“Forgive me...Princess Nyna...”
—Macellan's death quote in Shadow Dragon

Macellan is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Book 1 of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, and their remakes. He is found imprisoned with Dolph, Midia, Boah and Tomas in Castle Archanea. He also bears a striking similarity to his fellow knight Dolph, which is mentioned in their ending titles. In his ending he settles near the border and forms a band of watchmen.

Profile[]

Archanea[]

Macellan's earliest in-universe appearance is in Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga, where he, Nyna, and the rest of Midia's knights attempt to get Nyna and Boah out of the Dolhr-occupied palace. However, they are ultimately captured by Camus.

By the time the Archanean League reaches the palace, Dolhr has decided to execute Macellan and the others, however together with Dolph, Macellan acts as a shield for the other prisoners, giving them enough time for a rescue by the league. Macellan leaves the army at the war's end.

While Macellan is absent in Book 2 of the original Mystery of the Emblem, he is added in the remake, and automatically joins in chapter 16. By the end of war, he forms a group of watchmen which his comrades Tomas and Dolph join.

In the remake, Macellan is shown to be a gourmet who enjoys cooking.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE[]

Macellan appears in Chapter 6 during the first trial to acquire the Opera of Light: Fire Emblem as one of four boss Mirages. He fights alongside Gordin, Dolph, and Linde.

Macellan is, to put it bluntly, a terrible unit; arguably the worst unit in both the NES Shadow Dragon and Book 1 of Mystery. His bases come up short next to many units in even the first few chapters, and scarcely outclass a level 1 Draug, a character who is himself regarded as mediocre and has had more than half the game to improve. What is worse, Macellan is a Knight, in a game that does not look kindly upon his class, due to its low Movement, low Speed, and, in Shadow Dragon, inability to promote. Due to the low doubling thresholds, Macellan will be doubled by virtually any enemy to not possess 0 Speed. Lastly, there is the issue of his growths, which are pitiful; Macellan has among the worst growths in Shadow Dragon, and the few characters he outclasses are either healers or a handful of prepromotes. This effectively ensures that even a raised Macellan will not improve much from his base performance, and he will almost require at least one statbooster to start pulling his weight. His Mystery incarnation can at least promote and wield lances indoors, making him marginally better, but these gains do little to reverse his standing.

The transition to the DS has not given Macellan much to be cheerful for. His growths have been slightly buffed, but remain some of the worst in the game, and he occupies one of its worst classes in Knight. As a Knight, he will be doubled almost constantly and struggle to perform his tank duties, and in any other class, he will be robbed of his lance rank and forced to work up from iron. As before, he boasts a bad start and worse potential, and is largely outclassed by any unit short of generics.

Though Macellan has admittedly high growths, his bases are very subpar, with him suffering from the common issues of late-joining units in New Mystery. He is somewhat on the faster side for a General, but his Speed is outclassed by many other characters, and as a prepromote, he will be slow to train. This makes him largely ineffectual as a unit, and particularly nonfunctional as a General, due to the enemies being able to overpower him with little difficulty. That said, Macellan does possess one notable strong point in the form of his bow rank: when reclassed as a Sniper, he gains A-rank Bows, allowing him to wield Parthia and take down powerful flying enemies in a single shot. Though he is far from the only character who can manage Parthia use at his join time, it is the easiest way to make him useful; his poor initial bases matter far less when he can hit at range and utilize effective damage.
