The Flexile Sentry is a minor antagonist and optional boss in Dark Souls II.

Appearance[]

The Flexile Sentry is a two bodied reptilian-like creature conjoined at the abdomen, facing apart from each torso. They wear bronze armor around their necks, arms, and leggings; the back facing body also wears a chestplate on its torso, which the front one does not. The front facing torso wields two pairs of curved swords while the back wields two spiked clubs.

Biography[]

When Drangleic was overrun by undead, the Flexile Sentry was tasked to punish, torture, and execute said undead. But over time, the dungeons of the kingdom became overloaded with the accursed. As such, Vendrick tasked the sentry to gather undead without any cells and deport them to a land far away from his kingdom. As such, the sentry established a prison ship within No-man's Wharf, where it packed the undead onto its ship and ferried them to the Lost Bastille, where they will be doomed to live in prison until the end of time.

The Bearer of the Curse can find the Flexile Sentry within its ship in the No-man's Wharf, which will not enter the harbor until a lever is pulled that will ring a bell. Traversing to the ship and pass the Varangian Sailors, entering the partly submerged hold of the ship contains the Flexile Sentry, ready to make the Bearer its next victim.

Whichever half of the Flexile Sentry is the closest to the player will attack them, swinging their swords or clubs towards them. The sword wielding side is agile and attacks in quick succession, but its attacks drain little stamina if blocked. Whereas the club wielding side is slower, but drains a lot of stamina if blocked. If the sword half manages to skewer the player on one of its swords, it will lift the player in the air where they will be quickly hacked by both sides of the sentry.

While its attacks are fast and hit quite hard, the sentry leaves enough time between each of its combos for the player to either attack or heal. Additionally, using the mast in the center of the room can hinder the monster's movement or intercept its combos. During the fight, the water level will slowly rise, slowing down the player's movement, but not enough to slow their dodge rolls. Eventually, the sentry goes down and the player is granted access to the ship's navigation room, allowing them to sail the ship to the Lost Bastille.

Another Flexile Sentry can be encountered in the Shaded Woods before the Shrine of Winter, and will drop a Twinkling Titanite when defeated. In the Scholar of the First Sin edition, the sentry in the Shaded Woods is removed and a respawning sentry can be found within the flooded waters of Sinner's Rise, replacing the Enhanced Undead from the default game. In the Crown of the Burnt Ivory King DLC, behind a door unlocked by lighting braziers leads to a cave containing two non-respawning sentries.

Trivia[]

  • Defeating the Flexile Sentry is optional as the player is granted additional access to the Lost Bastille by defeating the Pursuer.
  • The design of the Flexile Sentry is possibly based on the Makhai of Greek mythology.
  • In New Game Plus runs, the Flexile Sentry will be accompanied by two Suspicious Shadows.
