~ Varys mentioning Daemon III Blackfyre. |
Prince Daemon Blackfyre, disputably Daemon III Blackfyre, is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire series. He is the eldest son of Haegon I Blackfyre, the nephew of Daemon II Blackfyre and Aegor "Bittersteel" Rivers. Daemon is also a grandson of Daemon I Blackfyre, the founder of House Blackfyre.
Like his grandfather and father, Daemon III is a Blackfyre pretender who launched the Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion in an attempt to overthrow House Targaryen and claim the Iron Throne, but failed, and he was slain by Ser Duncan the Tall.
Biography[]
Daemon was born in exile in or after 202 AC to his father Haegon I Blackfyre, somewhere in the lands of the Free Cities in Essos, possibly Tyrosh. Nothing is known of his early life. He had at least one or several younger brothers. After his father was killed in the aftermath of the Third Blackfyre Rebellion, Bittersteel was taken captive. The latter's half-brother, Brynden "Bloodraven" Rivers, and Prince Aerion Targaryen urged the weak King Aerys I Targaryen to execute Bittersteel, since he is found guilty of high treason. However, King Aerys, who was not interested in ruling, foolishly spares Bittersteel's life and ordered that he be sent to the Wall to join the Night's Watch.
After Bittersteel escaped back to Tyrosh with the help of Blackfyre supporters, he crowns Haegon's son Daemon as Daemon III Blackfyre. A few years later, during the Great Council of 233 AC, Daemon's uncle, Prince Aenys Blackfyre, peacefully tried to make his claim by traveling to King's Landing himself to attend the great council, but was treacherously killed by Bloodraven, which angered House Blackfyre and their supporters in exile.
Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion[]
As a six-year long winter is about to end, Daemon III decided to make the crossing, and he, Bittersteel and the Golden Company crossed the Narrow Sea and landed in the Crownlands at Massey's Hook. Though Daemon hoped that a few victories would win many Westerosi lords to his side, however, this proved to be in vain, as his family's cause had already faded away; As most Westerosi had now lost faith that House Blackfyre would take the Iron Throne, they see the Blackfyre host as nothing but an army of foreigners who carry old and tattered banners of a failed usurper who died forty years ago. As a result, Daemon never received any Westerosi support minus House Yronwood, which was why his invasion didn't spread far beyond the Stormlands.
Together with his army, alongside his friend Ser Duncan the Tall, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, King Aegon V Targaryen rode out with his three sons, Princes Duncan, Jaehaerys, and Daeron, alongside House Lannister to meet the Blackfyre army in battle. During the Battle of Wendwater Bridge, House Blackfyre was defeated and Daemon III Blackfyre was slain by Duncan the Tall while Bittersteel escaped back to Essos, where he died a few years later.
Legacy[]
Much later, following the Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion, Maelys Blackfyre, the last of the Blackfyre male line, would assume control over the Golden Company and formed an alliance with a group of pirates, merchants and other sellswords known as the Band of Nine. Following in the footsteps of Daemon III Blackfyre alongside the previous Blackfyre pretenders, Maelys sought to take over Westeros and claim the Iron Throne for himself. But before he could even invade Westeros, however, he and the Band of Nine were met by a great army composed of most of the Great Houses of Westeros at the Stepstones, and Maelys was slain in battle by Ser Barristan Selmy, bringing House Blackfyre's goal of claiming the Iron Throne to an end.
Trivia[]
- Daemon III Blackfyre, is the last Blackfyre pretender to be crowned king by Bittersteel, as the latter would die a few years later after the Fourth Blackfyre Rebellion, making him unable to crown Maelys the Monstrous.
- In the ASOIAF series, Daemon continued to use the normal House Blackfyre sigil, however, in Game of Thrones, the color of the background of his sigil appears to now be yellow instead of the traditional red.
