~ Uta's breakdown as she decides to unleash Tot Musica

Uta is the main antagonist of the 2022 anime movie One Piece Film: Red, the fifteenth installment of the One Piece film series and a major character of the Uta's Past arc in the anime series.

The adopted daughter of Shanks, Uta is a world-famous diva and one of the most cherished songstresses in the world. A young woman full of compassion and an unbreakable drive to aid others, Uta was brutally exposed to the suffering of the people across the globe, and vowed to do everything in her power to create a new age for them to live in peace and happiness.

As time progressed, this began to take a serious toll on her mental well-being, and while she did everything to ultimately try and bring joy and eliminate suffering, her methods of doing so became increasingly warped and downright horrifying. She would ultimately see the error of her ways, and seemingly give her life in order to save everyone in Elegia.

She was voiced by Kaori Nazuka in the Japanese dub and AmaLee in the English dub. While singing, she is voiced by Ado in both dubs.

Personality[]

Uta is generally portrayed as cheerful and optimistic, driven by her strong desire to create a new era of peace and happiness through her singing, even if it means people must live forever in the Uta World. She displays a deep empathy, feeling anger on behalf of a fan who lost loved ones. Uta values her fans' opinions, which causes her to temporarily rethink her plans when some express their disagreement, although the more unstable her mind became, the less capable she was to accept their disagreements.

However, her ideals ultimately take precedence, leading her to silence her fans. She harbors a strong dislike for pirates, blaming them for her fans' suffering and stemming from her father's abandonment. Despite this, she shows a lack of understanding about pirates, as illustrated in her diary where she is unaware of key figures like Donquixote Doflamingo and Charlotte Linlin; her seclusion also left her ignorant about the structure and actions of the World Government. After her vision for New Genesis fails, she acknowledges that some pirates deserve respect and begins to appreciate her father's crew, ultimately aligning herself with Monkey D. Luffy's dream of becoming the Pirate King to create a new world.

Uta struggled with her traumatic past while living in Elegia, isolating herself further through the use of wake-shrooms, which compromised her emotional stability. When her plans and beliefs were challenged, she became mentally unstable, exhibiting erratic and ruthless behavior towards those around her. This escalated to a dangerous level when she attempted to kill Luffy after he disagreed with her vision, although began sobbing, thereby indicating she retained enough sense to feel intense sorrow for the "necessary" evil. Unable to think clearly or negotiate, she dismissed the warnings and pleas of others, fixated on executing her destructive plan for Tot Musica as foretold by prophecies. Her reunion with Shanks pushed her to the brink of madness, leading her to pursue the ritual.

She had strong sense of responsibility to her fans and the world at large, due to being constantly told how her singing talent was great enough to save the world. While she openly blamed Shanks for abandoning her, and claimed he unleashed Tot Musica over a decade ago, this was deflection as she found a transponder snail that recorded the Demon King's rampage, which revealed to her that she was the cause, even if unintentionally. Her guilt was so intense that it escalated her plan to transport all souls to a utopia she created, since she couldn't think of any other way to atone, nor save the world; it also led to her consumption of wake-shrooms to facilitate the plan, which eroded her common sense and emotional stability, which led to her ignoring the fact that it was technically mass murder. She couldn't accept the faults in her plan until Tot Musica went out of control.

In her childhood, Uta was a typical diva who adored jewelry and glamour, avoiding dirt at all costs. She often bullied others, including Luffy, but would complain if they retaliated. While she disapproved of some of her father's and his crew's rough behaviors, she still took pride in being part of the Red-Haired Pirates. Her pride made her somewhat look down on outsiders, as such she initially condescended to Luffy, finding his desire to join the crew as presumptuous and foolish; she rejected Shanks' encouragement for her to socialise with kids close to her own age, since Luffy was a year younger, which she felt was too childish. However, she was competitive, which allowed Shanks to trick her into "competitions" with Luffy, which were essentially just kid games; during them, she grew to enjoy spending time with Luffy, and when he displayed a hidden profundity, she realised that she underestimated him, thus began considering him as her best friend. This period in her life was precious to her, as even when she renounced pirates, part of her costume included a cotton gauntlet that had a print based on child Luffy's terrible drawing of Shanks' straw hat, thus displaying how she still cared deeply for both.

