Saint Jaygarcia Saturn is one of the main antagonists of the One Piece franchise. He was a high ranking Celestial Dragon and one of the Five Elders who leads the World Government. He was usually seen speaking to the other elders about political and social affairs and coming up with strategies to deal with major issues in the world. He was the arch-nemesis of Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney.
Following the events that transpired on Egghead, he was killed by his master, Imu and his role as the Warrior God of Science and Defense was passed onto Figarland Garling.
He was voiced by Keiichi Noda in Japanese. In English, the late Jerry Russell initially before the role was filled by J.B. Edwards.
Personality[]
Saturn is shown to be interested in maintaining order within the world. Like other members of the Five Elders, he is willing to use extreme violence to stop anyone who is willing to upset the balance of the world as seen by his complicity in the Ohara massacre since the scientists in Ohara wanted to study the Void Century. Like other elders, he is against any person studying the Void Century for reasons not entirely known.
Given the rise of attention Monkey D. Luffy has gotten over the years, Saturn like the rest of the elders strongly dislikes Luffy for his actions. When confronting Luffy for the first time, Saturn is intent on having killed immediately and is shows wariness towards him for being Sun God Nika. Despite his wariness, Saturn does not back down in his fight against Luffy and is willing to stop him on his own. In spite of his wariness to pirates like Luffy, Saturn is shown to have a calm demeanor when in the presence of Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, when the latter was trying to inform them about something important.
In general, he is shown to be mild-mannered and respectful amongst his fellow elders and shown reverence for Imu by bowing down before them, asking for their guidance. He is shown to also hold conversation well with Kizaru when the latter asked about him meeting Dr. Vegapunk.
In addition, Saturn is shown to be strongly against anyone knowing about Imu and their position as a monarch sitting on the Empty Throne. Saturn and the elders, for example, are shown drawing a gun on Cobra as Imu speaks to him with the intent on killing him after their conversation ended. When Sabo attempts to murder all the elders and Imu, Saturn along with the other elders and Imu immediately tries to kill Sabo in return. Saturn, like the other elders and Imu, is shown to be supportive of spreading a lie to frame Sabo as the murderer to Cobra when he was complicit in the latter's murder.
Much like many other Celestial Dragons, Saturn has a low view of humans outside of Mary Geoise and thus shows no shred of remorse for the things he does to them. He extends this to other races, as he told Kuma that his people the Buccaneers deserved to be made slaves for unexplained crime in the past.
As a scientist, he has no qualms on experimenting with people or children, such as a captive Ginny and her daughter Bonney when she was a baby. He is also a schemer when he intended for Vegapunk to install a self-destruction mechanism inside Kuma as an assurance to prevent Kuma from trying to turn against him. He was quite arrogant, as he believed he could tell if Vegapunk tried some alterations but this was a flaw Vegapunk exploited by designing for Kuma to shut down instead of exploding. Similarly, he failed to see that Vegapunk designed the Pacifista's to obey Bonney after he made her the highest authority. He is also willing to disobey Imu's orders of destroying Emet just so he could use Emet's deactivated body to build an army of mechanisms.
After his failure and being stripped of his immortality, Saturn showed great fear at the thought of death, resorting to pleading to his master, Imu for mercy.
Powers and Abilities[]
To the public, Saturn commands the highest authority over the World Government, secretly surpassed only by Imu. As such, he, and the other Five Elders basically rule the world and can act with complete and total impunity to do anything they wish. In spite of fear towards death, Saturn has a strong will, as he retained conscious from Joy Boy's Conqueror's Haki that was powerful enough to knock out every vice admiral present on Egghead.
As a scientist, Saturn conduct inhumane and illegal experimentations. He used Emeth to have Vegapunk to create an army of Pacifistas. He tries to experiment Ginny in attempt to become a so-called "Holy Wife No. 8" but failure which caused the Sapphire Scales. He experimented his arch-enemy, Jewelry Bonney (when she was a newborn) by transplanting a Devil Fruit, Year-Year Fruit.
Unnamed Zoan-type Devil Fruit[]
Saturn appears to have eaten a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that enables him to turn into a cross between a spider and a bull. In this form, Saturn gain incredible durability as he is completely unfazed from Sabo's Hiken attack. He also can cause a person's head to explode with a glance. The smokey clouds around his body suggests he has managed to achieve task of Awakening. However, his abilities has proven to be inferior to Luffy's own awakening powers as his eye attack didn't do anything on Luffy.
