- âRichard Lumley[src]
Hunan is a province of the People's Republic of China, located in the south-central part of the country.
History[]
Waigong's Home[]
Waipo Chen and her husband originally lived in the Hunan province before they emigrated to San Francisco.[1]
Shangri-La Base[]
- "This base in China's Hunan Province was officially abandoned."
- âS.H.I.E.L.D. Report[src]
In 1968, an unknown incident made the Shangri-La base in Hunan province to be declared officially abandoned.
As known among S.H.I.E.L.D. inner circles, the Shangri-La base unofficially continued to be active well into the 1990s with the tacit cooperation of the People's Republic of China.[2]
Massacre in Hunan[]
Calvin Zabo and his wife Jiaying lived together in China, where Zabo worked in a clinic and the woman who would become his wife worked with him, helping with translations due to his bad Chinese. They eventually fell in love, married, and had a child, whom Zabo delivered himself.
In 1989, a group of men identifying themselves as S.H.I.E.L.D., who were actually members of HYDRA, arrived at Hunan and intended to take the woman, saying that she was dangerous due to her gift. Zabo attempted to fight them off, but his wife was kidnapped along with the rest of elders from the village. Zabo left his daughter with people he trusted to search for his wife in Europe.[3]
Zabo had killed many of the HYDRA operatives that went to the village[3], and S.H.I.E.L.D. tasked one of his teams, that included rookie agents Linda Avery and Richard Lumley, to investigate an 0-8-4 in Hunan, assuming the entire village died trying to protect the object. As Avery and Lumley lost communication with the first team sent, they investigated the area and found their senior agent under a bridge with a fatal wound, having managed to escape with the 0-8-4 but ultimately dying while doing so.
The object turned out to be a baby girl, who had fallen asleep in the dead agent's arms, and the five surviving agents took the baby and returned to the United States, where they began to be killed one by one, being Lumley the only survivor, although Avery devised a plan to erase all information about the baby and put her under an invisible protocol so that the foster system moved the child every few months in order to protect her.[4]
