It is I, your employer, Blutarch Mann. From beyond the grave! I've given you thick-skulled slugs one thing to do for a hundred years now: Shoot each other! Now I've given you something even easier to do: Push my brother to Hell!
~ Blutarch Mann.

Blutarch Mann is one of two secondary antagonists (alongside his brother Redmond Mann) of Team Fortress 2.

He is the brother of Redmond Mann and Gray Mann, one of the sons of Zepheniah Mann, and the one who hired the BLU team of mercenaries. Blutarch used a life extender machine in an attempt to outlive his twin brother, who also did the same, which caused their conflict with each other to continue on for a century. Blutarch was eventually killed by his younger brother Gray, who also killed Redmond. With Blutarch and his brother now dead, and are now ghosts, they made one final attempt to win their father's land by sending one another to Hell.

He is voiced by Nolan North, who also voices his twin brother Redmond Mann and the wizard Merasmus in Team Fortress 2, Penguin in Batman Arkham series and Modi in God of War (2018).

Biography[]

Blutarch Mann, together with his brother Redmond and their youngest brother Gray, was born on September 2, 1822 to rich Englishman Zephaniah Mann and his wife Bette Mann. The latter died after giving birth to her three sons. Upon seeing Blutarch and Redmond, Zephaniah acknowledged that their perfectly normal, healthy, and strong as he describes them as "strapping, alert, and handsome". After Gray Mann was abducted by an eagle, which was during the Great Eagle Scourge of 1822, Blutarch and his brother would grow up not knowing of the existence of their third brother. Ever since the two were born, they would alway fight with each other. In their adulthood, Blutarch, now an adult, along with Redmond, would convince their father to purchase large amounts of land in New Mexico so that they can expand the family business. When Blutarch, Redmond, and their father, arrived at the Badlands, which is where their newly-purchased land is, it soon turns out to be nothing but a useless desert, and Zephaniah never forgave Blutarch and Redmond for it, as he ended up losing nearly all of the family fortune.

Fight over land[]

In 1850, Blutarch and his brother were present at their father's funeral, after he died from all sorts of illnesses, mainly due to the trip to the Badlands. The two brothers, listened at the lawyer read Zephaniah's last will and document; according to the document, Both Blutarch and Redmond would inherit the land their father had bought and wasted nearly a fortune on, which would serve as punishment and for them to fight for the rest of their life.

In an attempt to claim the land, Blutarch assembled a team of mercenaries, which consisted of historical people such as President Abraham Lincoln, however, Redmond also did the same thing. As a result, during the ensuing Gravel War, the mercenary teams of both brothers ended up fighting each other to a stalemate. A few years later, in August 21, 1861, Blutarch and Redmond sold their gravel mine to Australian frontiersman Barnabus Hale, who used to serve as an aide and tracker for their father, who gave him ownership of the family company Zephaniah & Sons Munitions Concern.

Becoming immortal[]

The war continued on for forty years. In 1890, Blutarch, now in his old age along with his brother, was nearing death, due to natural causes. Calling in a professional engineer/inventor named Radigan Conagher, who is the grandfather of the Engineer, he commissioned him to construct a machine that would allow him to achieve immortality, therefore out living his brother. Radigan agreed to create Blutarch that machine, which would be called the Life Extender Machine. Unbeknownst, Redmond, however, Radigan was convinced by a mysterious woman, who paid him with a bar of Australium, to also make a life extender machine for Redmond Mann.

Because of that, the Gravel War is once again locked in a stalemate, as both of the Mann brothers are now immortal thanks to their life extender Machines.

Lose Cannon[]

A century later in 1968, Blutarch discovered that his life extender machine is malfunctioning, due to Radigan Conager constructing it in an incorrect way. He summons Radigan's grandson Dell Conagher (the Engineer) in order to have him fix the machine. When the Engineer meets him in his office, Blutarch proceeded to reveal Radigan's relationships with the Mann family, which Dell is unaware of, along with his responsibility in building Blutarch's and Redmond's life extender machines. Angered that Radigan didn't make his life extender machine correctly, he explains to the Engineer that the machine is starting to malfunction and that he wants him to fix it. When Dell explains that he doesn't know how the machine works, Blutarch suggested that he access the blueprints of the now-dead Radigan Conagher, Dell reminds him that they are buried with his grandfather, but was left shocked when Blutarch took out the blueprints, which he then placed on his desk. The latter then admits that he had dug up and looted Radigan's grave before stating his failure in trying to decipher the blueprints, which he did for 60 years. Before Blutarch would continue on, he suddenly died, as his life extender machine unexpectedly malfunctioned.

When it began to work again, Blutarch was instantly revived. Grabbing Dell by his shirt, he demanded him to fix his machine before letting go, but only after Dell threatened to break him in half.

In Blood Brothers (set in 1971) he and Redmond decided to end their long war over Gravel and to try and create a clone of themselves to carry on their legacy. The third of the Mann triplets, and their lost brother, Gray Mann appeared and revealed he had organized the meeting, he then told them about who he was and assassinated them.

In Grave Matters (set a few seconds after the previous webcomic), Blutarch has the ghosts of Redmond and Blutarch arguing who died first thus who won the war. They eventually have their opposing teams, RED and BLU, push each other's cart (who is stuffed with their corpses) to Hell, as whoever gets to Hell first is the first to be technically dead and so, whoever gets to Hell first loses. Since this is a never-ending game mode, it is never determined who actually wins the war, as it simply depends on the players.

Personality[]

Blutarch Mann harbors a strong hatred for his twin brother Redmond. While it is unknown on why he hates him, its mostly because he is born to hate him, which is evident that when Blutarch and Redmond are born they immediately glared at each other. While he act hostile towards his brother, he would rarely act calm towards him and to the point where he began to show some care for him, as evident as when he realized that their fighting will cause their family to go extinct and proposed the idea of a truce and a pregnancy in order to get one of them to produce an heir.

This all became forgotten after his long-lost brother Gray Mann reveals himself and kills him and Redmond. Shortly after death and becoming a ghost, Blutarch became full of joy and triumph as he believes himself to have won their conflict, since he outlived his brother, though Redmond argued against this claim, causing the two to start fighting again, only for them to realize that it would go nowhere. Ultimately, Blutarch's mutual hatred for his brother soon extended to the point where he decided to send him to Hell in order to achieve victory.

He is also ungrateful as whenever he wins in Helltower, he will not only send the losing team to hell to mock Redmond but he will also send his winning team to hell as well just so he doesn't have to pay his team, showing that he can also be petty as well.

Trivia[]

  • Like Redmond's name having RED in it, Blutarch had BLU in his name as a reference to his team.
