“ | Now that I've saved enough to buy this Shushinator, soon, the whole world will be as quiet as my library! | ” |
"Shush Hour" is the first segment of the twenty-seventh episode of the first season of Hamster & Gretel, and the fifty-second episode overall. It is paired with "I Was a Teenage Mad Scientist" and premiered on Disney Channel on November 4, 2023.[2]
Hamster, Gretel and Kevin visit the library, as Gretel is one day due on a hero report on herself and has to do cited research. While Gretel does so with Hamster, Kevin encounters a librarian who desires to take away everyone's voice with the Shushinator.
Plot[]
At school, Ms. Jamanpour gives her class an assignment in which they must talk about their hero, with Gretel choosing to do hers about herself after Bailey is asked to choose another topic. However, Gretel procrastinates until the day before the assignment is due, prompting Kevin to take her to the library to do research. While there, Kevin overhears the librarian unveiling her plan to make the entire city as quiet as her library using her Shushinator, a device she purchased from Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Unable to contact Hamster and Gretel due to confiscating their phones for the duration of their research session, Kevin attempts to intervene, only to have his voice stolen. Meanwhile, Hamster and Gretel find that the majority of the instances in which they saved the city were the result of Kevin's ideas.
As the librarian silences everyone and everything in town, Kevin encounters a book detailing how to reflect sound, which inspires him to use his, Hamster, and Gretel's phones to play kazoo songs in order to distract the librarian. Eventually, Kevin manages to destroy the Shushinator, reversing its silencing effects. Hamster and Gretel then arrive to defeat the librarian, after which Gretel decides to use Kevin as her research topic.

Memorable quotes[]
Kevin: I'll be close if you need me. Hamster, you keep her on task. I'm gonna go browse. Gretel: But what if some supervillain attacks? Kevin: It's a library. I'm sure I can handle anything that comes up... except maybe Hemmingway. Ugh, we get it, Ernest. There's an old man and a sea! You'll get that joke in high school! Hamster: Oh, we get it; it's just not funny. |
Librarian: Noise, noise, all day, every day! The library was my only refuge, and I've found my calling―telling people to shush all day long! But now, my shush isn't enough, so I needed a more permanent solution. (The librarian uncovers a gramophone-like device.) Woman: (on phone) Um, so to be clear, miss, you need to reschedule your teeth cleaning? Librarian: Oh, yes. Tomorrow afternoon at 3:30. |
Hamster: Here's one about that time we defeated that giant mutant burrito with a truckload of hot sauce. Gretel: Ooh, I remember that! We are so smart. Hamster: Actually, that was Kevin's idea too. Your idea was just to eat it. Gretel: It would have worked if we hadn't just had lunch! |
Doofenshmirtz: Ever feel like shushing the entire Tri-State Area? Try the new Shushinator from Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated! Female Announcer: Six easy payments. Doofenshmirtz: Oh, shush! |
Cop: Do not cut the blue wire! (The man cuts the red wire.) Man: My egg timer's fixed! Thanks, honey! See you at dinner. Cop: Please don't call me at work anymore. |

Background information[]
Trivia[]
- A couple of off-screen villains are revealed in this episode: a killer dung beetle that was defeated by tangling it in a kite, and a giant mutant burrito that was defeated with a truckload of hot sauce.
Allusions[]
- The title of this episode is a pun on "rush hour", the time of day in which traffic on roads is at its heaviest.
- Rush Hour - Due to the above, the episode title may also refer to this 1998 buddy-cop action comedy film directed by Brett Ratner, as well as the franchise it had spawned.
- The Little Mermaid - Kevin losing his voice from the Shushinator is similar to how Ariel lost hers.
- The Sound and the Fury - While running from the Librarian, a book called The Sound and the Hurry by William Fakener falls on Kevin. This is likely a reference to The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner.
- Phineas and Ferb - The Shushinator follows the naming convention of many of Doofenshmirtz's devices. Additionally, it is shown that Doofenshmirtz advertised the Shushinator as a purchasable device through a video on the internet for an online shopping network. Furthermore, the Shushinator bears a logo reading "D.E.Inc." on its side, in the same font that the Doofenshmirtz Evil Inc. logo is usually stylized in.
- Writer Joshua Pruett revealed that only the D.E.Inc. logo on the Shushinator was in his first draft, while Doofenshmirtz's cameo was added later.[3]
Errors[]
- The official synopsis states that Hamster has to work with Kevin to stop the librarian while Gretel has to do the report herself; in the actual episode, Hamster was helping Gretel the whole time with her report, while Kevin had to stop the villain alone.
