Burgermeister Meisterburger is the main antagonist of the 1970 stop-motion holiday special Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. He is the mayor of Sombertown and as such is responsible for all of the gloom and misery that pervades the town.
He was voiced by the late veteran actor Paul Frees.
What Makes Him a Hate Sink?[]
- His very first scene has him refusing to take care of baby Kris Kringle, who was left at his door by his parent(s). Despite the note asking nicely for him to take care of the baby, he demands that Grimsley, his right-hand man, take the "brat" to the orphanage.
- He is one of the few Rankin/Bass villains (if not the only one) who has no redeeming qualities and never has a chance to reform. After he slips on a toy duck and falls, he passes a law against toys that involves arresting children for even possessing one. It would have been one thing if he simply forbade them from playing with toys in the street, but he outright makes it a crime to even have one in your own home. He states that a family will be arrested if they have so much as one marble or even one half of a jack. He also believes that toys hate him, which is a very ridiculous thing for anyone to say, let alone a mayor.
- He mentions that his idea of a perfect day is one where everybody is glum.
- After Kris Kringle hands him a yo-yo as a present, he enjoys it at first and it seems like he has a change of heart, but then Grimsley reminds him that he's breaking his own law and he's back to his evil ways within seconds.
- He's rather stupid, not watching where he's going (which is what causes him to trip on a toy in the first place) and not bothering to have his soldiers search the stockings hanging over the fireplaces in the homes they search. This proves to be his undoing, as the stockings end up becoming a Christmas tradition.
- When he finally resorts to arresting the entire Kringle family, he goes as far as to burn an entire pile of toys in front of the children, telling them all that they will never play again.
- His wanted poster for Kris says that he's wanted dead or alive. This means that he's okay with having Kris killed. All over toys.
- He never gets any real punishment for all he does beyond occasionally suffering pain. He spends the remainder of his life in power ordering his men to hunt Kris and his allies down.
- Even the citizens of Sombertown never liked him and were all the more glad when the Meisterburgers finally died off.
