Villain Overview

I am Heavy Weapons Guy. And this... is my weapon. She weighs 150 kilograms and fires $200 custom-tooled cartridges at 10,000 rounds per minute. It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon... for 12 seconds.
~ Heavy's introductory quote.
Like a hibernating bear, the Heavy appears to be a gentle giant. Also like a bear, confusing his deliberate, sleepy demeanor with gentleness will get you ripped limb from limb. Though he speaks simply and moves with an economy of energy that's often confused with napping, the Heavy isn't dumb; he's not your big friend and he generally wishes that you would just shut up before he has to make you shut up.
~ Official description of the Heavy
I AM BULLETPROOOF!
~ Heavy upon being ubercharged by Medic as well as his most famous quote.

Mikhail or Misha, better known as the Heavy Weapons Guy or just the Heavy is one of the main protagonists from the 2007 video game Team Fortress 2, serving as one of the nine playable classes.

He's depicted as a hulking brute of a man hailing from Russia and the former USSR. He is prone to carrying massive weapons with great firepower such as mini-guns, and when partnered with a Medic, he becomes a walking tank of destruction.

Like all Team Fortress characters, the Heavy can be good and/or evil depending on what team players are in.

The Heavy Weapons Guy is known for insulting opponents and doesn't care who gets in his way, be them men, babies, or "tiny baby-men", they will likely fall to his slow but devastating attacks.

The Heavy is the most iconic and the more comical among the characters of the Team Fortress universe and is even a recurring Garry's Mod star. He also appears in Poker Night at the Invetory.

Heavy was voiced by Gary Schwartz, who also voices the Demoman and Monoculus.

Biography[]

Heavy has been a common character in the Team Fortress 2 comic series, generally being represented as a big, tough man with a good heart. Details of his past are revealed in the comics Meet the Director and A Cold day in Hell; ever since his father was killed for being a counter-revolutionist in 1941, he and his family were deported to a gulag in northern Siberia where they lived for three months until the prison guards there are unexpectedly tortured to death and all the prisoners escaped. After escaping the Gulag, the Heavy and his family hid in the Siberian Mountains where they made it their home. Heavy and his sisters (Yana, Bronislava, and Zhanna) would usually go out and hunt for food, usually bear meat.

The Heavy is very close to his family, visiting them once a month, and would protect his mother and three younger sisters from Russian soldiers, who are pursuing them ever since they escaped. Currently in the comics, Heavy, his mother, and three sisters are traveling around the world looking for the Sniper, Medic, and Engineer. He also cares for his team's Medic, as shown as he was enraged when Classic Heavy briefly killed him.

Having received orders from Miss Pauling, Heavy teamed up with Scout as they head to Ayers Rock to investigate. They soon learned that it was a hidden but now abandoned Australium Gold Mine. Suddenly, the two encountered Saxton Hale and Maggie who were also there looking for the missing Australium. Eventually, the two teamed up to stop Gray Mann.

Personality[]

The Heavy Weapons Guy is known for belittling his opponents and doesn't care who gets in his way - be they men, "babies", or "tiny baby men" - they will likely fall to his slow but devastating attacks. Heavy is the most iconic (as well as the most cruel and bullish) and the most comical of the Team Fortress characters. Having a liking of firepower, he also has a love for his minigun, which he has named "Sasha". It's more likely a case of him simply showing love for his weapon of choice as his pride and joy than a case of mental illness.

Despite being a dark and brutal man, he cares deeply for his family, working hard every day to send money back to them in Russia and is even overprotective of his sisters as he initially refuses to rejoin the mercenaries as he wanted to care for them, and only decided to go when his sisters assured him they would be fine on their own and wanted to see the world as well. Outside of battle, Heavy is also shown to be a quiet, thoughtful man, and in the Valve commissioned SFM short film End of the Line, he is shown to be extraordinarily brave as he attempts to stop a train full of explosives from reaching his team's base using his bare hands and, with Medic's help, eventually succeeds.

Trivia[]

  • The Heavy is currently the only character with two "Meet the Team" videos, one of his own, "Meet the Heavy", and as a practical main character of the video for his lunch, the Sandvich in "Meet the Sandvich".
  • Heavy can be considered the most iconic Team Fortress 2 Character in the game and possibly main protagonist. However, in spite of this, it is commonly understood by the community that he one of the least, if not the least, mained character in the game for his lack of versatility.
  • Heavy's favorite food is sandviches.
  • The Heavy's primary weapon is his minigun that he calls "Sasha". His secondary weapon is a shotgun and his melee weapons are his own fists.
  • Despite his cold appearance, Heavy is very close to his family and cares for them deeply. He also cares for his beloved medic, whom he calls "Doktor".
  • Heavy has become a sympathetic villain in the Team Fortress Comic series, only taking his job to support his mother and his three sisters Zhanna, Yana, and Bronislava. However, he enjoys the job because his beloved medic is with him.
  • Sometimes the Heavy is rumored to be the main protagonist of the game due to being the game's most popular character, but regardless, his more villainous actions still make him an anti-hero and an on & off hero/villain.
  • Most of his guns always use -a suffix since he has a Slavic personality and this was later confirmed when he named his Guns with suffix -a come from his nickname and his sister's last letter in their first names' suffixes.
  • A common internet meme associated with the Heavy is a phrase he says when players press X then 5. This causes the Heavy to say the phrase "Put Dispenser Here" or more infamously "Pootis Spencer Here". It is often shortened to just "Pootis", a term with no true meaning which is now strongly associated with his character.
  • Heavy Weapons Guy has a noticeably darker origin and background history compared to the other Team Fortress 2 mercenaries. This might of been referenced in the videogame Poker Night at the Inventory, in which Heavy tells a sad story about his childhood, void of any humor.
  • TF2 Heavy Easter egg

The Heavy making a cameo in Chef.

In Poker Night at the Inventory, Heavy is shown to have a Kandidat Nauk (the Russian equivalent of a PhD) in Russian literature, and that he uses it "more than you think" in his line of work.
    • The Russian dub of his Meet the Team video shows him being much more eloquent with his speech, implying he is extremely well read but simply can't show it too well in a foreign tongue such as English.
  • The Heavy made two easter eggs in the Left 4 Dead series; In Left 4 Dead 2, he appears as the mascot of the drink brand Heavy Gulp, while appearing as a statue on Louis' work desk in the comic The Sacrifice.
  • In the 2014 film Chef, the Heavy appears as an Easter egg on a wallpaper of Carl Casper's tablet.