Biography[]

Uta's true origin is unknown, as one day the Red Hair Pirates defeated and robbed another pirate crew, only to discover one of the treasure chests contained a baby, who was Uta. She cried until Shanks awkwardly but sincerely sang a song to calm her, which made her happy. Afterwards, Shanks adopted her as his own daughter.

As a child, Uta was full of energy and joy. She was highly playful and exceptionally easy to make friends with, being overall a very amicable girl. Her greatest passion in life was singing, something that she found as her true calling from a very young age.

During the Red Hair Pirates' routine visits to Windmill Village, Uta would meet Monkey D. Luffy, an enthusiastic, but to her bratty, child, who she looked down on. However, Shanks encouraged her to spend time with someone closer to her own age, thus Uta and Luffy spent time together every visit. Initially, Uta was dismissive of the younger, shorter boy, but eventually Luffy's inherent sunny nature would endear him to her; although, their original habit of arbitrary competitions would repeat throughout their interactions, but becoming more friendly than adversarial. Though, one day, Uta didn't arrive with the Red Hair crew, arising questions from Luffy that weren't answered until years later.

Tragedy would befall Uta, traumatizing her and planting the seeds of darkness in her soul. As a child, the Red Hair Pirates brought her to Elegia, the nation of music; Gordon, king of the country, happily guided her to various musicians and instructors, all of whom wished to experience her heavenly singing. Shanks offered his adopted daughter the opportunity to stay in Elegia, as she couldn't freely fulfill her dreams and potential to be a global diva with a crew of pirates; however, Uta rejected this, wanting to stay with Shanks, which he accepted. However, the sheet music for Tot Musica was drawn to her singing, which was combined with the Sing-Sing Fruit she had eaten perhaps as a baby, thus tricking the young girl into performing the recitation that would unleash the Demon King.

Uta fell into a trance as Tot Musica took its revenge on the country that had imprisoned it; due to Uta's low stamina as a child, the Red Hair Pirates were able to defeat the Demon, resealing it, but unfortunately Tot Musica had already managed to eliminate every citizen of Elegia except Gordon. With the Navy approaching, Gordon was willing to take responsibility for the destruction, but Shanks instead said he would take the blame, since as a pirate, he would seem more likely; both held the same motive, which was to avoid Uta being blamed and punished by the World Government for doing something that wasn't her fault. Shanks left Uta in Gordon's care, while he and the Red Hair Pirates "fled" to appear guilty; following Shanks' instruction, Gordon blamed him for the destruction of Elegia, and claimed that he had abandoned Uta, which broke the young girl's heart and was something she could never truly recover from.

To fulfill part of the promise with Shanks and his own admiration, Gordon adopted Uta, and spent the subsequent years caring for her and helping her train to further advance her inherent singing talent, with the expectation she would one day go out to share her gift with the world.

While Uta would recover from the tragedy and her feelings of abandonment to a certain extent, she became exposed to the widespread suffering in the world brought about by pirates, the Marines and even the World Government. Uta discovered some video transponder snails with which she'd broadcast and communicate with the outside world; with her talent and passion, plus her desire to be a person that could make people happy, she would use her music to spread joy across the sea, in the process becoming famous and beloved the world over. Still, unable to forgive the crimes she saw in her childhood despite even eventually learning the truth, her life goal of bringing about peace and to bring an end to suffering would take Uta down a very dark path.

Despite their separation, Uta still held strong admiration and affection for Luffy, and the time they shared together, as one of her emblems was actually a copy of his terrible drawing of Shanks' straw hat, which he said should be a symbol for their new world that will be better for everyone.

