~ Description of Qhored Hoare. |
King Qhored I Hoare, known as Qhored the Cruel, is a supporting character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He was one of the most successful and greatest High Kings of the Iron Islands. While most accounts state that he is associated with House Hoare, other sources claim that he originated from House Greyiron or House Blacktyde.
Personality[]
King Qhored was a proud and ambitious man who claimed that his writ ran "wherever men can smell salt water or hear the crash of waves." He displayed a lot of cruelty, such as when he killed Bernarr's sons with his own hands just as a tribute to his being delayed.
Biography[]
In his youth, Qhored Hoare captured and sacked Oldtown, kidnapping thousands of women to turn them into salt wives. At the age of thirty, he defeated the Lords of the Trident and their ruling monarch, King Bernard II Justman. Qhored then took the king's three sons as hostages but killed them three years later by cutting out their hearts as their father was late with his tribute.
In grief over the loss of his sons, King Bernard waged war on Qhored Hoare with his army in an attempt to exact vengeance but ended up facing defeat, and their hopes of exacting revenge were crushed. Qhored then drowned King Bernard as a sacrifice to the Drowned God, leaving House Justman extinct and bringing the Riverlands to a century of chaos.
During Qhored's rule as king, the ironborn were at the peak of their power, during which they significantly spread their influence and expanded their territory along the Sunset Sea to the Arbor and to Bear Island. The iroborn rightfully claimed that the writs of their king ran whenever men would smell salt water or hear the waves crash. This installed fear on many men, in which they abandoned the shores so that they could avoid Qhored and his men, while others, who remained, were forced to pay tribute.
The Kingdom of the Reach, which was ruled by House Gardener, gave him the nickname "Qhored the Cruel" in response to his cruelty and atrocities. After ruling for seventy-five years, King Qhored died at the age of ninety.
