Tom Mahout is the secondary antagonist of Stephen King's 1992 psychological horror novel Gerald's Game, and its 2017 film adaptation.
He is the sexually abusive father of the story's main protagonist, Jessie Burlingame. Although he is only depicted through hallucinations and flashbacks, he is one of the story's most significant antagonists, being the root of all of Jessie's problems.
Tom is a manipulative pervert who used Jessie like an object throughout the duration of her childhood. After taking her on a vacation to watch the eclipse, Tom would manipulate her while sitting on a bench to bounce on his knee while he unzipped his pants and masturbated. Later, he again manipulated her into keeping it a secret using reverse psychology, making her believe that he wanted to come clean about everything although it would cause problems in his and her mother's marriage. Not wanting the two to get a divorce, Jessie begged him not to tell her, and so Tom said that they would try it Jessie's way, successfully having convinced her that not telling her mother was her idea.
Biography[]
Tom is first depicted in a flashback going on a vacation with his family to watch the eclipse. After arguing with his wife about her suspicions of his and Jessie's inappropriate relations, the scene cuts to him and Jessie outside watching the eclipse. He begins to mention that he misses the days where she would bounce on his knee, and so she got on his knee and watched the eclipse with her camera while he bounced her. While this was going on, he began to unzip his pants, and although Jessie began to protest, he insisted that she continue to watch regardless. He masturbated in front of his daughter, who simply sat there, frozen.
Later on, while Jessie began to consider telling her mother, Tom came into the room and talked about what happened. He told Jessie that he determined that the two of them should come clean, although it would cause problems in his marriage. Not wanting her parents to fight or get a divorce, Jessie insisted that they not tell her mother. Tom then stood up and agreed, saying that they would try it "Jessie's way". Later on, he is seen during dinnertime, where Jessie crushed her glass after her mother asked how her day went.
Tom's face was seen again on the Moonlight Man's face at the end of the story, symbolizing one of Jessie's past problems.
Trivia[]
Jessie's father would often refer to her as "Mouse", which was a nickname brought up by the story's other two antagonists, Gerald Burlingame and the Moonlight Man.
It is unknown what happened to Tom afterwards, as he only appears in flashbacks. It is possible however that he could have had suffered the same fate as Gerald had, as Jessie hallucinates him, along with Gerald, while confronting the Moonlight Man at the end of the story.
