The Hecteyes (ヘクトアイズ, Hekutoaizu?), also known as the Hect Eyes, 8 eye, or Gazer, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in Final Fantasy II. It is commonly a blob-like enemy with numerous eyes all over their bodies.
Overview[]
The Hecteyes is similar the Flan, usually pink or red, with eyes protruding throughout their bodies. It is likely based on the mythical Hyakume (百目), a yokai of Japanese folklore. It is typically a standalone species, although in Final Fantasy XII it is a member of the flan genus.
The Hecteyes is often a dangerous creature capable of inflicting several status ailments on the player party, while also having abilities allowing iit to absorb a target's HP and MP. Later titles would give the Hecteyes more combat prowess, being able to physically assault targets with its extended body parts, while also being able to shoot energy from its eyes.

Final Fantasy II[]
The Hecteyes appears as an enemy encountered near Mysidia after obtaining Ultima and in the Jade Passage. It is a dangerous enemy with a wide variety of high-level status-inflicting abilities, including Stun XVI, Confuse XVI, Slow XVI, Drain XVI, Warp IX, Dispel XVI, Osmose XVI, and Gaze V. Even its basic attacks can inflict instant death.
Final Fantasy VII[]

The Hecteyes appears as an enemy encountered in Terra. It is an undead-demon type enemy that can can drain HP with Absorb and inflict sleep with Hypnotize. Its most formidable attack is Roulette, which kills one target at random and can be learned as Blue Magic by Quina Quen.
Final Fantasy XI[]
Hecteyes are a family of amorphs, with the common Hecteyes being encountered as an enemy in Ranguemont Pass and Attohwa Chasm. Hecteyes commonly drop Hecteyes Eyes and Mercury, which are used in various crafting recipes. Blue Mages can learn the Death Ray spell from members of the family.
Final Fantasy XII[]
The Hecteyes appears as an enemy encountered in the Henne Mines and the Draklor Laboratory. Its bestiary entry claims only one of its pairs of eyes function as eyes, and the rest are to confuse those who try to strike its eyes.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
Hecteyes appear as a family of voidsent, with the common Hecteyes being encountered as an enemy in The Lost City of Amdapor.
Final Fantasy XV[]
The Hecteyes appears as a daemon encountered in the Daurell Caverns and Keycatrich Trench maze, and during the hunt A Nightmare Upon the Water. It is weak to Holy and polearms.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time[]
The Hecteyes appears as a boss encountered in the Mine. Unlike most incarnations, it appears as a large toad-like creature, though it still posses four large eyes as well as multiple false eyes across its body.

Etymology[]
"Hecto" or "Hecta" is a prefix used in the metric system to denote a factor of one hundred. "Hecteyes" refers to the creature's numerous eyes.
