Velvet is a worm-like metahuman who infiltrated the Doom Patrol on behalf of Task Force X.
History
Drawn from Task Force X's espionage unit by Peacemaker to spy on the Doom Patrol,[1] Velvet infiltrated the team using a humanoid construct known as "Worm." After staging a "Peacehammer" robot attack, Worm was rescued by and invited to join the Doom Patrol at their Kansas headquarters The Shelter, with Velvet posing as a symbiotic pet carried within the construct's torso. Traveling through The Shelter's system of ducts, Velvet gained access to the Think Tank II, a device amplifying the psychic powers of team member Mento, who discovered Velvet's presence. The infiltrator reported back to Peacemaker who gave the order for the Think Tank to be destroyed, only for Worm to refuse, having been won over to the Doom Patrol's cause. While Worm's deception was uncovered and the construct was destroyed, Velvet was able to pass unsuspected into the Doom Patrol's ranks, fulfilling the mission's true objective.[2]
Velvet later accompanied the team into action against their longtime foe the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man,[3] monitored the untrusted Niles Caulder during the Patrol's investigation of Metagen Inc.,[4] and aided Beast Girl in battle with Veiniac[5] and Gemini of the Brotherhood of Evil. When their Task Force X superiors located and attacked the Doom Patrol following the Brotherhood's defeat, Velvet escaped with the rest of the team.[6]