In his beast form, Saturn turned into a giant horned spider. His legs are filled with the venom. According to Sanji, Saturn finally gives up his pretense of being human. However, his attacks are too heavy when Luffy easily dodged his attack while his size is being too big and slow against his enemies who has any source of speed. His attacks still too slow against Luffy (while in Giant Form) due to his Observation Haki. He can spit explosive venom but it can be reflected back at Saturn when Luffy baseballed the explosive venom towards Saturn, Warcury and Ju Peter.
Strangely, Saturn does not seem to have the vulnerability to sea water that most Devil Fruit users have, as one of Luffy's attacks threw him into the sea, an act that did not seem to negate his powers nor harm him.
With his death, it has returned to circulation.
Haki[]
Saturn is shown to have the ability to use Haki and have mastery over two forms of Haki such as Observation Haki and Conquerors Haki. He is able to use his Conquerors Haki to knock out the den-den mushi without needing to physically touch it and he is capable of using his Observation Haki to help him locate his targets to attack them.
Other Powers[]
During the Egghead Saga, it is revealed Saturn and the five elders have strange supernatural abilities such as teleportation (using strange portals, the portal being a pentagrams, suggesting actual sorcery, something previously unknown in this series), cause fear in enemies (his mere presence on Egghead Island causing everyone present to feel a cold sense of dread), repel and pin foes with some sort of telekinesis (or maybe gravity control), and apparent immortality, being able to recover from any kind of injury immediately. However, their powers have proven to be countered by intense Haki, which sent most the Elders back to where they teleported from and undid their transformations.
Saturn is also immune to the effects of age-age fruit, as Bonney could not alter his age. Furthermore, he has lived for more than 200 years and still have the same appearance back then and at God Valley.
These powers seemed to be linked to his master Imu, who has demonstrated the ability to negate Saturn's immortality, and kill him from a great distance just by willing it.
Biography[]
Past[]
Saturn has been alive for at least two hundred years, being present when Emet ran amuck in Mary Geoise. After the machine was subdued, a group of scientists were given orders by Imu to destroy it but Saturn opted not to scrap it but research it for the intention of repurposing it to serve the World Government in the future. He secretly ordered the scientists to research it, while assuring protection so it would not be discovered.
Thirty-eight years ago, he was present on God Valley during the Native Hunting competition. He was alerted of Kuma's attempted escape, personally confronting him when the Rocks and Roger Pirates were engaging the Marines. He incapacitated the child and told him, his people the Buccaneers were destined to be slaves and was irate by the boy declaring he would be like Nika and save many people. Saturn was presumably unable to stop Kuma, as the latter escaped the island with five hundred people.
Ohara Incident[]
Saturn was present during the time when the elders were communicating to the Ohara scientists via Cipher Pol agents about studying the Void Century. As the elders told them to cease what they were doing, the scientists refused leading the elders to have them killed in response.
Spandam's Offer[]
At one point, the elders were seen speaking to Spandam. Spandam proposed an idea of finding the ancient weapons, to which Saturn and the other elders allowed him to look for the weapons.
Experiments on Ginny and Bonney[]
After Ginny, Kuma's childhood friend, was kidnapped and sent to the Celestial Dragons, Saturn conducted experiments on her and her daughter, Jewelry Bonney. The experiments led to the exposure to the Sapphire Scales which led to Ginny's illness and the disease being spread to her daughter. Saturn also conducted experiments on Bonney which led to Bonney gaining the powers that she currently have. After some time, Ginny was kicked out of the Holy Land and soon died while Kuma took care of Bonney until her illness was discovered.
Deal With Kuma[]
When Saturn was informed that Kuma was looking for a cure to treat Bonney of the Sapphire Scales, Saturn proposed that Kuma join the Seven Warlords since Portgas D. Ace was behind defeating a previous member and then be experimented on in order to become a human weapon for the World Government. Saturn proposed that Kuma would have to give up his mind completely. Vegapunk was outraged at the condition of Saturn's deal while Saturn told Vegapunk that it was necessary since Kuma had a bounty and was active in the Revolutionary Army. Saturn also proposed that Kuma never meet Bonney at any given point when he is a Warlord or she would be made into a slave. Kuma agreeds to Saturn's deal and told him as long as Bonney was placed in a safe place in Sorbet Kingdom he will not visit her.
Sky Island Saga[]
Saturn is first seen with the other elders speaking about recent events in the world including Crocodile's defeat to Monkey D. Luffy in Alabasta. Upset over Crocodile's defeat, the elders have him stripped of his warlord status and he was sent to Impel Down. At the same time, the elders kept a close eye on Monkey D. Luffy.
Water 7 Saga[]
Saturn is seen with the elders as they were discussing admiral Aokiji. They are seen commenting on Aokiji not taking his position as a marine admiral seriously when they hear he was not at his assigned post. Saturn comments that Aokiji is probably sight-seeing.
