- "You brought this upon yourself!"
"They have nothing to do with this! They're in my blood, in my heart. I'm a part of them, and they're a part of me. I'm their legacy... not yours."
"Good, now I know how much it will hurt you when I kill the rest of your family. Just like I killed your father!" - âKingpin and Echo[src]
The Battle at Haskell County Fairgrounds was an offensive started by Kingpin to make Maya Lopez pay for turning away from him.
Background[]
Realizing the truth that Wilson Fisk orchestrated the death of her father, Maya Lopez defected from the Tracksuit Mafia and shot Fisk in the head, before fleeing New York City.[3] Hiding from Fisk's men in Tamaha, Oklahoma, Lopez reconnected with her uncle Henry and asked for his help in her war against Fisk's criminal empire, but he refused to bring the war to his home.[1] Lopez ignored Henry's warnings and with Biscuits' help, she attacked the Black Knife Cartel's arms shipment that was being transported via Fisk Shipping to New York.[4] Zane and the Cartel retailiated by obtaining the lead from Vickie Tyson and going after Lopez to Oklahoma.
Following a prolonged altercation, Zane forced Lopez to surrender by threatening Bonnie and prepared to execute both Lopez and Henry. However, Fisk recovered from the gunshot and called Zane, ordering him to stand down and let Lopez go, as he intended to see her personally.[2] He arrived at the town himself and met with Lopez, making it clear that he harbors no ill will against her, even in spite of her trying to kill him. He made a proposition to give Lopez a part of his empire in exchange of her returning to New York with him, giving her time to think. Lopez was not keen on going back to Fisk, claiming that he never truly cared about her and only used her as his personal pawn.
Fisk accepted Lopez's accusations, saying that he failed her the same way his own father failed him, and revealed to Lopez that Fisk murdered his father when he was a child. He showed her a hammer that he used to do the deed and told her that she should kill him as well, so both of them could be free. Lopez hesitated but ultimaltely chose not to kill Fisk, which he took as a confirmation that she will come back to him. However, Lopez instead ran away from Tamaha and as Fisk's men failed to tail her, he became furious that she betrayed him.[5] Metting Chula Battiest at a local post office, Fisk made a decision to make Lopez pay for her betrayal by taking away those dear to her.[6]
Battle[]
With Choctaw Nation Powwow coming up, Wilson Fisk ordered his men to kidnap both Chula Battiest and Bonnie, while Zane and the Black Knife Cartel infilitrated the powwow, awaiting his orders. Biscuits spotted Zane and his men in the crowd and informed Henry Lopez about them, who also rushed to the powwow in case the situation gets dangerous. Maya Lopez sneaked at the powwow and walked into the barn, where she confronted Fisk, but he then revealed that he had Chula and Bonnie as his hostages. With Bonnie acting as an interpreter, Fisk expressed his utter disappointment in Lopez for her betrayal after everything he had done for her, but Lopez replied that he was the one who betrayed her.
Lopez then pleaded with Fisk to let Chula and Bonnie go, saying that they are not a part of their issue and that they are Lopez's true family. Fisk responded by taunting Lopez that he now knows how much it will hurt Lopez when he kills them, the same way he had her father killed. He then gave Zane a signal to prepare an attack on the powwow and massacre the attenders, while instructing his men to beat Lopez up. However, Lopez was able to tap into the powers of her ancestors and share them with Chula and Bonnie, giving them the strength to fight aginst Fisk's men. Meanwhile, Biscuits ran over a van with the Cartel members on his monster truck, while Henry gunned down Zane before he fired a rocket launcher at the powwow, saving everyone there.
Once Lopez, Chula and Bonnie managed to take down Fisk's men, Fisk then charged Lopez himself, but she then touched his heart with her powers. Tapping into Fisk's mind, she made him recall his childhood trauma, as he found himself at his old house, hearing the sounds of his father abusing his mother. As Fisk was on the verge of a breakdown, succumbing to trauma, Lopez comforted him and urged him to let go of the pain he had been holding inside his whole life. She told Fisk that he is still her family and he is nothing like his father, but Fisk yelled at her that is not a man she wanted him to be.
Fisk tried to reach for the hammer that he used to murder his father, and Lopez asked him to give it to her so he would not be tied to his painful past anymore. However, Fisk was unable to let go of his darkness completely and Lopez had to stop the ritual, bringing Fisk back. Distressed by the experience Lopez put him through, Fisk demanded her to explain what she did to him, while his men came up to pick Fisk up, pointing their guns at Lopez. Ultimately, Fisk could not bring himself to carry on with his intital plan, ordering his men to withdraw and leave Oklahoma, while Lopez and her family remained unharmed.[6]
Aftermath[]
While Maya Lopez remained in Tamaha with her family, Wilson Fisk boarded his private jet and headed back to New York City. He reached out to his associates, warning them that their situation is spiraling out of control, so they need to stabilize it before it is too late. During his flight, Fisk watched a news report about an upcoming race for the New York mayor, as the people of New York wanted the Mayor that can handle the legitimate issues of their city. Fisk found out that there was still a window of opportunity for a surprise candidate to emerge and appeal to the citizens, Fisk expressed his interest and becoming said candidate.[6]
