- "Remember how excited you guys were when I was able to make those cuffs so fast? Just hold on to that feeling."
- âDeke Shaw to Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons[src]
The Sonic Barrier Cuffs were special wristbands designed by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a means to prevent Izel from possessing them.
History[]
Having discovered that Izel could possess people, which ended up costing Agent James Davis' life,[1] S.H.I.E.L.D. tasked Leo Fitz, Jemma Simmons and Deke Shaw with devising a way to prevent such things. Initially, they struggled to find a way as they did not even know whether Izel's capabilities were based on biochemistry or technology. However, upon listening to a conversation between Sarge and Daisy Johnson, Shaw figured out the mechanisms of Izel's powers. Once he shared his discovery with Fitz and Simmons, they began designing the countermeasure, figuring out that it should be a wearable device.[2]
Working on a tight schedule, Fitz and Simmons were able to craft a single device to present to Johnson. However, Shaw, who had secretly brought the staff of his tech company into the Lighthouse, was able to produce several other copies of an initial version of the Sonic Barrier Cuffs to be used during a final mission against Izel.
Shaw's company kept on improving the design of the bracelets, making them look more aesthetic in his taste. He then used the ShawDrive to transport himself inside the Temple of the Forgotten and gave the barrier cuffs to Yo-Yo Rodriguez, Alphonso Mackenzie and Flint who were trapped with Izel. Thanks to the device, Izel was unable to possess Rodriguez, who violently punched her, enabling the group to escape from her.[3]
Design and Capabilities[]
The Sonic Barrier Cuffs were large bracelets, with the initial design being quite plain and simple while Deke Shaw's Company later perfected its appearance by adding it a rose cold color and chamfer. The device continuously emitted an inaudible sound signal inside the body of its wearer, on a frequency out of phase with the one emitted by the Shrike Daggers. The resulting disruption in the harmonic frequencies caused Izel to be unable to possess the wearer.
