1000 Needles is the Special Shot of Cactuar in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and later Mario Sports Mix. The move originates from the Final Fantasy franchise, making its first overall appearance in Final Fantasy V, as a signature ability of Cactuars in general.

The player can have Cactuar perform 1000 Needles by tapping out an "S" on the Touch Screen, causing Cactuar to dribble the ball in an "S" shape. When Cactuar uses 1000 Needles, the ball glows green, he throws it straight up, and dives headfirst with the ball into the basket, spiraling as it goes. White needles explode in all directions, although this is only for presentation and does not affect any of the characters. After performing 1000 Needles, Cactuar lands onto the ground, and two 8-bit Chocobos orbit its head for a second.
If 1000 Needles is shot outside the three-point line, Cactuar jumps, winds up its right hand, and punches the ball toward the hoop. A teammate then dunks the ball into the hoop, and the white needles appear.
1000 Needles is performed the same way in Mario Sports Mix, but any opponent affected by 1000 Needles has a small "1000" briefly appear over them, as if they had received said number of damage like in the Final Fantasy games themselves.