Uta announced a massive concert in Elegia, inviting all of her fans to attend, but broadcasting it via video transponder snails for those who couldn't make the trip. Her concert began innocuously and happily enough; Monkey D. Luffy jumped to the stage to greet Uta, as they had been childhood friends. A group of less friendly pirates stormed the stage, already planning to kidnap her, but after hearing Luffy's unintentional revelation about her being Shanks' daughter, they wanted to capture her even more, since she had gone from world famous diva to daughter of one the Four Emperors - one of the most powerful pirates in the world. A small squad of Big Mom Pirates also attempt to kidnap her, but Luffy and the other Straw Hats defend her; yet Uta nonchalantly dismisses the attack, her next song appearing to warp reality, allowing her to trap the enemy pirates in giant floating sheet music.

Uta invites Luffy to forsake piracy to join her in making a better world, but he refuses due to his dream of becoming King of the Pirates; Uta is disappointed, but uses her powers to conjure endless flying soldiers to capture the Straw Hats. Luffy refuses to fight and appears next to be caught in the spectral sheet music, but he is rescued by Trafalgar D. Water Law. Through conversations with Gordon and Coby - who was sent as a government agent of Sword - the extent of Uta's powers and desperation are revealed; her apparent reality warping powers were only possible because her Sing-Sing Fruit gave her the ability to drag a person's soul into a parallel reality created by the Sing-Sing user, and that dream world is altered at her whims through song, however, she needed to remain conscious to do this, thereby had been consuming multiple wake-shrooms, a mushroom that kept one awake and alert, but also causes erratic mood swings and psychological instability.

Uta briefly talks to her second foster father, Gordon, asking if he will help her and if understands her; Gordon answers he understands, and is willing to help, but not in the mad plan that she is undergoing. Uta reveals she found the sheet music for Tot Musica, which terrifies Gordon, and he warns her that she doesn't understand the danger the evil score poses and begs her to reconsider her plans. Uta refuses and leaves him.

In the real world of Elegia, the Navy had arrived, including heavy hitters, Admirals Fujitora and Kizaru, which indicated how serious a threat the World Elders saw Uta as; the Navy are unable to move against Uta due to the threat of her death trapping everyone in the Sing-Sing World. Another attribute of her power is that she can possess the real-world bodies of the slumbering victims of her song, even using their abilities and powers, which she does to ensnare more Marines and hold the rest at bay, using the possessed as both foot-soldiers and hostages.

Throughout the course of the concert on Elegia, Uta both from her own mental instability as well as the effects of the mushrooms she was eating, would descend completely into madness. After the true nature of her utopia was exposed to the crowd, while some still wanted it, the other half rejected her, and Uta would decree she would bring them peace no matter the cost, even if that meant imprisoning their souls for all eternity; she used her powers to transform the concert attendees into toys and objects, under the delusion that they would be happier. Even more terrifying, Uta's entire plan to "save" them was to kill herself, since eating wake-shrooms long enough results in death, which unlike falling asleep, does not restore souls to their bodies, rather essentially everyone both present and watching the show at home would have their spirits trapped in her dream world.

Luffy again confronts Uta, attempting to convince her to stop and let everyone go before it's too late; Uta attacks him again, and almost recreates Gold Roger's execution until he breaks free from it. Uta tries to convince Luffy that Shanks manipulated them both and was truly evil, since she believed that he destroyed Elegia and abandoned her, however, Luffy refutes this claim, noting that Shanks would never be so evil and that he loves her, so will be coming to save her from herself.

In the real-world, Uta places his straw hat on Luffy's chest, preparing to stab him; despite her commitment to her plans, she sobs uncontrollably at the thought of killing her oldest, dearest friend. Before Uta's dagger could strike, her hand was caught by Shanks, whereupon she realises he and the other Red Hair Pirates had arrived in Elegia. Upon the arrival of the Red Hair Pirates in the real world, Uta would snap altogether. Her kindness and compassion whittling away, succumbing to uncontrollable rage and hate.

Back in the dream reality, Luffy's allies and enemies-turned-allies arrive to help stop Uta; Trafalgar Law teleports her so that Bartolomeo can trap her in one of his barriers, which he turns sound-proof as to nullify her influence on the dream world.

