2012 was Hollyoaks's eighteenth year of production.
Overview[]
Emma Smithwick continued as series producer and Tony Wood continued as executive producer, both for a second year. Executive producers Lee Hardman and Carolyn Reynolds departed early in the year, with former series producer Bryan Kirkwood joining the programme as an executive producer later in the year.
Having worked on teen-oriented programmes The Cut and Shelfstackers, Smithwick decided to bring more of the teenage/young adult characters into the spotlight. The programme also saw a slower pacing, with character development being prioritised over dramatic content. Former Emmerdale series producer Kathleen Beedles later joined the show as a story consultant and helped the programme migrate back to family units, with the pair devising iconic storylines such as Who Killed Lynsey Nolan? (after actress Karen Hassan quit the role), the Mercedes McQueen vs. Mitzeee Minniver feud, as well as Brendan Brady's past returning to haunt him. Smithwick also devised a ground-breaking bullying storyline with Esther Bloom, which played out until 2013. Beedles left the programme shortly before Kirkwood joined as an executive producer.
Darren Osborne surprised his fiancée Nancy Hayton with a Valentine's Day wedding (3278). Nancy's first pregnancy (3291) tragically ended in miscarriage (3308), but her second pregnancy (3349) resulted in the premature birth of their son Oscar (3443). Meanwhile, Jacqui McQueen discovered an abandoned baby in the front garden on Christmas Day (3502) - revealed to be John Paul McQueen's son! Doug Carter jilted Leanne Holiday at the altar (3425) and later married Ste Hay in a double ceremony with Tony Hutchinson and Cindy Cunningham (3473). Scott Sabeka's grandmother suffered a heart attack and couldn't be resuscitated (3320), Lynsey Nolan was murdered suddenly (3375), Mitzeee Minniver discovered that her prison inmate had committed suicide (3426), Simon Walker's brother Cameron passed away in long-term care (3430), Walker killed Mick Cornus to frame Brendan (L2012-3), Brendan suffocated his dying grandmother for ignoring his father's abuse (L2012-5), whilst Neil Cooper, Maddie Morrison, Rhys Ashworth (3474) and Jono (3475) were casualties of a minibus crash.

- 3rd January - Jacqui McQueen, Lynsey Nolan, Nancy Osborne, Cindy Cunningham, Cheryl Brady, Mitzeee Minniver. Myra McQueen and Carmel Valentine are all arrested when Cindy reports them all to the police for trespassing, whilst two fights break out, one between Cindy and Jacqui and the other between Mitzeee and Nancy.

- 17th January - Callum Kane meets Phoebe Jackson, a girl who George Smith has been squatting with. (First appearance of the character)
- 18th January - Ash and Callum Kane's mum, Martha, arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 23rd January - Mercedes McQueen meets doctor Paul Browning, who assumes that she is a prostitute. (First appearance of Paul Browning)
- 31st January - Rhys Ashworth and Jacqui McQueen meet their new roommate, Ally Gorman. (First appearance of the character)
- 3rd February - Phoebe Jackson is kidnapped by Deena Hardman.
- 8th February - Neil Cooper crashes Bart McQueen's car into a rubbish skip.
- 15th February - Darren Osborne and Nancy Hayton marry in a surprise wedding ceremony, organised by Darren.
- 23rd February - Lacey Kane arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 5th March - Nancy Osborne discovers that she is pregnant.
- 6th March - George Smith is kidnapped by Deena Hardman after being betrayed by Phoebe Jackson.
- 13th March - Deena and Graham Hardman are arrested for child exploitation after one of their "clients", Mr. Evans, is revealed to be an undercover police officer.
- 19th March - Barney Harper-McBride is attacked.
- 27th March - Ash Kane collapses after contracting meningitis.
- 28th March - Nancy Osborne suffers a miscarriage.
- 13th April - Scott Sabeka's grandmother suffers a fatal heart attack. New Hollyoaks Community College teacher Jen Gilmore arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 17th April - Phoebe Jackson accidentally starts a fire at Hollyoaks Sixth Form College. Tilly Evans, who is trapped in a closet, is injured after falling whilst attempting to make an escape.
- 18th April - Phoebe Jackson is arrested for arson.
