Only two things are known for sure about the mysterious Pyro: he sets things on fire and he doesn't speak. In fact, only the part about setting things on fire is undisputed. Some believe his occasional rasping wheeze may be an attempt to communicate through a mouth obstructed by a filter and attached to lungs ravaged by constant exposure to his asbestos-lined suit. Either way, he's a fearsome, inscrutable, on-fire Frankenstein of a man - if he even is a man.
~ Official description of the Pyro.
I fear no man, but that... thing... it scares me.
~ The Heavy revealing his fear of the Pyro.
No, I... I ain't... I ain't talking about that freak, alright? He's not here, is she? How do I get this fucking thing off?!
~ The Scout panicking out of fear that the Pyro might be in the same room as him.
One shudders to imagine what inhuman thoughts lie behind that mask... what dreams of chronic and sustained cruelty...
~ The Spy's thoughts about his psychotic "ally".

The Pyro is one of the main protagonists from the 2007 video game Team Fortress 2, serving as one of the nine playable classes.

They are a mysterious, mumbling, masked pyromaniac wielding a flamethrower. However, despite being a mercenary and an having an affinity for fire, the Pyro is actually unaware of the death and destruction they are spreading; the Pyro sees their own weapons as innocent items such as lollipops, bubble blowers and rainbow throwers when, in reality, they are deadly axes, flare guns and flamethrowers. They believe that they are spreading color and happiness, but are actually causing mass destruction and bloodshed.

Unlike all the other classes, which have an established place of origin, with the inclusion of some classes having their past and real names revealed, the Pyro's true appearance, real name, location of origin and gender are never revealed. The Pyro's mystery is their most prominent trait, sparking many debates and theories from fans.

They were voiced by Dennis Bateman, who also voices the Spy in the same game.

Overview[]

The Pyro specializes in fighting enemies at close range using a homemade Flamethrower. Enemies set on fire suffer from afterburn and take additional damage-over-time, allowing the Pyro to excel at hit-and-run tactics. Due to the Flamethrower's short-range, the Pyro is weaker at longer ranges and relies heavily on ambushing, taking alternate routes to catch opponents off-guard. The Pyro wears an asbestos-lined suit that provides protection from the afterburn from enemy Pyros.

According to "Meet the Pyro", the Pyro imagines that they are in a marvelous and happy world known as "Pyroland" where their 'enemies' are cheerful, chubby cherubs.

Although categorized as an offensive class, the Pyro brings a few sources of utility to the battlefield. The Pyro's compression blast, for example, can reflect enemy projectiles, extinguish burning teammates, and forcibly reposition any enemy, even one under the effects of an ÜberCharge. With high health and average movement speed, the Pyro is devastating against any class in close combat.

Because enemies hit by fire are visibly ignited, the Pyro is the best class for "Spy-checking", as even a small puff of flame can nullify the Spy's Cloak and disguise. Additionally, the Pyro can use the Homewrecker/Neon Annihilator to protect an Engineer's buildings from enemy Spies or use the Detonator to jump to normally unreachable places.

Biography[]

The Pyro was hired as a mercenary for either RED or BLU during the summer of 1968 as the Gravel War raged on. As revealed in the Meet the Pyro video, some of the RED mercenaries were creeped out by the Pyro, due to the latter's status as a lunatic and a psycho, with the Scout even fearing of its presence while the Spy wondered on what is hidden beneath the Pyro's mask. In 1971, after Redmond Mann and Blutarch Mann, the employers of the aforementioned rival companies, were killed by their younger brother Gray Mann, who unleashed an army of robots destroy Mann Co. facilities worldwide along with any products made by the companies, Pyro and it's team were rehired in the comic In a Fate Worse Than Chess by Saxton Hale so that they could defend the Mann Co. facilities from the robots. The Pyro was successful in fending off the robot attacks with the rest of the Team Fortress 2 Mercenaries.

A year later in 1972, during the events of the Ring of Fired comic, after Gray Mann successfully took over Mann Co. from Saxton, thanks to his daughter, Olivia, the Pyro was fired along with its team. After losing its job, it, at some point, became the CEO of a successful engineering company, despite his psychotic nature and his inability to speak properly. Six months later, Miss Pauling, together with the Soldier, managed to track the Pyro and get its attention, causing the latter to abandon its status as a CEO and rejoin the team.

Other media[]

The Pyro appears in a free DLC as a hireable henchman in the stimulation game Evil Genius 2: World Domination.

Personality[]

Thanks to the fact that this entity wears a gas mask and a fire-retardant suit, little is known about this individual, save for the fact that they have a strange liking of fire at first glance.

According to "Meet the Pyro", in combat, the Pyro imagines that they are in a world dubbed "Pyroland", a childish utopia where its 'enemies' are cheerful, chubby cherubs that are always happy. Also, its weapons take on innocent, unsuspecting forms, with its flamethrower resembling a "rainblower", the Scorch Shot taking on the appearance of a bubble blower, and the fire axe taking the shape of a giant lollipop. Due to their delusional behavior, the Pyro almost certainly suffers from schizophrenia, a mental illness that makes this entity fail to realize what is real and what is not.

Because of their psychotic persona and the enigma surrounding them, this makes the Pyro feared by their enemies. This even extends towards some of the Pyro's teammates, being able to strike terror into the RED Heavy, despite his fearlessness.

Trivia[]

  • There is an ongoing debate about the Pyro's gender, since their face is always concealed and voice always muffled, as well as their suit being shapeless. Valve has acknowledged this debate with things such as the woman's purse in the locker room, toilets dedicated to the class of Pyro, and a lack of reference to gender in dialogue. The Pyro is also 5' 9", which is tall for a real-life adult woman, but makes them the second-shortest mercenary.
    • In an analysis done by Matthew Patrick of the YouTube channel Game Theory, the Pyro's bodily shape, limb and digit length, height, and weight all suggest that the Pyro is a homosexual male.
    • However, the original Pyro from Team Fortress Classic is confirmed to be female.
  • In the comic Ring of Fired, the Pyro has become a CEO of a successful company after Mann Co. (then taken over by Gray Mann) fired them and the rest of the mercenaries.
  • The Pyro seems to suffer from pyromania as they have a morbid love for playing with fire and burning things with their flamethrower.
  • Their hallucinations and distorted vision are probably caused by the suit worn by the Pyro. Schizophrenia in this case it is likely to exist, but this illness comes and goes in phases and during psychotic episodes, the patient usually still understands the parts of Schizophrenia.
  • In Left 4 Dead 2, the Pyro's BLU counterpart appears as an easter egg, where it is the mascot of the Pyro's Hamburgers food brand.
  • While the BLU Pyro (alongside Saxon Hale) is a playable in Super Time Force, the RED Pyro is a playable character in the PC version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
