Carmine Falcone is the overarching antagonist of the 2022 film The Batman and one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside the Riddler) of its 2024 HBO spin-off miniseries The Penguin.
He is a powerful crime lord in Gotham City who is connected to the majority of the top officials. He is ultimately the one who caused the Riddler to begin his serial killings of top officials in Gotham City.
He is portrayed by John Turturro in The Batman and Mark Strong in The Penguin.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- He was a very neglectful father to his illegitimate daughter Selina Kyle.
- He ruled over Gotham City for 20 years with most of the top officials on his payroll, doing absolutely nothing about all of the issues rampant in the city, such as drug deals and crime.
- It is implied that he takes sick pleasure from strangling women, as he has done this to Maria Kyle and Annika Kosolov, and attempted to do the same to Selina Kyle, who is his own daughter.
- The recording over his murder of Annika was so disturbing that it managed to invoke visible disgust from Batman.
- He threatens anyone who tries to expose his actions by killing their entire family, according to Gil Colson, showing he is also a coward.
- After being told to scare a news reporter by Thomas Wayne, Falcone killed the news reporter and it is heavily implied he orchestrated the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne afterward, which traumatized their son Bruce into becoming Batman as an adult.
- Once Thomas and Martha Wayne were dead, he took this as an opportunity to steal millions of dollars from the renewal fund, forcing many children to live in poverty. One of these children was Edward Nashton, which eventually led to him becoming the Riddler.
- If he really did orchestrate the death of Bruce's parents, this makes Falcone responsible for both him and Edward becoming the vigilantes they are now.
- While his comic counterpart is a family man and a person with some honor, this version is instead a ruthless and awful person to the core.
