol and mentor, as well as his best friend and older brother-like figure. Tails always admired Sonic for his heroism and bravery, and had the dream of become a superhero like Sonic. Tails first met his idol personally in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where Sonic's plane Tornado crushed on West Side Island. Tails started to follow Sonic, much to his disgust as Sonic initially got a little annoyed by Tails' childish behavior and naivety. However, Sonic quickly got impressed by Tails' ability to fly using his twin-tails, and let him tag along. When Dr. Eggman attacked West Side Island, Sonic joined Tails when the fox cub followed him into the conflict. In time, Tails proved himself a great ally to Sonic, and after defeating Dr. Eggman, the two had built the function for the friendship that would define their future. Eventually, Tails' dream became true, and Sonic became Tails' mentor. Along with being Tails' idol and mentor, Sonic in time became the fox's best friend and also an older brother figure to him. Additionally, Sonic would stop bullies from teasing Tails for his twin-tails, which only improved Tails' admiration of him.
Since meeting each other, Tails and Sonic have been inseparable, with their friendship having grown up to the point where they have a brother-like relationship. In Sonic Advance 3, they are even noted to have an "Unbreakable Bond", and when Tails was once mind-controlled into fighting Sonic, Sonic never laid a finger on him in refusal to hurt his friend. Sonic himself sees Tails as a cute "adopted" kid brother and looks him accordingly. Nevertheless, he respects and trusts Tails immensely and treats him as his equal partner in adventures. Whenever on an adventure, Sonic always asks Tails to come along and will accept his help at any time. That said, however, Sonic will ignore Tails when he gives advice or information, often when it is most useful, though he is big enough to admit he should had listened to him.
Sonic cares very much for Tails' well-being. He will not hesitate to threaten those who endanger him and will always make his safety his top priority, regardless of the matters on hand, like when he sent Tails away against his will in Sonic Colors when the Nega-Wisp Armor attacked them. When Tails finds himself in doubt, Sonic is always there to give him moral support. Throughout their adventures, the two have proven themselves a perfect team who can handle nearly anything; both provide strengths to the other's weakness (Sonic handles the muscle while Tails handles the smarts) and neither of them would get far without the other's aid. Tails has in particular proven himself Sonic's most reliable ally, always providing him with valuable help, knowledge, and machines. In turn, Sonic is impressed with Tails' work and considers his technical skills unparalleled, though this faith makes him leave all the tech work to him.
Sonic usually holds absolute faith in Tails' skills, although this faith has been known to waver. When Sonic planned for Dr. Eggman to do the tech work to save the world from the Deadly Six's abuse of the Extractor, his own frustrations over having caused the mess made him doubt Tails' skills. This would strain their friendship over time. At the end though, Sonic apologized for doubting Tails, mending their inseparable friendship.
Amy Rose[]
Tails and Amy are really close friends, due to Tails being Sonic's best friend am because of Amy's lovely obsession for Sonic, she considers Tails a friend of her as well. Having no significant issues about him, Amy keeps a good relationship with Tails despite seeing him as naïve and timid. They are overall loyal friends, whose eagerness complement each other, and each of them will come to the other's rescue without hesitation whenever one of them are in trouble. While Amy respects Tails however, she also tends to view him as the child among her friends, thinking he is cute and adorable rather than tough. As such, she can get emotional when she sees Tails prove his growing maturity.
Both Tails and Amy are usually together when they and Sonic are out saving the world, although Sonic uses Tails to distract Amy in order to escape from her or avoid contact during a mission. Tails usually responses to this with a lack of confidence as he too is afraid of her anger; Tails will become nervous or run away whenever he thinks he has provoked Amy to the point of her losing her temper.