After the events of the Straw Hat Pirates invading Ennies Lobby to save Franky and Robin from CP9, Saturn along with the other elders were shock to hear that two of the four emperors, Whitebeard and Shanks, made contact with one another in the New World.
Summit War Saga[]
Due to the deal that Saturn made with Kuma, Dr. Vegapunk completed his augmentation on Kuma which led to Kuma becoming a mindless soldier for the World Goverment with his personality and humanity removed.
After the events of the Summit War in Marineford, Saturn is seen speaking with the other elders about the important figures who participated in the war. Saturn comments on Luffy being in the news as the other elders speak about important figures like Jinbe being against them and the balance of the three great powers. Saturn comments on Blackbeard's actions in the New World. The elders speak about the "D" clan among other things that occurred after the war.
Dressrosa Saga[]
During the events of the Straw Hat Pirates arrival in Dressrosa, an angry Akainu confronts Saturn and the other elders about Doflamingo's actions by using CP0 and the elder's actions in this situation. Saturn and the elders tell Akainu to not speak back to them in an angry tone while reminding Akainu about how its his fault they lost Aokiji to the Blackbeard Pirates. The elders were later informed about Doflamingo's defeat by Monkey D. Luffy in Dressrosa. Saturn is shown to be visibly irritated when hearing the news along with the other elders and Akainu.
Whole Cake Island Saga[]
During the Levely, Saturn is seen with the other elders as Shanks walks into the room in a cloak. The elders took notice of him as Shanks shares important information with them. After their meeting with Shanks, Saturn and the other elders walk to empty throne room to kneel before Imu as they ask them what light needs to be exterminated from history.
Wano Saga[]
Saturn and the elders have a conversation with King Nefertari Cobra in the Empty Throne Room for his questions of his ancestor Queen Nefertari Lili's reason for refusing to become a Celestial Dragon and what is the meaning of the surname "D.". During the conversation, Imu appears to the surprise of the elders and sits on the empty throne. Imu leads the discussion with Cobra. Saturn along with the other elders draw their weapons as one member inform Cobra that he will not be leaving the room alive since he saw Imu. Upon the revelation of Cobra and Lili bearing the D., Imu attacks Cobra which prompts Sabo to get out of hiding to attack the five elders and attempting to attack Imu. Saturn and his fellow elders are seemingly unfazed by Sabo's fire fist attack and they all transform into mysterious creatures. As Imu descended the throne to come after Sabo and Cobra, they all began attacking both men and attempted to kill them. During the fight, Sabo is critically injured and Cobra tells Sabo to inform Luffy and Vivi about the D. clan. Imu and the elders murdered Cobra as Sabo escaped. They also noticed that Wapol witnessed the entire scene in the Empty Throne room. The Elders and Imu framed Sabo as Cobra's murderer during the Levely and also informed the other nobles that Wapol will not be joining the remainder of the Levely.
During the events of Wano as the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance fight against the Beasts Pirates, Big Mom, and Orochi's army, Saturn is seen among the other elders discussing issues with this year's Levely and how they should use their time now to try and kill Nico Robin during the raid in Wano. They comment on Kaido and Big Mom's alliance and a specific devil fruit. The elders instruct Guernica on assassinating Luffy during his fight with Kaido which leads to an angry Kaido attacking Guernica for interfering with the fight. Saturn and the other elders talk about the Gum Gum Fruit and how it is also an ancient Zoan devil fruit which they have failed to acquired for centuries. After Big Mom's and Kaido's defeat, Saturn talks about how their defeat will be hard to cover up along with Luffy's ascension to Nika during the raid. They speak about Wano and capturing Nico Robin. The elders were shown to be upset that the picture of Luffy in his gear 5th form appears on the bounty poster and wanted his bounty poster to be reprinted to remove his "D" initial only for "Big News" Morgans to refused the elders' demand.
Final Saga[]
After the events of Wano, Saturn and the elders comment on Imu destroying Lulusia Kingdom where Sabo was reported to be hiding.
Due to issues with Dr. Vegapunk and World Government officials, Saturn accompanies Kizaru as they head to Egghead Island. Kizaru asks Saturn if he met with Vegapunk to which he responds that he met him before. During the battle between Luffy and Kizaru, the arrival of Saturn is broadcasted to all Marines in the area with the warning to avert their gaze away from him at all cost, when a mysterious pentagram with the number 5 engraved on it appears on the floor Luffy, Kizaru, Zoro, Lucci and Jinbe remark on a powerful presence felt on the island, just then Saturn appears from the pentagram in front of the team escorting Vegapunk off the island, after killing a marine who made eye contact with him by exploding his head Bonney rushes at him with a sword and impales him.
