"We built a Mind Machine to enter Baljeet's subconscious in order to cure his fear of contractions." — Phineas[src] |
The Mind Machine is a subconscious projector built by Phineas and Ferb to help their friends in their internal problems.
History[]
Candace watches Jeremy waiting at a bus stop, where he loses an object as he gets on the ride. Noticing this, she rushes to pick it up for him, learning from a quick call that it is supposedly a gift to her. Confused on its nature, she tries to find its purpose, but accidentally flings it in the sewer. In hopes of recreating it, she dashes to find her brothers, who are using a mind device to cure their friends' fears. Since she can't describe the item, the boys decide to delve into her subconscious with the machine.
Now connected to the invention, Phineas, Ferb, and Baljeet join Candace inside her brain. Irving, in charge of the operation, reminds them of the time limit, leading Phineas to state their end goal of the Forest of Memory. Observing their surroundings, the kids see her id, a manifestation of her urges. A careful navigation lands them at the Falls of Anxiety, where Buford appears, unintentionally strengthening her nerves. While the main group continues their mission, the bully guides Isabella and the Fireside Girls through the landscape.
Following a trip further down the conscious, the kids and Candace arrive at her recent memories, inside which they stimulate her cortex so that she can remember, uncovering the mysterious item nearby. At that moment, Jeremy shows up to clarify the gift misunderstanding. Suddenly, the ravenous id starts to chase everyone, forcing them to keep running. Out of options, the gang uses fear to shock Baljeet, who ultimately breaks the machine just as they are swallowed by the monster ("Monster from the Id").
Design[]
The Mind Machine is a small device with a red spherical upper section surrounded by orange markings, and a yellow rectangular base connected to a control panel, and the wire distributor. Four wires are inserted into each user's head, colored red, yellow, green, and black.
Mechanics[]
The Mind Machine is a subconscious projector based on the principles of Freudian psychoanalysis in regards to the unconscious mind. Displays of cognitive drives include desires, personal tastes, anxieties, and urges, the latter being represented by the id. By interacting with one's mind, the users can stimulate it towards a particular goal, whether to recover a memory or remove a fear.
Background Information[]
- Candace's initial guesses on Jeremy's item are a tiara, necklace, broach, and bracelet. The latter wounds up being the actual gift, whereas the object is in reality a drain unclogger.
- The two first uses of the Mind Machine had been to cure Irving's dread of the color lavender, and Baljeet's angst towards contractions. The second is stopped mid-way for Candace, which ends up favorable for the mission, as Baljeet's fear is what gets them out of trouble.
- The method of entering one's brain is to count backwards from four once the device is activated.
- Irving adopts the codename "Mindmaster", a play on the word "mastermind", while he addresses his friends as "Deep Divers", a reference to the similarities between the acts of diving and going inside someone's mind.
- Users of the Mind Machine have a time limit of 45 minutes to perform the desired change in the conscious, according to Irving.
- Among Candace's anxieties, there are worries about the length of her neck and the odd consistency of her outfits. These are allusions to her abnormal shape, and the fact that cartoon characters usually always wear the same clothes.
- Before Irving can get the gang out of their situation, he is hit by an underwear ray, getting him in lavender underpants, to his dismay. This indicates that the Mind Machine's effects may be somewhat limited.
- Buford does not get out of Candace's mind. Instead, he befriends her id thanks to their similar nature.