Amy also at times will come to Tails' aid and defend him, like when Wave the Swallow insulted Tails, where Amy for infuriated whilst, challenging Wave to a race. Tails has also saved Amy several times when Sonic could not, to which she is very grateful. In Sonic Adventure, when the Egg Carrier was losing altitude and about to crash, Sonic told Tails to act quickly and take Amy to safety. Tails also saved Amy a few more times from Dr. Eggman in the sequel, saving Amy along with Sonic from the exploding Prison Island, and also rescuing Amy when Dr. Eggman had her at gunpoint on the Space Colony ARK.
Knuckles the Echidna[]
Knuckles is Tails' best friend after Sonic. Due to Knuckles' rivalry with Sonic, Knuckles is much closer to Tails than he is to Sonic, which technically makes Tails as Knuckles' closest friend. Unlike Sonic, Tails does not have any rivalry with Knuckles, and Knuckles is far more friendly to Tails than he is to Sonic. The two of them spend a lot of time together, and Knuckles seems to be the second most admired person by Tails (after Sonic).
When Tails first met Knuckles, in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, they started off as enemies, because of Dr. Eggman, who tricked Knuckles into thinking Sonic and Tails were trying to steal the Master Emerald. Then, Knuckles mistakenly helped Dr. Eggman and tried to keep Sonic and Tails from stopping the Death-Egg's re-launch. However, in Sonic & Knuckles, when Knuckles discovered that Dr. Eggman had tricked him, he joined forces with Sonic and Tails to keep Dr. Eggman and his robots from stealing the Master Emerald, and Knuckles developed a bond with both Sonic and Tails during the game, becoming a close friend to both of them.
Although they do not have any rivalry with each other, however, Knuckles can get sometimes irritated by Tails' childish nature, as well as his nerdy behavior, as seen in Sonic Riders, when Tails' long and nerdy explanation of how to work Extreme Gear even makes Knuckles' eyes spin like crazy so angry, he was. Despite that, Knuckles has shown several times that he cares about Tails, almost like a little brother. In Sonic Heroes, Knuckles comforts Tails by saying he has nothing to worry when the fox cub started worrying about Dr. Eggman's plans; in the same game, the two of them were also hanging out together in the Tornado 2, before reuniting with Sonic, which indicates how close Tails and Knuckles are. Similarly, in Sonic Riders, Knuckles angrily and furiously defended Tails from Wave when the latter mocked Knuckles' friend and his Extreme Gear, leading Knuckles to angrily say that Tails is better than Wave in anything. In Sonic Forces, Tails reveals to admire Knuckles' wisdom and leadership skills, and Tails also shows to love and cares about Knuckles, as he wanted, them to be friends forever at the end of the game, which Knuckles agrees on with.
Although they are close friends, Tails and Knuckles had fought each other on a few occasions (usually when Knuckles has been tricked by Dr. Eggman), but in the end, there any never any resentments between them.
Dr. Eggman[]
In every game since his debut, Tails has been one of Dr. Eggman's biggest enemies along with Sonic, whether he is against him head on or helping out Sonic in any way he can. At first, Tails was useful as a hostage, which later turned into a worse situation for Dr. Eggman. Dr. Eggman's plans are always foiled by Sonic and Tails, sometimes because he targets one and forgets about the other (this occurred in Sonic Adventure 2, when Dr. Eggman was stopped by Tails on the Space Colony ARK after he blasted Sonic into space; it also happens in numerous episodes of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog).
In Sonic Adventure, Dr. Eggman had to race Tails to the missile he launched into Station Square, but could not reach it in time. He retaliated by using the giant Egg Walker but was again stopped by Tails. In Sonic Adventure 2, Tails had a rivalry with Dr. Eggman, fighting him directly in the Cyclone twice - once on Prison Island (to which Dr. Eggman said "I can't lose to Tails!" after being defeated), the second time on the Space Colony ARK, after Dr. Eggman blasted Sonic into space. After this, the rivalry seemed to cease, and Tails and Dr. Eggman were seen talking to each other in a somewhat civil way at the end of the game. Dr. Eggman also seemed to develop a respect and liking for him during the events of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, due to their shared skill with machines.
