I've seen him in battle before, and oh what a sight it was. Perhaps I'm ranked too low for him to notice me right now. Well, he may not recognize my strengths yet, but one day, I'll show him what I'm made of.
~ Tartaglia on Capitano.
"The ever-righteous Captain," "the brave and fearless Captain," "the nigh-invincible Captain"... Even my mechanical ears demand maintenance after listening to so many compliments from the members of the Fatui. Don't you think that possessing absolute righteousness is actually a latent danger? And that's without taking his great personal strength into account.
~ The Wanderer on Capitano.

Thrain also know as Il Capitano, The Captain and the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, is a major character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.

He was the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, a group of influential individuals who acted as the chief lieutenants of the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya. Codenamed "The Captain," he was an honorable and powerful warrior who was deeply respected by his subordinates. Cursed with immortality, he was once a military commander from Khaenri'ah.

He is voiced by Wei Wang in Chinese, by Chris Tergliafera in English, and by Ken Narita in Japanese. Tergliafera has also voiced Silva Zoldyck in Hunter x Hunter and Gaston in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. Narita has also voiced Sesshomaru in Inuyasha.

Appearance[]

Capitano was an ordinary human who had eerie dark blue eyes that seemed to glow with a strange aura. He wore a helmet to cover his scarred face when he suffered severe injury by the Abyss. He lost his appearance and his flesh turned rotten many years ago due to the curse of immortality.

Synopsis[]

Past[]

Il Capitano was originally a man from Khaenri'ah (which was destroyed by the Heavenly Principles 500 years ago). However, he lost his family and loved ones to the Abyss Order. As one of the pure-blooded Khaenri'an survivors, he was cursed with immortality, much like Dainsleif and Pierro were, but his appearance was no longer that of his prime; Abyssal injury scarred his face heavily. Being a Khaenri'an, he was acquainted with Dainsleif, who back then was the leader of the Royal Guards of Khaenri'ah.

Following Khaenri'ah's destruction by the Heavenly Principles, he came into the service of the Tsaritsa, the Cryo Archon and the ruler of Snezhnaya, seeking to overthrow the Heavenly Principles and gets acquainted with Pierro, the former Court Mage of Khaenri'ah, who is now the Director of the Fatui, and a direct subordinate of the Tsaritsa.

The Nigh-Invincible Captain[]

Il Capitano a.k.a. "The Captain" was the First of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, a group of powerful men and women who commanded the Fatui. The Fatui were a military faction who governed over the nation Snezhnaya and followed the Cryo Archon, the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya, in her quest to overthrow the Gods of Celestia. The Captain was a powerful combatant who valued honor and was well-liked by his subordinates. On one occasion he shared a battlefield with Tartaglia, the Eleventh Harbinger, who was in awe of his strength.

Investiture of The Knave[]

At some point, Capitano attended the inauguration of a new Fatui Harbinger alongside the Sixth Harbinger Scaramouche and the Eighth Harbinger La Signora. The new Harbinger was a woman named Peruere who had been raised in the House of the Hearth, a Fatui-sponsored orphanage overseen by an abusive Fatui Harbinger codenamed "The Knave." Peruere had defeated and killed the abusive Knave, a crime that the Tsaritsa had decided to pardon. Peruere was invested by Pierro, and she became "Arlecchino" a.k.a. "The Knave." Arlecchino soon reopened the House of the Hearth, where she treated the children better than her predecessor had.

Funeral for The Fair Lady[]

Though her methods tarnished her honor, Lohefalter's sacrifice is a great pity. Her loss shall not hinder our progress. But Dottore... What of Scaramouche and the Gnosis from Inazuma?
~ Capitano during La Signora's funeral.
The Harbingers gathered at Signora's funeral

The Captain, alongside the other Harbingers, gathered in a cathedral in Snezhnaya for the funeral of Signora, who had been executed by the Electro Archon Beelzebul during a failed Fatui plot in the nation of Inazuma. Although he disapproved of her methods, which he deemed as dishonorable, Il Capitano nevertheless thought that her loss was a shame. Setting aside the matter of the funeral, the Captain inquired about the ongoing hunt for Scaramouche, who had gone rogue during the Inazuma plot and taken the Electro Archon's Gnosis with him. Il Dottore informed him that they would have to wait for Scaramouche to make his next move before proceeding further. Pierro proceeded to silence the gathered Harbingers and made a speech in La Signora's memory as her coffin was encased in ice.

