Andrew Garner went to the store to purchase some meds, but he was ambushed by a group of HYDRA operatives led by Werner von Strucker, who had been sent by Grant Ward to kill him and began to spill gasoline on the floor. However, a gunfight ensued as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent had also been tasked in following Garner to guarantee his safety. Both the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and a HYDRA operative fell, but Garner was able to hide in the store.

However, the emotion caused by the attack caused Garner to transform into Lash, much to von Strucker's horror. Lash killed two other HYDRA operatives before turning back to Garner. Knowing that he could not afford to have his true nature revealed, Garner set the gasoline on fire himself, resulting in the convenience store being completely destroyed, while von Strucker was barely able to escape seconds before the explosion. S.H.I.E.L.D. later arrived on site and rescued Garner, who had survived the blast thanks to his powers.[1]
