Gerard Way (b. April 9, 1977) is an American musician and comic book writer, known in the comics industry for his run on Doom Patrol, and creating the DC Comics imprint Young Animal.

Professional History

Gerard Way is an American singer, songwriter, and comic book writer, most prominently recognized as the lead vocalist of the rock band My Chemical Romance, a position he held from the band's formation in 2001 to their split in 2013. He spent the following years focusing on his solo music career and comic books, before MCR reformed in 2019.

In the comics industry, Way is perhaps best known for creating the comic series The Umbrella Academy with artist Gabriel Bá for Dark Horse Comics, the first two volumes of which were released between 2007 and 2009. It acquired a cult following and, after a long hiatus, returned with a third volume and prequel tie-in, and was adapted into a hit Netflix series, on which Way served as co-executive producer for all four seasons.

Way created The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys with co-writer Shaun Simon and artist Becky Cloonan, a comic miniseries that served as a sequel to MCR's fourth studio album, Danger Days. After MCR split up, Way contributed to Marvel Comics' Edge of the Spider-Verse series in 2014, in which he co-created fan-favorite character Peni Parker, an alternate universe version of Spider-Man.

In 2016, Way founded the Young Animal imprint at DC Comics, which allowed creators to focus on experimental and mature comic storytelling with lesser known DC characters, similar to Vertigo. Way penned the imprint's flagship series, Doom Patrol, with art from Nick Derington, leading to critical and commercial success. He also co-wrote Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye with Jon Rivera, and the Young Animal and Justice League crossover event Milk Wars.

After a brief hiatus from DC, Way returned in 2019 as co-writer for the limited series Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds, sharing writing duties with Jeremy Lambert, Steve Orlando, Becky Cloonan, and Michael W. Conrad. In 2020, he released a Fabulous Killjoys sequel series entitled The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: National Anthem. In 2024, Way and Simon released the miniseries Paranoid Gardens through Dark Horse.