Knights of Favonius[]

One day, I met the Fatui Harbinger known as The Captain. I can't even begin to imagine how I can deal with an opponent like him. I just... Such powerful people are really on a level of their own, I'm not even remotely close...
~ Knights of Favonius Front-Line Surveyor Mika Schmidt on encountering Il Capitano.

Sometime later, the Captain encountered a large expedition party in the northernmost part of Teyvat. The expedition was from the nation of Mondstadt, and was led by the Grand Master of the valorous Knights of Favonius Varka. Although the Fatui had a tenuous relationship with the Knights of Favonius, Capitano worked with Varka and his party. He later parted ways with the Knights and headed to the nation of Natlan. Upon arriving in the nation, the Captain began participating in the endless conflicts that plagued Natlan.

Research Facility[]

After arriving in Natlan, Capitano had his subordinates set up the Phlogiston Extraction Research Center, a secret underground research base built into the Coatepec Mountain in eastern Natlan. The research facility captured and experimented on saurians, with the intention to extract phlogiston from their bodies. The Captain made routine visits to the base in order to keep track of its progress.

Main Quest[]

Capitano come to challenge Mavuika for Pyro Gnosis. Both of them fighting in intense battle and no one is stronger than the other, until Mavuika is able to injure Capitano. But before Mavuika could deal a fatal blow, someone throw a smoke grenade to the Arena, allowing him to escape.

In 5.1 Capitano and Ororon come to talk with traveler when the latter try to find Ororon. Ororon help Capitano because he had a doubt in Mavuika plan and want to do something useful. But Capitano was force to leave when Citlali follow before they can fully explain their plan.

With furthure investigation. Traveler, Xilonen and Mavuika find out that he want to use Pyro Gnosis to sacrifice the Night Kingdom to restore Leyline and temporary protect the Natlan from Abyss, but now he no longer need Gnosis because he found the Source Mechanism from Dragon civilization that allow him to achieve the same goal. The problem of his plan is that by reshape the Leyline, everyone belong in Natlan will lose their memories and turn them into savage cave man with no knowledge to protect themselve from future Abyss invasion. So they rush to his hiding cave just to stop him in time. But the mechanism awake Yohualtecuhtin, Servant of Ronova. Capitano say that his plan is to protect Natlan people to not suffer the same fate as Khaenri'ah, but Mavuika argue sacrifice Natlan culture and memories is not worthing. After some debate, Capitano agree to give Mavuika plan a chance.

Capitano alongside Fatui Soliders help Natlan people fight of the Abyss. Both Fatui and Natlan suffer casualty but eventually Sacred Flame and Six Ancient Name Warriors allow some of Natlan victims with ancient names to be revive and successfully push of the Abyss. He was present at celebrating party and tell Traveler that he know Dainsleif and The Sibling hoping that the Twins will reuinte one day. At the end of the quest, Capitano come back to talk with Yohualtecuhtin to discuss about Mavuika that was fate to died as a price for borrowing Ronova powers.

In 5.2, when Traveler and Chasca tried to cure people suffering from Abyss Mental corrosion. One of the patient is too delude by the illusion to be cure, Capitano intervene and give the patient medicine that cure the Abyss corrosion but will cause user to have headache for the rest of his life which is a small price to play to return sanity. Here Capitano talk to Traveler and Paimon that Ronova curse Pure-Blood Khaenri'ans, showing his face to traveler which is erode from age yet unable to died. He say their goal is not entirely the same, but they must fight together until the Abyss in the Night Kingdom is defeat. He leave after Iansan come to talk with Traveler about forging ancient name.

Incandescent Ode of Resurrection[]

3 days before the final battle of the Abyss in Natlan, Traveler have a dream seeing Captain tell to the souls of Khaenri'ahns people inside him that say he will bring them to the promise land. After waking up, Traveler, Paimon and Mavuika go to have a party at the Meztli tribe with their friends. Where they disscuss the dreams everyone have. It's the side effect of the Ode of Resurrection that will lingering for a times. But Traveler dream is unique, Mavuika suspect that Captain try to find a way to bring Khaenri'ahns souls inside his body to become part of Night Kingdom, but unknown how it will be possible because Night Kingdom doesn't accept the soul of the outsider. Regardless, Mavuika doesn't consider his plan to be a threat to their goals of defeating the Abyss.