In Sonic Colors, Dr. Eggman charged up a mind control beam and shot it at Sonic, but Tails quickly pushed Sonic out of the way so that he got hit instead. Dr. Eggman used this to his advantage and made Tails run at supersonic speeds to block Sonic's way. Dr. Eggman then dared Sonic to fight his best friend to get to him, but Sonic refused. Dr. Eggman kept pushing and prepared Tails for an attack, but the mind control device then ran out of energy.
In Sonic Generations, Classic Dr. Eggman asked Modern Dr. Eggman who all of Sonic's "modern" friends were. Modern Dr. Eggman's reply was that they were insignificant and that they should only worry about Sonic and Tails, believing they are the only real threats.
In Sonic Lost World, Tails dislikes working with Dr. Eggman even more than Sonic does, jokingly making a comment about Cubot's voice chip looking like it was made by a two-year-old in an attempt to tease and fight Dr. Eggman. However, Dr. Eggman later saves Tails from being attacked by an aggressive Cubot. After Tails is captured, Dr. Eggman says they should make sure Tails' sacrifice wasn't in vain. They become enemies again after the Deadly Six are defeated and Dr. Eggman reemerges as the villain.
In Sonic Forces, Tails retained some of the rivalry with Dr. Eggman, specifically jokingly mocking Dr. Eggman's qualities as scientists, or failings within, such as jokingly claiming that Dr. Eggman's "underestimation" of his expectations meant that Dr. Eggman actually failed, later after the Rookie undid Dr. Eggman's ultimate plan via a prototype Phantom Ruby, Tails, in an attempt to jokingly tease Dr. Eggman, told him that a good scientist always "checks and double-checks" their work.
Shadow the Hedgehog[]
Tails and Shadow were at first enemies when they first met in Sonic Adventure 2, because Shadow was impersonating Sonic and got him thrown in jail at Prison Island. Also, Shadow intended to destroy the whole Earth to avenge his best friend Maria's death, and Tails, as a superhero, had to stop him. However, the two later join forces at the end of the game to save the planet from the Space Colony ARK. Despite that, Tails and Shadow still can be considered enemies depending on their goals (more specifically, on Shadow's goal). Depending on Shadow's goals, Tails and Shadow can be either allies or enemies.
Times where they were enemies include Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle and Sonic Rivals 2. In Sonic Heroes, they were still enemies and they fought briefly because Shadow and Rouge provoked Sonic, Tails and Knuckles into fighting them. In Sonic Battles, Tails and Shadow fought each other physically because Tails resisted giving up Emerl to Shadow. Shadow threatened Tails that he would have to give Emerl up or else they would fight for him, Tails admitted that he admires Shadow's spirit but would not give up in a fight. When Tails won the fight, Shadow warned him that he would be back again to get Emerl, but Rouge showed up and told Shadow to go back to Night Babylon. In Sonic Rivals 2, Tails and Sonic competes with Shadow and Metal Sonic to see which duo would catch Dr. Eggman (Eggman Nega in disguise) first.
Times they were allies include for example Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, where they work very well together and support each other's ideas. Also, when Dr. Eggman suggests they build a weapon to hurt the enemy, and Tails says he has a better idea, Shadow with a smile asks why he is not surprised. Shadow is actually the second most helpful member of Tails' team in Metropolis, helping Tails with numerous mechanical ideas with Dr. Eggman. He is also very helpful if the player is looking for Omega, often giving tips to tell of where Omega would have gone if he had gotten the chance. If the player succeeds in finding Omega, Shadow thanks Tails for helping him. Overall, their relationship depends on Shadow's goal. Due to Tails' naïve and sweet nature, he does not hate Shadow despite him being Sonic's arch-rival and Tails consider Shadow as a friend of his. However, Shadow visibly only sees Tails as an ally, thinking of him as just "another of Sonic's annoying friends", and doesn't seem to mind him (as Shadow's arch-rival is only Sonic). Despite that, Shadow has shown respect to Tails' abilities to certain point, and each has believed in the other's capabilities during their many adventures.
