The Luminary is the overarching protagonist of the Dragon Quest franchise, being the main protagonist of Dragon Quest XI and the first hero to be bestowed of the title "Erdrick". He is a young man from the village of Cobblestone. He is the reincarnation of an ancient hero who once saved the world, and on his sixteenth birthday he sets out on his journey in order to fulfill his destiny.
He was voiced by Mitsuki Saiga in the Japanese version, and by Rasmus Hardiker in the English version.
Personality[]
While he is a silent protagonist, there are many instances in the game where he shows a lot of personality. Particularly in flashbacks, where his younger self is actually provided with dialogue and shown to be rather mischievous, often pulling pranks on the locals of his home village. Considering his upbringing, being in a small village, he had grown up being rather sheltered and innocent to some degree.
During the events of the game, he is shown to be quite easily manipulated by his own fears and insecurities. According to dialogue provided by Veronica, he tends to daydream often and is rather shy. While he wasn't the best leader at the start of the story, he grows into his title of the Luminary and won't back down if it's for the greater good of Erdrea, or even just a random person in seek of assistance. However, he is shown to be terribly afflicted by the hardships of his journey, often being implied to blame himself for many of the tragedies that took place, such as when he lost the power of the Luminary to Mordegon, who used his power to eliminate Yggdrasil, causing so many deaths, including the death of one of his allies, Veronica.
Later in the story, the Luminary is given the option to go back in time by himself to prevent this from happening, and he does so without hesitation, showing not only his caring nature through the sacrifice, but showing that he would do whatever it takes to undo his mistake.
Appearance[]
The present Luminary is a young man with blue eyes and brown chin-length hair in a bob cut. On his left hand, he bears a mysterious mark that has appeared since the day he was born. The mark glows when the hero is in danger. He wears a long, sleeveless brown and purple leather tunic over a black long-sleeved shirt, brown trousers, and tan leather boots. Around his waist, he wears a leather belt with a small bag attached and he carries a scabbard across his back. (Info from the Dragon Quest Wiki.)
Biography[]
The hero was born to Queen Eleanor and King Irwin, both really happy to know that their son is the reincarnation of the Luminary, a legendary hero who once saved the land. King Irwin wanted to name him Erdrick, but the queen then proposed the player chosen name, which he kept. The same night, King Irwin went to a reunion, where all the kings were sitting across a table to discuss the coming of the Luminary, in which the kings prove King Irwin to be determined to see his son grow into the legendary hero he is destined to be. Unfortunately, this moment of happiness fades away as the kingdom gets attacked by a giant hoard of monsters, in which almost all the kingdom falls to the ground. Queen Eleanor and Princess Jade manage to escape while King Irwin fights monster after monster, only for the queen to give her life to save the Princess and his newborn baby. Jade then falls into a river, and because she can't keep with the aggressive currents of the river, let's the Luminary go on his basket. King Irwin then is backstabbed and killed by King Carnelian, possessed by Mordegon, and convinces his knights that the Luminary is actually the Dark One. After the storm, a newborn Luminary arrives on a small town called Cobblestone, where his now adoptive grandfather Chalky finds him on the river while fishing. Seeing the mark on his hand and a handwritten letter of his true heritage, he knows the baby is going to grow up to be someone important and raises him as his own grandson.
Living in Cobblestone[]
The Luminary lives most of his life up to that moment in the small town of Cobblestone, not knowing of his royal past. He then meets his childhood best friend Gemma, who cares about him very deeply. When both him and Gemma are 16, they climb up the Cobblestone Tor in which Cobblestone teens can prove themselves, something The Luminary does almost flawlessly. When they get to the top, Gemma is ambushed by a flying monster, and almost falls. The Luminary, desperate, runs to her to help her climb up, but the monster tries to assault him too. The mark of Erdwin in his hand, then, illuminates, and calls holy lightning to the monster, defeating him. Not knowing what happened, The Luminary and Gemma exit the Cobblestone Tor and try to ask his adoptive mother, Amber, if she knows anything.
Day of departure[]
When the Luminary asks if she knows anything, she is shocked to find out that his father was right, tells him his true heritage. When the night comes, Gemma is visibly distraught that her childhood friend needs to go, and tells him he can come back anytime. The next day, he departs and goes to the kingdom of Heliodor to talk with the king.
