- "Were you able to locate the Super-Soldier?"
"No. We did locate an important clue that could have pointed us in the right direction, but with the ever shifting topography of the Greenland ice sheet, I imagine we'll be starting from scratch again." - âA World Security Council member and Nick Fury[src]
Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.
History[]
Sinking of the Valkyrie[]
In 1945, Steve Rogers, piloting the Valkyrie after Johann Schmidt was presumed deceased, sent a transmission informing Peggy Carter of Schmidt's apparent death and the status of the plane, headed to New York City in order to destroy it. To save countless civilian lives, Rogers decided to sink the plane in the icy waters of the Arctic. Over the next decades, the crashed plane would end up on the frozen shores near Greenland.[1]
Howard Stark's Forged Confession[]
- "Where's the man himself?"
"Uh... Somewhere over Greenland, scheduled to land in Teterboro at approximately 9:00 P.M. this evening." - âRoger Dooley and Edwin Jarvis[src]
According to Edwin Jarvis, Howard Stark was flying over Greenland in order to hand himself to the Strategic Scientific Reserve in exchange for Peggy Carter's freedom. However, Jarvis forged Stark's confession and he did not return to the United States of America until a few days later.[2]
Search of Captain America[]
- "How come nobody spotted it before?"
"It's really not that surprising. This landscape's changing all the time." - âS.H.I.E.L.D. tech agent and Search Team Leader[src]
A group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by Nick Fury and Phil Coulson came to Greenland to find the remains of the Valkyrie. One day, a team led by Fury discovered one of the disabled flying bombs from the Valkyrie. When Fury returned to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Base Camp in the northeast coast of Greenland, Coulson suggested the need to accelerate the search given the proximity of a glacial shift that would hamper its success.
Soon, Fury was informed that the World Security Council scheduled a call at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters in New York City, and meanwhile they gave an executive order to cease the expeditions over the Arctic Region, giving an explanation for that order during the scheduled call. A year later, the Valkyrie was discovered, with Captain America's frozen, but still living body inside.[3]