Wave the Swallow[]
Wave is Tails' arch-rival. They rivalries in almost everything, but they have a special rivalry at inventions since they both are smart. The two first met each other in Sonic Riders, when Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) signed up against their new rivals, the Babylon Rogues (Jet, Wave and Storm) in the Ex-World Grand Prix, which was actually apart from another Doctor Eggman's scheme. In this competition, Tails had to customize three Extreme Gears for him, Sonic and Knuckles, to compete. He first met Wave when she was walking and looked at the Gear he customized. Wave was impressed by Tails' work, but could not admit it due to her proud and arrogance, and instead she mocked Tails' Gear by calling it a 'piece of junk', which started the rivalry between them since Tails does not like being insulted on his inventions. Wave also teases him by calling him "shorty" due to his young age (however, in Sonic Free Riders, she changes that nickname for "shrimp"). Tails hates Wave because of that. That can be seen in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, when Wave was hurt by the robots in the game, Tails is seen in the screen trying to help her get up. This is also seen Sonic Free Riders, where after their race against each other, no matter if Tails wins or loses, he compliments "Your Gear is still as amazing as ever, Wave". In the same game later, Tails offers himself to help Wave see what's wrong with her Gears, only to be rudely rejected. Despite that, Wave does not reciprocate the friendship and instead hates Tails, seeing him as nothing more than an annoying kid and a rival who she always has to beat up. This can be seen in Sonic Free Riders, where after their race against each other, Tails compliments "Your Gear is still as amazing as ever, Wave" (both if he wins or loses). If Tails wins, Wave does not take his comment seriously and rudely asks him if he was being sarcastic. If Wave wins, she shows off her victory by telling Tails to "try not to sound so surprised". Her hatred is also seen when Tails offers himself to help Wave see what is wrong with her Gears, which she rudely rejects him, due to their arch-rivalry and her hatred towards him.
Rouge the Bat[]
Tails and Rouge share a bitter and fierce rivalry with each other, comparable to Sonic and Shadow's bitter arch-rivalry. Though they are not arch-rivals (as Tails' arch-rival is Wave the Swallow, and Rouge's arch-rival is Amy Rose), the two still share a bitter rivalry with each other, which can range from friendly competitions to fierce death battles. Their relationship is basically a never-ending competition between the two.
The two first met in Sonic Adventure 2, though Tails was basically unaware of Rouge's presence, but this was because Rouge was sent by Eggman to spy on Tails when he was trying to find the President. The two only met each other personally at the end of the game, where they, along with Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow and even Dr. Eggman join forces to defeat the Biolizard. The two then meet each other again in Sonic Heroes, where they have their first physical fight against each other due to Rouge and Shadow taunting Tails, Sonic and Knuckles into fighting them. However, in the same game later, Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) teams up with Team Dark (Rouge, Shadow and Omega) to defeat Metal Sonic in the final battle of the game. Since then, Tails and Rouge have turned into bitter rivals in a never-ending competition between them.
Tails and Rouge frequently fight due to their own views on justice and morality and how to act on them. Their constant disagreements quickly turn into outright death matches. Each does not care what the other thinks of their views. In a sense, the fox cub and the teenage bat are polar opposites in every way; while Tails is educated, naïve, gentle, shy, cute, innocent, selfless, heroic and big-hearted, Rouge is arrogant, prideful, stubborn, fearless, selfish, self-centered, narcissistic and greedy. Almost every time they meet, they fight ferociously. Due to Tails' good and sweet nature, he is willing to accept defeat, but Rouge is not, never, ever willing to accept defeat from Tails due to her pride and arrogance. Their rivalry has developed over time and is now more friendly, yet still intense as Rouge thinks that Tails is her rival in all aspects of life.