Following the orders of the heartless Fleet Admiral Akainu, the Marines' attempt to stop Uta and attack the Red Hair Pirates, they blindly fire from and into the sleeping crowd, with one man being shot right in front of Uta, causing her immense distress as they were, she felt, close to the salvation she provided, and she was hysterical at the thought of her fans failing to reach it and their injury or worse being her fault. While the Red Hair Pirates appeared to be calming presence to Uta, the key member of her father, Shanks, had to cross the bay to stop Kizaru's attack, therefore it seemed as though they changed nothing, as Uta announces she will avenge herself against them and all evils of the world.

Uta retrieves the sheet music for Tot Musica; Uta begins the song, which ultimately give rise to the monstrous demon Tot Musica, which if left unchallenged would bring ruin to the world; despite the sound-proof barrier in the dream world, the cursed music destroys it. The Demon King exists simultaneously in the Sing-Sing World and reality, and is completely immune to damage if done in only one world. Its First Movement allows it to continue possession of the sleeping crowd in reality, while also blasting lasers and conjured troopers in both realities.

Luffy dodges Tot Musica's attack, reaching Uta who stood atop it; he criticised the form of her "utopia," since it is cruel and oppressive, and he states she knows it isn't what she wanted when she planned her new world to save everyone. Uta sends a lance to hit him, but Gordon takes the damage. Gordon reveals the truth, in that it was his own carelessness that allowed Uta's singing to reach Tot Musica, and the Red Hair Pirates didn't abandon her, rather they loved her so much that they took the blame for Elegia's destruction to save her.

Luffy excitedly repeats Gordon's revelation and goes to hug Uta in relief, however, Uta knocks him away, then Tot Musica's Second Movement commences, absorbing her to keep her within its shell. Forces, mostly pirates, on both planes of existence avoid the Demon King's attacks and attempt to damage it, to no avail.

Encased in Tot Musica, haunted by the demon's conjured accusations of the dead, Uta tearfully mutters that she already knew Shanks was innocent of Elegia's destruction; during the years of her video broadcasts of her singing, Uta discovered a recorder video snail, which belonged to a government agent, who died in Tot Musica's attack 12 years prior. The agent explains that the child Uta is a monster and the most dangerous person in the world, as she had summoned the Demon King. This revelation horrified Uta to her core, but she had already committed to performing her concert to "save" everyone, and was now fueled by desperation due to the crushing guilt she felt for Elegia's downfall.

The concert audience and added Marines joined the Demon King's attack, with the Red Hair Pirates working hard to non-fatally stop them, since they didn't want Uta to suffer anymore additional guilt.

Gordon begs Uta to stop, noting that nobody should die but him since it was his carelessness that had allowed Tot Musica to find her, and his fear of her powers that prevented her from reengaging with the world beyond Elegia; and he confesses that the evil music only still exists because he loved music so much that he couldn't destroy any of it, even when it is foolish to keep such a dangerous score around. Gordon self-denigrates himself as a foolish coward, but Sanji and Usopp reassure him that he was present for Uta for all these years, which should count for something. Though, Gordon's pleas don't reach Uta as it is now Tot Musica in control, using her powers to widen its influence across both Sing-Sing World and reality, and thereby it evolves into its Third Movement.

Thanks to Coby's leadership skills, and Observation Haki of crewmembers on both sides of reality, the pirates are able to coordinate their attacks and manage to severely damage Tot Musica, with Shanks and Luffy (who slips into Fifth Gear) delivering the finishing blow, which once again seals Tot Musica away. Despite this, its power lingered, as the sleeping people in reality continued to attack, and all of the disembodied souls remained in the fading Sing-Sing World, which would end with their eternal imprisonment.

After the demon's defeat and realizing all the bad she had done in her pursuit of helping others, Uta would give her all to save everyone, showing that to the very end, the only thing she wanted was to make people happy. Shanks offered her medicine that would induce sleep to save her life, since if she stayed awake any longer from the mushrooms, she would die; however, Uta smashes the medicine, then prepares to perform her final act.

Uta sings a beautiful, soothing song from her childhood, which frees everyone's souls trapped in the Sing-Sing World, restoring everyone in the world back to normal. Uta collapses from exhaustion and the mushrooms; despite her pain, Uta notes she is relieved everyone is okay and that she only ever wanted to help people with her music. Before the end, Uta has a conversation with Luffy in a private dream world, where she comments on how he was once a runt, but had now grown to be so strong and impressive; she asks him why he never attacked her, which Luffy replies he doesn't want to ever hurt a friend. Uta gives him encouragement on the path to be King of the Pirates, noting that she believes in him.