- 20th April - The funeral of Scott Sabeka's grandmother takes place.
- 26th April - Neil Cooper is arrested for possession of an illegal substance.
- 11th May - Simon Walker arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 16th May - Joel Dexter is stabbed by Casper. Josh Ashworth returns to the village. (First appearance of the character since 2010)
- 21st May - The McQueen family are arrested for possession of cannabis after the police discover Bart McQueen's cannabis farm in the family home.
- 24th May - Nancy Osborne discovers that she is pregnant.
- 4th June - Myra McQueen is sentenced to six months imprisonment for possession of cannabis.
- 8th June - Dodger Savage discovers that Dirk Savage is not his biological father.
- 15th June - Carmel Valentine is hospitalised after Michaela McQueen's tanning lamp explodes in her face.
- 19th June - Struggling to come to terms with her severe permanent facial scarring, Carmel Valentine climbs onto the roof of Dee Valley Hospital with the intention of taking her own life.
- 21st June - Rhys Ashworth is arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour.
- 26th June - Mercedes McQueen intentionally stabs herself with a kitchen knife in an attempt to frame Mitzeee Minniver.
- 27th June - Mitzeee Minniver is arrested for the attempted murder of Mercedes McQueen.
- 29th June - Brendan Brady discovers the body of Lynsey Nolan, murdered by an unknown assailant.
- 4th July - Texas Longford receives a phone call from imprisoned serial killer Silas Blissett. (First appearance of Silas since 2011)
- 5th July - India Longford begins appearing in the nightmares of her sister, Texas. (First appearance of the character since 2011 and final appearance)
- 6th July - Texas Longford visits Silas Blissett in the psychiatric hospital to confront him over the murder of Lynsey Nolan. (First appearance of Silas since 2011)
- 10th July - Will Savage is arrested on suspicion of murdering Lynsey Nolan.
- 18th July - Silas Blissett escapes from the psychiatric hospital.
- 19th July - Texas Longford is kidnapped by Silas Blissett. Silas later releases her and flees onto a bus full of young women. (Last appearance of Silas until 2016)
- 25th July - Phoebe Jackson collapses from alcohol poisoning. Damon is kidnapped by Brendan Brady.
- 27th July - Callum Kane is arrested after going on a drunken rampage.
- 2nd August - Scott Sabeka leaves the village for Thailand. (Final appearance of the character)
- 8th August - Amy Barnes leaves the village. (Last appearance of the character until 2013)
- 14th August - During the drug heist with Brendan Brady, Simon Walker shoots a police officer. However, it's revealed that the shooting was staged and that Walker is an undercover officer.
- 15th August - Doug Carter proposes to Leanne Holiday, who accepts.
- 20th August - Jacqui McQueen discovers that Paul Browning is Lynsey Nolan's murderer after finding her scarf in his drawers.
- 21st August - In flashback scenes dating to 29th June 2012, Paul Browning confesses murdering Lynsey Nolan to Mercedes McQueen. After trying to escape, Mercedes is kidnapped by Paul. However, the police catch Paul and arrest him for the murder of Lynsey.
- 22nd August - Tilly Evans and Neil Cooper are arrested after Tilly steals Jen Gilmore's car.
- 24th August - Riley Costello proposes to Mercedes McQueen, who accepts.
- 31st August - Josh Ashworth leaves the village with Michaela McQueen for Ibiza. (Final appearance of both characters)
- 4th September - Jack Osborne suffers a heart attack.
- 7th September - Doug Carter and Leanne Holiday prepare to marry for £20,000 from Doug's parents. However, Doug jilts Leanne at the altar, not wanting to risk his relationship with Ste Hay. Dennis Savage proposes to Leanne, who accepts, and the pair marry in a non-legal ceremony.
- 11th September - Mitzeee Minniver is sentenced to seven years imprisonment. Joel Dexter's mother Marie Fielding arrives in the village for his birthday. (First appearance of the character)
- 12th September - Marie Fielding leaves the village to reluctantly to return to her abusive husband Mick Cornus, despite son Joel Dexter's pleas. (Last appearance of Marie until 2024)
- 14th September - Simon Walker's brother, Cameron Walker, dies from an infection. Whilst incarcerated, Mitzeee Minniver sees a vision of her mother, Trish. (First appearance of Trish since 2011 and last appearance until 2021)
- 17th September - Mitzeee Minniver escapes from a psychiatric hospital with cellmate Lauren after the prison van is involved in an accident. Mick Cornus is kidnapped by Brendan Brady and step-son Joel Dexter.
