Marcus Mackenzie is the uncle of Alphonso and Ruben Mackenzie. He gained the custody of his nephews following the death of his brother John and his sister-in-law Lilla.

Marcus Mackenzie began raising his nephews, Alphonso and Ruben, following the deaths of their parents. One day, Mackenzie drove Alphonso and Ruben to his house, where the three got out of the car. Mackenzie reminded Alphonso and Ruben to get their backpacks, and the three then went inside.
Mackenzie became friendly with Deke Shaw, who frequently visited and helped the family when he could. Shaw helped Mackenzie get a new car, and became friendly with the children. He continued to visit the Mackenzie family regularly.
Mackenzie was later introduced to a future version of Alphonso, who acted under the cover of being in Shaw's band.[1]
