Battle of Aprilius One

The Battle of Aprilius One is the first official conflict of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, featured in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Prelude[]

Following the Assault on Armory One, the crew of the LHM-BB01 Minerva were tasked with hunting down and stopping the members of Phantom Pain and retrieving the stolen Second Stage Gundams. However, in their pursuit, they were diverted to stop another act - a group of ZAFT terrorists who aligned with the late Patrick Zala's goals of eradicating Naturals had attached rockets to the ravaged PLANT colony Junius Seven, intending on dropping it onto the Earth. Despite the combined forces of the Minerva, Joule Team, and unseen help from the Junk Guild and Serpent Tail, a massive portion of the colony descended onto the Earth. The resulting "Break The World" incident ravaged much of the Earth in the process.

Under the control of Lord Djibril, the newest leader of the anti-Coordinator organization Blue Cosmos, the Earth Alliance revealed evidence that Coordinators caused the incident and demanded that ZAFT stand down, its Supreme Council dissolved and all of the PLANTs to be submitted for inspection or they would be attacked. Despite Supreme Chairman Gilbert Durandal wanting to talk things through, the Earth Alliance opted to launch their forces for a preemptive strike on the PLANT colonies, claiming that ZAFT had refused to turn over those responsible for the attack.

The Battle[]

The Earth Alliance Fleet, comprised of Drake-class and Nelson-class ships armed with GAT-02L2 Dagger L units with and without Doppelhorn Strikers, was launched, met by ZGMF-1017 GINN, ZGMF-515 CGUE, ZGMF-601R GuAIZ R and ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior units along with a ZGMF-1000/A1 Gunner ZAKU Warrior piloted by Dearka Elsman, a ZGMF-1001/M Blaze ZAKU Phantom piloted by Heine Westenfluss and a ZGMF-1001/K Slash ZAKU Phantom piloted by Yzak Joule.^[1] During the battle, Martian representative Ergnes Brahe was given permission by Chairman Durandal to assist ZAFT and entered the battlefield in his GSF-YAM01 Δ Astray.^[2]

As the two sides fought, a surprise attack fleet comprised of Agamemnon-class carriers carrying the brand new GAT-04 Windam armed with Multi Striker Packs were launched, spotted by a ZGMF-LRR704B GINN Long Range Reconnaissance Type, noting the markings on the launchers meant they had nuclear missiles. Realizing that the units attacking them were nothing more than decoys, Yzak, Dearka, and others broke off to stop the Multi Striker Windams from attacking the PLANTs. At the same time, three Nazca-class destroyers were launched, one outfitted with a Neutron Stampeder. Despite Yzak's and the others' attempts to stop the attack, their shots missed the launched nukes before the Neutron Stampeder was fired. The shot was complete devastation as the missiles - launched, unlaunched, and still loaded in their ships - were all detonated, completely eradicating the surprise fleet.^[1]

Aftermath[]

The battle was a humiliating loss for the Earth Alliance, effectively allowing ZAFT to bring the fight to the Earth without the fear of another nuclear assault. The Earth Alliance, in turn, would seek to force numerous countries, including the Orb Union, into their fight to bolster their numbers.
