Sigma is the overarching antagonist and final boss of Mega Man X3. He is fought in Doppler Stage D after the defeated Dr. Doppler directs X there, urging him to destroy Sigma's new body.

Strategy[]

First form[]

Sigma's first form wields a shield and a flamethrower. His shield protects him from frontal attacks, though he briefly lowers it to attack and can be shot from behind while jumping. He has a fairly simple attack pattern, but the speed and tricky trajectories of his fire balls can make this battle quite difficult. When at low health, he also throws his shield like a boomerang. This form is weak to Spinning Blade and Frost Shield.

MMX3 Sigma FireBullet Flame Shot (火炎弾 Kaen-dan)[2]
Sigma jumps into the air and shoots three fireballs at the floor, each splitting along the floor and walls. He shoots diagonally down or straight down depending on the player's position.
Damage: 1
MMX3 Sigma RapidFire Rapid-Fire Flame Shot (火炎弾速射 Kaen-dan Sokusha)[2]
Sigma shoots a sequence of six fireballs with a variety of trajectories, each climbing the wall on contact.
Damage: 8
MMX3 Sigma ShieldThrow Shield Throw (シールドスロー Shīrudo Surō)[2]
Sigma throws his shield, which returns to him like a boomerang. If the player is above him, Sigma throws the shield upwards so it moves in a figure-eight shape. Sigma only uses this attack when below half health.
Damage: 8

Kaiser Sigma[]

Kaiser Sigma (カイザーシグマ) is a heavily-armored form that Sigma calls his ultimate battle body. It is incredibly large, taking up most of the arena and threatening contact damage, but is also very slow and can be maneuvered around with dashes and air dashes. It deploys a constant onslaught of floating mines and homing missiles, along with a powerful energy beam that deals incremental damage. Kaiser Sigma can only be damaged by Charge Shots to Sigma's head, and the Z-Saber is particularly effective.

MMX3 KaiserSigma Mine Mine (機雷 Kirai)[3]
Kaiser Sigma regularly deploys mines, alternating from which shoulder, that travel straight before changing trajectories towards the player.
Damage: 8
MMX3 KaiserSigma Missile Missile (ミサイル Misairu)[3]
Kaiser Sigma fires four homing missiles from his back.
Damage: 8
MMX3 KaiserSigma Beam Beam (ビーム Bīmu)[3]
Kaiser Sigma charges up before firing a wide beam from one of his shoulder cannons. The beam causes no knockback, but deals constant damage as long as the player is in it. The cannons can aim diagonally up or down, depending on the player's location. The beam also destroys Kaiser Sigma's own projectiles.
Damage: 1-16

Sigma Virus[]

MMX3 SigmaVirus Chamber

The Sigma Virus appears.

Though both Sigma's bodies are destroyed, the battle is not yet over, as the Sigma Virus emerges. In a bid to possess X's body, he floods the chamber with dangerous lava, forcing the player to wall kick up a shaft. The Sigma Virus deals contact damage and can knock the player into the lava, so he must be avoided. Upon escaping the shaft, the Sigma Virus corners X, with either Zero or Dr. Doppler coming to X's rescue by hitting the Sigma Virus with an anti-virus.

Other appearances[]

  • Sigma's first form appeared as a Guild Boss in Mega Man X DiVE, simply called Sigma (X3 1st Form). He uses his usual attack pattern with a deal of new attacks as well. These include a shield dash, a homing shield throw, a physical attack where he knocks the player upwards with his shield if they get too close, and a fireball that explodes into eight smaller fireballs.

Trivia[]

  • In the Maverick Hunter's Field Guide, Sigma's first form is called Sigma (Dopple Town).[4] Furthermore, he is referred to as "dopsig" in Mega Man X DiVE's internal files, a portmanteau of Sigma and Dopple Town.
  • Kaiser Sigma is the first and (so far) only form of Sigma to not have any weakness to the Special Weapons.
  • Sigma's two forms in Mega Man X3 are considered by many fans as one of the hardest Sigma battles, particularly Kaiser Sigma. This is due to its high damage output, difficult-to-avoid attacks, no Special Weapon weakness, and his head being a small hitbox for damage.
  • In the August 9th prototype for Rockman X3, Sigma's sprite has an art style closer to his appearance in Mega Man X2. The reason for the redesign in later builds is unknown, but it takes up more memory space than the prototype's graphics.
  • Sigma's trademark face scars in both forms are depicted in a larger manner than usual, appearing to cover the sides of his face.
