Multiverse Discovered
"He discovered that there were universes stacked on top of his own..."
The subject of this article comes from an alternate universe connecting to the main timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This universe is designated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki as "Killmonger's War".

"Each one is for a kill. Believe it or not, Tony, I was really hoping you wouldn't make the cut."
―Erik Killmonger to Tony Stark[src]

The Ambush on Erik Killmonger was an attempt by Tony Stark to take Erik Killmonger down, after uncovering his true intentions, which resulted in Stark's own death by Killmonger's hands.

Background[]

"For a minute, I really thought it was you and me against the world."
"We're not fighting the same battles, Tony."

Killmonger What If..

Killmonger rescues Tony Stark

Seeking to start the war between the United States of America and Wakanda, Erik Killmonger came up with a plan to manipulate Tony Stark into providing him with the resources he needed. During the deep cover operation inside the Ten Rings, Killmonger uncovered that Obadiah Stane hired them to assassinate Stark. Killmonger rescued Stark from the Ten Rings' attack and exposed Stane's plans which allowed him to gain Stark's trust and a position inside Stark Industries.

Project Liberator

Killmonger offered Stark to relaunch the Project Liberator, creating automated combat drones that would replace human troops in a ground warfare which he approved. They managed to create the first drone prototype and Killmonger suggested Stark to use vibranium as a self-sustaining power source. Stark decided to contact Ulysses Klaue to purchase the vibranium from the black market, but due to both Killmonger's and Pepper Potts' suggestions, he deployed James Rhodes to purchase the vibranium, acting as Stark Industries' military liaison.

Rhodes arrived at the Salvage Yard to secure the deal with Klaue, however, it was interrupted by the arrival of Black Panther, as Klaue leaked the information to the War Dogs. After taking down Klaue's henchmen, Black Panther attempted to reason with Rhodes that he only needed to retrieve the stolen vibranium, only for them to be ambushed by Killmonger. Killmonger killed both T'Challa and Rhodes which destabilized the political climate between the United States and Wakanda.[1]

Ambush[]

"Go ahead, call the cops. Still won't get here in time to save you."
"Yeah, well, police are the law. I want justice."
"You? You never lifted a finger in your life. You gonna ask Pepper to come and kill me?"

When the bodies of James Rhodes and T'Challa were discovered, Tony Stark figured out that their deaths were much more nuanced, so he had J.A.R.V.I.S. to investigate the incident. J.A.R.V.I.S. reconstructed the crime scene, confirming Stark's fears that Erik Killmonger was behind the killings. Seeking to avenge his friend, Stark activated the Liberator Drone prototype, using the vibranium melted from Killmonger's own ring.

Erik Killmonger manages to kill Tony Stark

When Killmonger visited Stark's mansion, Stark told him that he was aware of Killmonger's role in the killings of Rhodes and T'Challa before having the drone to attack him. Killmonger attempted to shoot the drone with his handgun but it was ineffective against its bulletproof frame. Killmonger then tried to engage with the drone in a close combat, however, he did not succeed there as well, since the drone's combat algorithms was programmed after Killmonger's own technique. Regardless, Killmonger managed to strike down the drone, using the Vibranium Spear which he then used to impale Stark. Killmonger told Stark that he sincerely wished he would not become his victim before finishing Stark with the spear and wiping out J.A.R.V.I.S. databanks to avoid being caught.[1]

Aftermath[]

"Vibranium Spear. Wakandan issue. Definite hit job."
"The Wakandans sent a message."
"Not a very subtle one."
―Thaddeus Ross and Erik Killmonger[src]

Tony Stark's body impaled by the Vibranium Spear was later found by the authorities, which was considered a declaration of war from Wakandans. Although Pepper Potts was put in charge of Stark Industries, Thaddeus Ross initiated the Patriot Act and the US military seized the company's assets to manufacture weapons and wage war on Wakanda. Using the vibranium subsequently purchased from Ulysses Klaue, Stark Industries created a battalion of the Stark Liberator Drones to later deploy them against Wakandans.

Killmonger eventually betrayed Klaue, killing him and bringing his body to Wakandans, informing them that he was a son of Prince N'Jobu. Killmonger had an audience with the Golden Tribe and informed them about Americans preparing to invade the country using the Liberator Drones. As Killmonger suggested them to let the drones under Wakanda's protective barrier to disrupt their signal, the Wakandans stepped onto a battlefield, destroying the entire drone battalion. Subsequently, Killmonger became a honored hero and a Prince of Wakanda, while the US military was preparing for a full-scale war with Wakandans.[1]
