History[]
Past[]
Centuries ago, Shimotsuki Ryuma became a well known swordsman in Wano to the point his actions became legends. After his death, his body and sword, Shusui were both laid to rest in Ringo. Due to his fame, the Shimotsuki Family grew to become a respected family in Wano, having two of the country's regions entrusted to them. 23 years ago, Gecko Moria invaded Wano and managed to steal both Ryuma's corpse and sword from his grave. He then merged a shadow into it, turning it into a loyal zombie.
Fifty-five years ago, Shimotsuki Kouzaburou left Wano with a blade he forged named Wado Ichimonji alongside another relative named Furiko. Both ended up in East Blue, where Kouzaburou saved a village from bandits. They eventually settled down there and started their own families.
- Four years after his departure from Wano, Kouzaburou had a son named Koushirou.[6] When Koushirou was 29, his daughter Kuina was born, and she inherited the Wado Ichimonji. Eleven years later, Kuina fell down the stairs and died.[7]
- Furiko married a swordsman named Roronoa Pinzoro and had a son named Arashi. Arashi then married the daughter of a mountain bandit named Tera and sired his own son named Zoro, who became a rival to Kuina. After Kuina's death, Zoro inherited the Wado Ichimonji and later became a bounty hunter, and then a member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
After Kurozumi Orochi and the Beasts Pirates took over, the known family members sided with the Kouzuki Family, resulting in Ushimaru's imprisonment and later death while Yasuie went into hiding for the next 20 years and adopting Toko. Yasuie sold his daughter to the Flower Capital, where she befriended Kouzuki Hiyori and worked as her kamuro while Hiyori was the courtesan known as Komurasaki. Yasuie lived as a resident of Ebisu Town.
Thriller Bark Arc[]
During his time on Thriller Bark, Zoro clashed with his ancestor, Ryuma and won. As a result, Ryuma's body was destroyed while Zoro was entrusted with Shusui.
Wano Country Arc[]
In Wano, Yasuie encountered Zoro and befriended him, and also helped members of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance by providing them a place to stay in Ebisu Town. When the alliance's plans began falling apart due to Orochi and the Beasts Pirates discovering Kin'emon's secret message, Yasuie decided to sacrifice himself. After his capture, Yasuie altered the message and during his public execution, he claimed responsibility for the message prior to his demise. Toko, witnessing her father's death, mourned deeply for him.
During which, Shusui was stolen from Zoro by Onimaru, who returned it to Ryuma's grave. Zoro attempted to get it back, but Hiyori was able to convince Zoro to leave it there by offering him Enma, another sword forged by Kouzaburou.
Trivia[]
- Shimotsuki (霜月?, literally meaning, "frost moon") fits most of the Wano Country families' theme of having the kanji "moon" in its name.
- "Shimotsuki" is the old Japanese name for November.
