"Thanos already has the Power Stone because he stole it last week when he decimated Xandar."
―Thor to the Guardians of the Galaxy[src]

The Massacre of the Xandarians was an immense slaughter orchestrated by Thanos and the Black Order to obtain the Power Stone. Thanos arrived on Xandar where he proceeded to wipe out half of the Xandarians and obtained the Stone, which had been under protection by the Nova Corps.

Background[]

"I only ask that you take this matter seriously."
"The only matter I do not take seriously, boy, is you. Your politics bore me. Your demeanor is that of a pouty child. And apparently, you alienated my favorite daughter, Gamora. I shall honor our agreement, Kree, if you bring me the Orb. But return to me again empty handed... And I will bathe the starways in your blood."
―Ronan the Accuser and Thanos[src]

As he planned to gather all six Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe, the Mad Titan Thanos struck alliances which were supposed to bring him the Stones. However, Loki was supposed to bring back the Tesseract but lost it along with the Mind Stone embedded in the Scepter following his defeat during the Battle of New York.[4]

Two years later, Thanos hired his associate in the Kree Empire, Ronan the Accuser, to retrieve the Orb, which contained the Power Stone, for him in exchange for the annihilation of Xandar, which he harbored revenge against due to the status of the Kree-Nova War. However, various other parties conflicted over the possession of the Orb, triggering a series of circumstances that would lead to Ronan's death at the hands of the Guardians of the Galaxy and the subsequent bequeathment of the Orb to the Nova Corps.[5]

Fed up with these failures, Thanos decided to go and find the Stones himself.[6] Thanos' quest for the Infinity Stones was to begin with Xandar, where the Power Stone had been stored within the Nova Corps Headquarters following Ronan's defeat during the Battle of Xandar.[1]

Massacre[]

In 2018, in accordance to their usual operation, Thanos and the Black Order traveled to Xandar and invaded the planet, effortlessly destroying the Nova Corps. Thanos retrieved the Orb from the Nova Corps Headquarters, destroyed it, and placed the Power Stone in the Infinity Gauntlet. Thanos and the Black Order then massacred half of the Xandarians as part of his quest to balance the universe.[1]

Aftermath[]

"He has the Power and Space Stones; that already makes him the strongest creature in the whole universe."
―Bruce Banner[src]

The massacre sparked the beginning of the Infinity War. Having successfully retrieved the Power Stone, which enabled him to strike with even more might than before, Thanos immediately sought to acquire the other Infinity Stones. His quest led him to find the surviving Asgardians aboard the Statesman, where Thanos knew he could find the Space Stone contained in the Tesseract. As a result, Thanos and the Black Order attacked the ship in a successful attempt to reclaim the Space Stone.

Later, Thor relayed the news of Xandar's decimation to the Guardians of the Galaxy, much to their visible shock and horror, as they had almost died to save it and maintained a working relationship with the Nova Empire.[1]