Despite their fierce rivalry, Tails does not hate Rouge due to his naivety and innocence, which makes him consider Rouge as a friend of his. Also, despite her pride, Rouge also does not seem to completely hate Tails, as at the same time she finds him annoying and a nuisance, she also seems to find him cute and funny, as stated by herself in Sonic Battle. Similarly, the two are willing to put their differences aside and join forces for the greater good. In Sonic Heroes, they team up to defeat Metal Sonic at the final battle. In Sonic Battle, although Rouge initially teases Tails with her charm because she thinks it is cure and funny how he reacted (she even kissed him), she was however very helpful and supportive of him, as she gave him the accesso card for the Central Computer Room, distracted Shadow, and told Tails how to escape the Guard Robots. However, he later had to stop her from stealing a Chaos Emerald. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), they team up, along with Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow, to return to their proper time period (as they were trapped in 200 years in the future), and later on they join forces in collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds to revive their friend Sonic. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Rouge will be sometimes snarky at the plans Tails and Dr. Eggman comes up with but still shows a playful affection for Tails.
Overall, while the two still are at odds because of their conflicting views, there is also a mutual respect between them. They are both willing to put their differences aside and help each other when needed. In recent games, Rouge is more confident about Tails doing what is right and Tails has more acceptance of Rouge's narcissistic behavior.
Cream the Rabbit[]
Tails and Cream are really good and close friends, and have a lot in common with each other; both are shy, naïve, polite, intelligent, gullible, educated, friendly, innocent, gentle, sweet and big-hearted. Also, both Tails and Cream are very young; 8 years-old and 6 years-old respectively. The two of them spends a lot of time together and supports each other ideas very well. Many fans believe that they might have a romantic interest in each other, at least in the games (since in other incarnations, Tails has a crush on Cosmo in Sonic X or Zooey in Sonic Boom), and though this has not been confirmed by the series development team, this is very likely.
In Sonic Free Riders, Tails said that Cream's Extreme Gear was really good in the race to which Cream replied "Well, sure! That means a lot coming from you, Mr. Tails!". In Sonic Rush, Tails shows that he cares about Cream and is very protective of her, telling her to stay away from Blaze as she was a suspect. Cream also compliments Tails to Blaze, saying that her he is a "really nice boy", which means that Cream likes Tails.
There have also had instances of their possible romantic interest on each other in the Mario & Sonic series. In the Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, after the Phantasmal Fog clones try to attack Cream, Tails assures her she'll be safe while Mario, Sonic, and Luigi hold them back. He then lashes out at the clones for trying to attack her. In Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, they are partners for Beach Volleyball on Day 2 of Mario's Story. Cream states that they have the best teamwork.
Overall, Tails and Cream are really good friends, and many fans believe them to have a romantic interest in each other at least in the games. Despite the lack of confirmation by official sources, they may have a crush on each other, but never admit it. Additionally, in some games, Cream is Amy's equivalent of Tails to Sonic, often helping Amy out or trying to get her out of bad situations like Amy's compulsion to push herself too far especially when aroused to anger.
Charmy Bee[]
The two hardly interact, but Tails and Charmy are allies and pretty good friends. The two of them have a lot in common; both Tails and Charmy are very young kids, having 8 and 6 years-old respectively, both have a big heart, a great and strong sense of humor, both are sweet, gentle and friendly, always wanting to make new friends, and both are very naïve and innocent due to their young ages. Despite having a lot of common, Charmy is considerably more immature than Tails, which makes him come off as annoying or even a nuisance sometimes. This can make Charmy unintentionally annoy or embarrass Tails in the few times they do interact with each other, but the two keep a strong friendship and alliance.
Tails and Charmy also show a good partnership, such as in Sonic Heroes when they joined forces to defeat Metal Sonic in the final battle of the game and once again in Sonic Forces, where they both are part of the Resistance. In the post-credits scene of Sonic Forces, the two of them want to be "friends forever", and both agree with it.