He grabbed Bonney at her throat and remove the sword that impaled in order to regenerate himself. He tries to stomp Luffy but saved by Franky. Saturn ordered the Marines to kill Bonney by targeting her head. Bonney tries to escape his grip but she is unable due to the side-effects of her experiments. Seeing Luffy is eating to regain his strength, who secretly was Kizaru giving food to Luffy, Saturn order the Marines to stop him but suddenly Kuma arrived at Egghead. While the Marines were thrashed by Kuma, Saturn has no choice but to stomp on Bonney only for Kuma save Bonney and throwing his fist at Saturn.
Before getting punched, Saturn demanded Vegapunk to explain why Kuma is still alive when the self-destruct mechanism is not working. Kuma punched Saturn in the face and sent him flying towards the city. Saturn lost his horn and right arm. He questioned Vegapunk the answer which the greatest scientist revealed it is the power of love when Vegapunk never install the self-destruct mechanism in Kuma. After regenerating his injuries, Saturn decided to kill Vegapunk and Kuma when they are no longer any use to them. However, He was blocked by Sanji and shot by Franky's "Radical Beam". Saturn ordered to Buster Call to destroy Egghead when it had enemies he perceives to be a great threat to the World Government like Vegapunk who betrayed the government, the last survivor of the race that should have been extinct Kuma and lastly the pirate who awakened the power of the Ancient Sun God Nika, Luffy.
Saturn orders the Pacifistas to kill Bonney, Kuma and Vegapunk. However, Bonney ordered to Pacifista to help her escape and attacking the Marines due to Vegapunk installed Bonney's name as a highest rank of the Authority Chips. Saturn then impaled Vegapunk with his leg and ordered Kizaru to kill everyone but only Luffy interfered, much to Saturn's rage. Saturn declared to Luffy and his friends that they're all going to die, but Luffy denied his beliefs. Saturn attacked Luffy with his eye attack, but it didn't do much on him. Saturn was beaten up by Luffy's Dawn Gatling as well sending the Elder flying from Luffy's devastated punch. Saturn soon recovers from his injuries by Luffy. He was soon confronted by Van Augur and Catarina Devon (who finished their mission). He is aware of Teach's lineage. Saturn demanded what is Blackbeard's intention which Augur and Devon revealed to take over the world. Saturn tries to attack them but were teleported by Augur's powers.
Saturn soon returned to confront Luffy, Sanji and Vegapunk in his full animal form. He tries to attack Luffy, but he did not land a single strike due to his size is too big when Luffy easily dodged Saturn while the Elder is too slow. When Vegapunk was struck by Kizaru, Luffy turned into a giant and grabbed both Saturn and Kizaru at the same time. As Vegapunk's video message is broadcasted, Saturn wonders what Vegapunk plans to say. Saturn and Kizaru attacks Luffy but he dodge both of their attacks while the latter attacks both of them with his new attack called Gomu Gomu no Dawn Cymbal which flattened both Saturn and Kizaru. Luffy tossed them both away but Saturn returned to Luffy's location to launch another attack against him. Saturn telepathically communicates with the other elders and tells them that he thinks Vegapunk is dead. The elders become increasingly concerned with Vegapunk's video message. Saturn prepares the summoning of the four elders onto Egghead Island. As the other four elders appear on the island, Saturn along with Warcury and Ju Peter tries to kill Luffy but soon was confronted by Dorry and Brogy. Saturn and Warcury are surprised to see giants appear. When Saturn and Warcury overhear them talk about escaping the island, Warcury lets out a giant scream and Conqueror's Haki blast. As Warcury asks them who Luffy is, the giants said that he is a friend of theirs before knocking him back to which Saturn spits venom at them. Luffy takes a tree, carves it into a baseball bat, paints it, puts on a baseball helmet, and knocks back Saturn's attack towards him and the other elders which caused a couple explosions. Despite taking the explosions at point-blank range, Saturn, Warcury, and Ju Peter begin to recover from the attack as Luffy, Dorry, and Brogy escape. While Warcury and Ju Peter handle Luffy and the Giant captains, Saturn climbs up the Punk Records to stop the broadcast but was too late.
