Executioner Smough is a major antagonist in the 2011 action role-playing game Dark Souls.
He is the obese and cannibalistic royal executioner of Anor Londo. He is fought as a boss alongside his tag partner Dragonslayer Ornstein.
Biography[]
The royal executioner of Anor Londo, Smough was an antagonistic and cruel individual who enjoyed grinding the bones of his victims and using it as seasoning for his meals. Although he had the strength and skills to compete with the Four Knights of Gwyn, he was rejected for his sadistic and cannibalistic tendencies.
After the gods left Anor Londo, Smough was one of the last living beings in the city, and was paired up with Dragonslayer Ornstein to guard Gwynevere, the Princess of Sunlight, within the cathedral. Paired with Dragonslayer Ornstein to defend Anor Londo in teeth clenched teamwork, he uses his big hammer with deadly precision. If Ornstein is defeated first, Smough crushes his body with his hammer to obtain his lightning powers. The two defeated many undead who attempted to reach Gwynevere but were ultimately defeated by the Chosen Undead.
After Ornstein left in search of the Nameless King, Smough was ironically given the duty to guard the forsaken city despite his status as an executioner and was one of the few remaining to do so. How this happens in relation to the events of Dark Souls is currently unknown.
Although unconfirmed, it is speculated that, since Smough became the last remaining guard on Anor Londo, he finally was granted the knighhood he so desired. And also, unconfirmed as well, given that Smough's armor set is finded in Aldrich's battle room, in can be considered that Smough perished fighting Aldrich to protect Gwyndolin.
Murderous and cannibalistic as he may had been, Smough's loyalty was in the end sincere.

Trivia[]
- After defeating Aldrich in Dark Souls III, Smough's set can be acquired from a corpse found beyond the fog wall. This implies that Smough may have been consumed by the Devourer of Gods, but this may be coincidental since both fights against Smough and Aldrich occur in the same room of Anor Londo.
- In the Japanese version, Smough is named "Sumou". This is because "Smough" is impossible to write in Japanese syllabary.
- The Soul of Smough can be consumed for 12,000 souls, fed to Kingseeker Frampt for one soul, or given to the Giant Blacksmith to ascend a hammer +10 or great hammer +10 into Smough's Hammer.