Capitano remain unseen until Mavuika and Traveler travel to the Night Kingdom, defeat Heart of The Abyss Gosoythoth, and come back. While Traveler is celebrating with everyone, Citlali come to talk with Traveler in hurry as she find out Mavuika is still fate to died. They come to find her in Ochkanatlan where she's with Yohualtecuhtin and Ruler of Death Ronova. Mavuika say she will return to a sacred flame again to extend it's power as it is a rule to use power of death, so Natlan people can have a long and secure future without have to fight the Abyss. However, before she can sacrifice herself, Yohualtecuhtin say there's another person volunteer to sacrifice, and he's Captain himself.

Captain appear before them and say he want to volunteer to sacrifice himself to become part of Night Kingdom, so souls in his body can finally have a resting place. But because Captain and Khaenri'ahns are curse with immortality, Ronova must either lift the curse so they can died, allow Captain to sacrifice without lift the curse which will stop the future need for sacrifice due to his immortality will be transfer to Yohualtecuhtin thus breaking the rule of death, or risk creating a paradox that could destroy Celestia rule entirely.

Ronova accept Captain offer and choose to retain The Curse of Immortality which allow Night Kingdom and Yohualtecuhtin herself to become immortal and negate the need of future sacrifice. Captain sit on the throne of Ochkanatlan and let his soul along with his comrade souls leave his body (but is still alive because of the curse) and enter the Night Kingdom and allow them to finally have peace.

Day later, Natlan people make a funeral to all people died fighting the Abyss including Captain himself. Where Traveler, Mavuika, and their friends all go to pay respect. Make him the second Harbinger to fall and the first that failed to obtain Gnosis, however Mavuika say Tsaritsa will attempt to send another Harbinger to steal her Pyro gnosis eventually, and warn traveler that they should be prepare before heading to Snezhnaya.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Cryokinesis: The Captain had the ability to wield the power of "Cryo," the natural element that governed coldness. Using Cryo, he could generate ice and telekinetically manipulate it into whatever shape he desired. Capitano was known to conjure weapons out of ice, such as a one-handed sword. In his hands, Capitano's ice weaponry could withstands the blows of an Archon.
    • Flight: As an application of his ability to telekinetically manipulate the Cryo element, Capitano could coat his own body in a layer of pure Cryo energy in order to lift himself up and grant himself the power of flight. He was able to move at high-speeds while flying, so much so that he could even evade blasts of elemental energy fired by the Pyro Archon herself.
  • Immortality: Because of their supposed transgressions, all pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns including the Sentinel Knight were cursed with a form of immortality by Ronova, the Ruler of Death and a Shade of the Heavenly Principles. Ronova used her power to redefine the rules of death for the pure-blooded Khaenri'ahns so that their bodies and minds slowly corroded over time but they were incapable of actually dying.

Abilities[]

  • Political Influence: As one of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, Capitano was invested with nigh-unlimited executive authority by the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya. With the political and economical power invested in him, the Captain could call upon almost any resource in furtherance of the goal of the Fatui. He could command the authority of any Fatuus who weren't themselves Harbingers, and presumably wielded unquestionable authority in Snezhnaya. Additionally, his official position as a Snezhnayan diplomat meant that he couldn't be prosecuted in foreign nations without significant political tension being caused.

Equipment[]

  • Delusion: A Delusion was a device similar in nature to a Vision, allowing its user to channel elemental energy. Unlike a Vision, however, Delusions weren't bequeathed onto mortals by the gods of Celestia but instead manufactured by the hands of mortals. Created by the Fatui to aid them in their goals, Delusions were personally granted by the Tsaritsa to her loyal subjects; few outside the Eleven Fatui Harbingers were privileged enough to receive a Delusion. Although more powerful than Visions, Delusions were more volatile and gradually drained the lifeforce of its wielder.

Trivia[]

  • Like the other Fatui Harbingers, Capitano's name and alias were derived from a stock character in commedia dell'arte, a form of traditional Italian pantomime theater characterized by its masked characters and representation of fixed social types. In commedia dell'arte, Il Capitano was a boastful man who told stories of great conquests he had undertaken, although he never presented any evidence of his deeds.
  • Capitano's legendary deeds in battle earned him many monikers from his Fatui subordinates, including "The Ever-Righteous Captain," "The Brave and Fearless Captain," and "The Nigh-Invincible Captain."
  • He is the second Harbinger to died after Signora despite both of them are populars and was expect to become playable. However, his death is more happy and fitting end for his characters because he pass away peaceful along with souls inside him.