The Navy attempt to take Uta into custody, but Shanks unleashes such an immense wave of Conqueror's Haki that the Marines are too intimidated to act, and Fujitora realizes a fight with an Emperor would result in mass civilian casualties from the audience, thus Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates are allowed to take Uta away on their ship.

While Uta's fate is left ambiguous to an extent, it seems heavily implied that she tragically died from the drain of Tot Musica and a side effect of the wake-shrooms. Nevertheless, she had been able to accept her father, Shanks, never abandoned her and continued to love her even when they were apart, re-embrace her belonging as the Red Hair Pirates singer, and reconnect with her dearest friend, Luffy. At the end, she was with the Red Hair Pirates, who she had considered to be her treasured family.

Power and Abilities[]

Uta's singing voice has been described as "otherworldly", enough to award her the title of the greatest diva in the world. Besides her abilities related to singing, Uta has been great with music theory, showing an amazing ability as a lyricist and composer by writing her most popular songs herself.

  • Devil Fruit: Uta ate the Uta Uta no Mi (Sing-Sing), a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, which enables her to send people's consciousness into a Virtual Space called "Uta World" by singing. In this virtual world, she is virtually omnipotent and can do anything she wishes until her energy runs out.
    • Minion Creation: She could manifest an endless line of armed, flying soldiers, which could be swiftly defeated, but she could summon so many that they overwhelm a target with numbers.
    • Giant Musical Staff Generation: She could imprison people in staves that were indestructible, barring the recitation of the specific musical notes along them.
    • Possession: Once a soul was transported to her dream world, she could puppeteer their bodies in the real world, even using their fighting skills and Devil Fruit powers as if they were her own. She was capable of controlling thousands of people at once.
    • Summoning Tot Musica: Uta could sing the cursed score that allowed Tot Musica to manifest in both the Sing-Sing World and real world, with its power continuously growing its influence across both realities in an increasing area, potentially covering the entire world if left unchecked. Tot Musica was invulnerable, unless it were attacked in the dream and real worlds concurrently in the same places with exceptionally powerful hits.
  • Charisma: More than anything else, perhaps, Uta is most armed with an overpowering charisma, which brought her worldly fame through performances via livestreams. Nico Robin had stated that she was the most beloved woman in the world, while Brook, a very famous rockstar, said he was nothing compared to Uta. Indeed, when she put her plan into action of drawing people into Uta World, she was able to capture roughly 70% of all the people in the world. In addition, in Uta World while commanding the whole audience in the pirate hunt, most flowed with her.
  • Strategist: While she tended to ignore logistical flaws in her plans, she was able to orchestrate a scheme that caught pirates, fans, and the World Government's Naval and intelligence organisations completely off-guard.
  • Weapons: Uta is seen wielding a spear and a shield, apart from the fact that she also used a jetpack that enables her to fly, though it was all in the Uta World. In the real world, she had a knife, although she never had any chance to use it.

Trivia[]

  • Uta and Shiki are currently the only movie antagonists that are canon to the series. In Uta's case, she made a brief appearance in Chapter 1055 and episode 1082 in a flashback when Shanks confronts Ryokugyu at Wano.
  • Appropriately Uta's name is Japanese for "song".
  • Uta's songs were originally going to have English covers for the English dubs and were also in development during the production of the movie, but were eventually scrapped and only the Japanese versions are used instead. This is due to Toei Animation expressing their disinterest in giving the staff license to do so.
    • Interestingly, it allowed AmaLee to sell the English covers through digital retailers, which is something she couldn't have done if they were actually used in the film.
  • She was based off Princess♂ from TOPHAMHAT-KYO's musical videos. Interestingly enough, not only did FAKE TYPE. (a band TOPHAMHAT-KYO's part of) compose Uta's song, Fleeting Lullaby, alongside Ado, but they also made their own version of Ado's musical video of the song where Princess replaces Uta.