- 18th September - Mick Cornus falls from the top of a lighthouse after being pushed off by Joel Dexter in defence of Brendan Brady, and is presumed dead.
- 19th September - Mick Cornus is revealed to have survived the fall from the top of a lighthouse but is suffocated with plastic by Simon Walker. Flo Brady collapses after developing a chest infection.
- 21st September - Learning that she knew of the abuse at the hands of his father, Brendan Brady suffocates his grandmother, Flo, in a bear hug. After smashing up the holiday home, Brendan is injured when he is thrown from the house in an explosion.
- 24th September - Doug Carter proposes to Ste Hay, who accepts.
- 26th September - Carl Costello returns to the village after learning of Riley Costello and Mercedes McQueen's engagement. Bobby Costello goes missing. (First appearance of Carl since 2011)
- 1st October - Mercedes Fisher, revealed to have staged Bobby Costello's kidnap, takes Bobby to the roof of an apartment block and threatens to jump.
- 2nd October - Nancy Osborne goes into premature labour. Mercedes Fisher is arrested for kidnapping Bobby Costello. Simon Walker attempts to shoot Ste Hay, but is interrupted by Brendan Brady and Riley Costello is shot in the ensuing struggle.
- 3rd October - Riley Costello dies in hospital after being shot by Brendan Brady and Simon Walker. Mitzeee Minniver is arrested for her escape from prison. Declan Brady is kidnapped by Simon Walker, who gives him an overdose of drugs. He is rescued by Brendan Brady, Doug Carter and Ste Hay.
- 4th October - Nancy Osborne gives birth to a premature son.
- 8th October - Esther Bloom crashes Ash Kane's motorbike.
- 15th October - Tony Hutchinson proposes to Cindy Longford, but she rejects after realising that he believes that she is pregnant.
- 19th October - Cindy Longford proposes to Tony Hutchinson, who accepts.
- 24th October - Lynsey Nolan's funeral takes place.
- 31st October - Tony Hutchinson is seriously injured after crashing a minibus.
- 2nd November - Jono proposes to Ruby Button.
- 6th November - Joel Dexter is arrested for shoplifting. Mitzeee Minniver's sister, Maxine, arrives in the village. (First appearance of the character)
- 14th November - Holly Cunningham returns to the village for her mum's wedding to Tony Hutchinson. Tony marries Cindy Longford, whilst Doug Carter marries Ste Hay. After the ceremony, the catering van - driven by Maddie Morrison with her friends inside - swerves to avoid Leah Barnes and hits Ste before crashing through the venue.
- 15th November - Neil Cooper is killed when the bus explodes. Maddie Morrison is hit by a falling door. Rhys Ashworth dies of injuries sustained in the bus crash. (Last appearance of Rhys until 2014 and final appearances of Neil and Maddie)
- 16th November - Sinead O'Connor discovers that she is pregnant. Jono dies from undiscovered injuries sustained in the bus crash in the arms of his girlfriend, Ruby Button. (Final appearance of the character)
- 20th November - Ste Hay awakens from his coma.
- 21st November - Dodger Savage meets his biological father, Patrick Blake, and sister, Sienna Blake. (First appearance of Patrick and Sienna)
- 26th November - Maddie Morrison's funeral takes place.
- 27th November - Ally Gorman leaves the village as he is arrested for fraud. (Final appearance of the character)
- 30th November - Jim McGinn arrives in the village as Mercedes McQueen's barrister. (First appearance of the character)
- 3rd December - Mercedes McQueen's trial for perverting the course of justice begins.
- 6th December - Mercedes McQueen is found not guilty of perverting the course of justice.
- 11th December - The memorial for Neil Cooper, Maddie Morrison and Jono takes place.
- 12th December - Rhys Ashworth's funeral takes place, for which his mother, Suzanne Ashworth, returns for before leaving afterwards. (Last appearance of Suzanne until 2024)
- 14th December - Bart McQueen proposes to Sinead O'Connor.
