~ The Coachman to the transfigured donkeys. |
The Coachman is one of the main antagonists of Disney's 2nd full-length animated feature film Pinocchio, which is based on the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by the late Carlo Collodi.
He is an evil and greedy old man (or possibly a demon in disguise) who turns naughty boys into donkeys and sells them off for slavery whilst making himself a profit.
He was voiced by the late Charles Judels, who also played Stromboli in the same film.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He pretends to be a friend to children, but in reality, he is a corrupter towards them.
- He encourages boys to engage in bad behavior, knowing the magic that pervades Pleasure Island (an amusement park across the sea, which he runs) will turn children into donkeys.
- He abuses his own minions with his whip to ensure complete obedience.
- Not only are these children turned into donkeys (which is a terrible fate on its own), but these children are eventually sold as ordinary animals as if they were never human at all, making it more or less a fate worse than death. As Alexander would imply, these kids will never see their families again. It is implied that the donkeys who can still talk are eventually disposed of once the Coachman finishes selling the children who have lost their ability to speak.
- Made even worse still is that the salt mines and circuses likely had no idea that the "donkeys" they were purchasing were once human children. The Coachman, in his deceptions, presents them as mere animals, concealing the horrific truth behind their transformations and leaving the buyers oblivious to the horrific origins of their "products."
- And while one could argue they knew and just didn't care, that is a prejudicial thing to automatically assume about corporates, especially because the movie never once implies that.

- He pulls an up-close slasher smile that has scared countless generations of children.
- Even Honest John and Gideon are afraid of working with him, although they ultimately decide to comply. This is partly because the Coachman gave them a generous amount of money to do so. From what Honest John and Gideon say, Pleasure Island has such a horrible reputation that people don't openly speak of it. The boys don’t realize how horrible Pleasure Island is until it’s too late.
- Because of him, Pinocchio ends up with donkey ears and a tail just before he manages to escape. When the little wooden puppet is finally reunited with Geppetto, he gives his father a nasty surprise when he reveals his ears and tail, and brays while laughing, which scares the living daylight out of Figaro and Cleo. Presumably, his actions would haunt Pinocchio for the rest of his life, as one of his friends was a victim, even if Lampwick was not as nice to Jiminy Cricket as he should have been. It's not confirmed whether Pinocchio told Geppetto about what he experienced, however.
- Unlike most Disney villains or villains in other films made during the Hays Office era of Hollywood, Coachman is one of the very few Disney Villains that never faces his comeuppance whatsoever and likely continues to sell transformed boys as slaves. However, it is possible that Pinocchio alerted the authorities to his crimes, getting him arrested.
- He lacks the humor possessed by Honest John, the charisma possessed by Stromboli, and the "Evil is Cool" vibe possessed by Monstro, and unlike Gideon, he has dialogue and characterization, making him far more hateable than the other villains.
