As the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury spearheaded the Avengers Initiative, to put together a response team of remarkable individuals, to protect Earth from global threats. Fury's plan ultimately succeeded, as the Avengers defeated Loki and defended the planet from Chitauri invasion, however, the battle claimed the life of Phil Coulson.^[2]
