There are two major differences between the story of this book and the one from the film. The first one is that Star-Lord, Rocket and Groot are friends before they meet Drax and Gamora. They later ask Drax and Gamora for help to sell the Orb, which does not fit with the events of the film. Therefore, this content is categorized as non-canon.