He confront the Weak Trio along with both Brook and Robin (who he meets the first time after Akainu fails to kill her in the past). He attempted to kill Robin but was protected by her crewmates. When Mars asking they should just destroy the power plant, Saturn and Warcury denied it when they cannot risk their military power and their ability to create another "Mother Flame". After falling to kill Robin, Saturn moved into the Punk Records and discovered the "Mother Flame". He smashed the Den Den Mushi but still is a decoy. He was contacted by York thinking the real Den Den Mushi is inside of the Iron Giant. After seemingly defeat Emet, Saturn turn his attention of stopping Luffy, Bonney and the others from getting away. But the broadcast is still active due to its circuits being intact. Saturn later jump on the Giant Warrior Pirates' ship in his last attempt to kill both Bonney and Kuma, persistently thinking they would not escape from him. As he attempts to attack them, Bonney yells at him for all the horrible things he has done to her parents, Kuma and Ginny. Bonney transforms into her Nika form alongside Luffy and the two attack him with Bonney punching Saturn in the face and Luffy unleashing a barrage of punches at him. The attack breaks pieces of Saturn's body a part which also causes him to fall off the ship and into the ocean. He soon regenerated and attempting to stop Luffy and his allies from getting away. However, he and his fellow Elders were blown away by Emet using Joy Boy's Conqueror's Haki, reverting them to their original form. Saturn (unlike the other Elders who were sent back to Mary Geoise) remained in Egghead to confront Emet as Luffy and his allies successfully escaped from Egghead.
Sometime later after the events of Egghead, he heads back to one of the Marine ships. Saturn explains to the Vice Admirals that obtaining York, Punk Records the Mother Flame was a success however what their greatest failure was the broadcast of Vegapunk's message to the world. The Vice Admirals apologize in front of Saturn and suggest pursuing the Straw Hats to Elbaf, however Saturn's main concern is not Elbaf telling the Vice Admirals to forget it. Saturn goes on to explain that Emet surfacing and aiding the Straw Hats to escape is quite ironic. He recalls a meeting 200 years ago in Marijoa after Emet's rampage with some scientists where he informed them to study the robot since he feels that it will be a huge asset to the military force of the World Government. In the present day, Saturn thinks to himself how Emet remained dormant for 200 years and yet it clearly moved to protect Luffy. When Vice Admiral Doberman speaks to Saturn regarding Vegapunk's message that he said allowing his message to be broadcast was a "failure", he questions if there is some truth behind what Vegapunk was saying, Saturn responds by blowing Doberman away, critically wounding him.
Death[]
In the Holy land Marijoa, Saint Figarland Garling informs the remaining elders that he has been chosen to replace Saturn. Saturn suddenly screams as black flames seems to be covering his body, the Vice Admirals are shocked, and they call for a medic. As the Marines panic at Saturn's body rapidly aging and evaporating, Saturn telepathically communicates with Imu to have mercy, but his master telepathically tells Saturn that because of him, Joy Boy was behind the escape, and he allowed it. Before Saturn can say anything more, his body explodes and all that is left is his skeleton, surprising the Vice Admirals.
In the end, while he sees humanity as insects, he dies in a way much like the "insects" he sees and stomp on. With his death, the death of Ginny, Kuma's parents; Ohara and countless of his victims as well as Kuma and Bonney's sufferings are avenged.

Trivia[]
- Like his other fellow Five Elders, Jaygarcia Saturn's name is taken from Saturn, one of the planets of the Solar System.
- In Japanese, Saturn’s name is written as サターン, similar to Satan.
- Jaygarcia's occupation is based on Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Ministry of Defense merged into one.
- Jaygarcia Saturn first appears in the manga in chapter 233 along with the four other elders. However, his name is not revealed until the events of the Egghead Island Arc in chapter 1073. This makes it 840 chapters since his first appearance in the story and his name reveal. In addition, chapter 233 was officially released June 10, 2002 whereas chapter 1073 was officially released January 30, 2023, making it more than 20 years since he first appeared and since his name is revealed.
- Jaygarcia Saturn is the first of the Five Elders to have his name revealed. Ironically he is also the first to die.
- His surname may be based on the musician Jerry Garcia of the band Grateful Dead, who looks similar to the character.
- Saturn's appearance may be inspired by the Italian general and patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of Italy's "fathers of the fatherland". Saturn's beard, hat, and walking cane clutched with both hands are all similar to Galibaldi's. Ironically, Saturn was a tyrannical scientist who worked for a empire enforcing slavery, while Garbaldi deeply despised the concept of slavery, to the point he refused to lead the Union Army during the American Civil War, as he felt that president Abraham Lincoln wasn't committed to the concept of abolition enough for his liking.
- His Zoan-type transformation is based on the yōkai, Ushi-oni, possessing the body of a spider and the head of a bull. His ability to kill those that make eye contact with him also appears to be similar to how the Ushi-Oni kills those around its perimeter.
