Hirudegarn is the main antagonist of the 1995 film Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.
It is a colossal insectoid-like entity of massive proportions, who was set free from its long confinement by celestial wizards. With an insatiable appetite for destruction, it wreaks havoc upon everything and mercilessly eliminates anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path.
History[]
Hirudegarn is a monster and the main antagonist of the 13th movie Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon.
He terrorized the planet Konats and, in order to stop him, two ocarinas were used to seal him into the bodies of the brothers Tapion and Minotia, and the brothers sealed into music boxes.
However, an alien wizard named Hoi, the last surviving fanatic member of an extraterrestrial culture of evil spellcasters known as the Kashvar, opened Minotia's box, unleashing the lower half of Hirudegarn. Hoy traveled to Earth and employed the help of the Z Warriors in opening the second box. They collected the Dragon Balls and wished the box open, setting Tapion free, and in turn the upper half of Hirudegarn. Hirudegarn was only able to come out when Tapion was asleep, and could only be sealed back in when Tapion played his ocarina. When the Z fighters fought Hirudegarn, none of their attacks hit, as Hirudegarn would just turn to mist the second the hit would have got him.
After Trunks - with Tapion's sword - cut off Hirudegarn's tail, the monster was defeated when Goku went Super Saiyan 3 and used an attack called Dragon Fist, where a Giant Golden Dragon made of energy attacked Hirudegarn, and completely obliterated him.
Personality[]
Hirudegarn doesn't really seem to have sentience, with him being driven purely by instinct; he doesn't appear to hate his victims and enemies, nor does he enjoy killing. His destructive indifferent nature makes him more akin to a natural disaster than knowingly evil.
Similarly, his "rebellion" from Hoi wasn't a conscious decision, rather he merely didn't notice that his conjurer was in the path of his giant foot.
Despite his lack of sentience, there is clarity in that Hirudegarn is aware of anyone that attacks him; his default attitude seems to be one of rage, however, upon being attacked, the anger is concentrated in a sense that indicates he has some awareness of danger.
Powers and Abilities[]
Towering over most characters in the franchise, Hirudegarn stands at an enormous height, in most shots being depicted as bigger than skyscrapers. His eyes typically appear to be black voids, but has red pupils that light up when focusing on something.
With his massive size comes great strength and surprising speed, backed up by the ability to turn into smokey ectoplasm and evade attacks. He can also shoot energy attacks from his mouth as well as breathe fire, and in case he encounters someone stronger than him, he possesses the ability to evolve into an even more powerful form, equipped with wings to fly.
Prior to transforming Hirudegarn was capable of trading blows and gaining the upper hand over several Z Fighters like Super Saiyan Goku, Super Saiyan Vegeta and Gohan before seemingly being overpowered by Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks and emerging into a more powerful form.
In this new form he was powerful enough that with one blow he was able to defeat Gotenks by knocking him to the ground, and easily restrain Gohan when he wasn't paying attention. Even after Goku managed to severely drain his energy by making him feel intense emotion (his weakness), he still did serious damage to Super Saiyan 3 Goku until Goku used the Dragon First technique, killing Hirudegarn once and for all.
According to the Toei website. Super Janemba is stronger than even Hirudegarn, since Hirudegarn was destroyed by Super Saiyan 3 Goku while Super Janemba could beat back Super Saiyan 3 Goku.
Weaknesses[]
The magic of Tapion's sword can slice Hirudegarn's flesh, albeit he is able to repair himself if given time and can dodge it altogether in mist form.
The magical ocarinas can paralyse Hirudegarn, then seal him - or his pieces - within the bodies of the ocarina players; while he can gradually force his way out of their bodies, should they be sealed in magic music boxes, then he is helplessly trapped.
Even without the music box, the person - whose body sealed him - can be killed, which would also result in the imprisoned Hirudegarn's death.
While Hirudegarn is a creature of immense power and regeneration, a stronger power is capable of destroying him.
Forms[]
Form 1[]
Hirudegarn's original form, which was created from a devil statue. After being easily defeated by Gotenks, he transforms into a more powerful state. This form appears for the first time in a video-game in Dragon Ball Heroes, introduced in the eighth mission of the God Mission series (GDM8).
Form 2[]
Hirudegarn is able to morph by evolving inside a cocoon. While in his transformed state, he gains more strength and the ability to take flight thanks to the wings he has in his transformed state. In the movie, Hirudegarn creates his cocoon and morphs after Gotenks attacked him with his Continuous Die Die Missile.

Trivia[]
- Hirudegarn is the second antagonist to have a tail in the middle of his back, the first being Cell.
- Both villains can also consume people with their tails, although in different methods: Cell pierced a victim, melting their flesh to suck up their bodies and thus energy, and when absorbing androids, opened his tail to "swallow" them whole; Hirudegarn's tail tip opened to unleash multiple white tendrils that gripped a victim and swiftly dissolved them to absorb energy.
