- This is what I've been waiting -- praying for. A chance to make it up to you -- all of you. I can't bring you back -- but I can answer for my sins.

All around the Earth, heroes do their best to stem the demon horde. In New York, the Justice Society of America appear with Doctor Fate. Doctor Fate reconstitutes Hal Jordan.
Doctor Occult casts a spell summoning the souls of deceased members of the Green Lantern Corps and grants Jordan the ability to lead them against the Spectre.
In orbit around the Earth, the heroes are able to wrest the Spear of Destiny from Starfire, who comes to her senses. Captain Marvel is able to handle it safely.
In Hell, Sebastian Faust (New Earth) reveals that he is in possession of the remains of the Blue Devil ). Faust had gathered his remains in a mystical bag after he died at the hands of Mist. Faust resurrects Blue Devil, whose origin is tied to Nebiros. Blue Devil helps defeat Nebiros, wresting the Trident of Lucifer from him. Nebiros’ defeat returns Faust’s soul, because he lost it to Nebiros’ father. The heroes attempt to reignite the fires of Hell, but all their efforts are unsuccessful. Realizing what must be done, Faust kills Enchantress. Only a true evil act like this can re-ignite the fires of Hell, and Faust has sacrificed his soul once more to save reality. Mysteriously, Superman is not disgusted by Faust’s act. Blue Devil takes the Trident of Lucifer with him becoming its newest wielder.
On Earth, the power the Spectre (Asmodel) gained by absorbing the fires of Hell abandons him. The demons and lost souls begin to be sucked back to Hell, with the rift closing behind them. Superman and the other heroes return from Hell and join the fight.
Captain Marvel uses the Spear of Destiny to tear a hole in the Spectre’s chest. This allows Hal Jordan to enter the Spectre and merge with him. However, with the heroes seemingly victorious, Superman is revealed to be possessed. He turns on the heroes and proclaims that he can now seize the powers of the Spectre.
