The Freight Train[1] is a well car in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online.
Design[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
The train car resembles an older TTX 53 foot well car in overall shape, apart from being much shorter than its real-life inspiration. It is stated to carry 20-ft shipping containers, although the containers carried are usually 40 ft long. They have a maximum gross weight capacity of 52,900 lbs (24 metric Tons) and run on 38-inch wheels. There are several markings on the sides, including D-Rail logos.
There are three variants:
- The first one,
freightcar
, is a long well car that is always empty. It has seven sections on the side walls and large walkways on each end, fitted with access ladders, guard rails and brake cylinders. It spawns in a variety of primary colors. - The second one,
freightcont1
, is a short well car that is always loaded with a shipping container marked with D-Rail logos. It has five sections on the side walls and smaller walkways on each end, only fitted with access ladders and guard rails. The containers sit at the same level as the walkways and, by clipping the Rockstar Editor camera through the container, one can see a darkened interior with a brighter rear end (usually denoting functional doors). The wellcar always spawn in a white primary color, while the container is painted with a secondary color. - The third one,
freightcont2
, is a derivative of the previous model, but the container is marked with a Union Flyer logo on the front, Lando logos on the sides, and Santos Steamer, L.S. Dart and R&R Freight logos on the rear. The container sits in a slightly lower height than the walkways and, by clipping the Rockstar Editor camera through the container, one can see that it has no interior. It shares the same color set and distribution as the previous variant.
Behaviour[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
Like the Freight Train, the train car cannot be destroyed. They will simply push or phase through any obstacle on the tracks, and will resist any explosions. The player can jump and stand on the train car while it is moving, which makes for a great way to lose a wanted level, as the player can usually lose the cops when the train enters a tunnel. Care should be taken when jumping towards the freight cars or the locomotive, as the character may fall off the train.
The freightcar
variant is capable of carrying a vehicle with no severe issues, although the narrow width of the train car often prevents players from entering the car again and getting the vehicle off. Motorcycles are easier to manage, but they gradually slide backwards or end up falling to the rearmost section of the train car. The wellcar variants are much easier to board than the locomotive and other train cars, and are also useful for cover.
Technically being vehicles, all variants have their own handling line. While the container variants use the same data from the Freight Train, the wellcar variant uses a dedicated handling line, though it is mostly identical.

Variants[]
- A fourth variant of the train car,
freightcar2
, was introduced in the Los Santos Tuners update, appearing only in The E.C.U Job/Finale. It is virtually identical to the regularfreightcar
, but extra collision bounds are assigned for the container props.
Static Variants[]
- Static props of the wellcar variant can be seen in railyards around the state, which seem to have different markings (though retaining the D-Rail logo), parking brake wheels mounted on the sides of each bogie, and in some cases, only two brake cylinders. These can be found either empty or with a loaded container (Jetsam, Bilgeco, Lando-Corp, Krapea, GoPostal, Post OP). In Mirror Park Railyard, containers can be found double-stacked and there are also shorter 20-ft containers in some cars. These containers sit much deeper than the ones found on the shorter, functional wellcars.
A wrecked variant can be seen not so far from the La Mesa branch of Los Santos Customs, which has no markings and only one brake cylinder, mounted transversely.
- During the mission Derailed, the target container car has a more detailed interior and functional doors that Michael must blow open in order to access the payload.
Trivia[]
Grand Theft Auto V and Online[]
- While the wellcar variants are assigned an "A-END" and a "B-END", the container variants seem to be assigned the same "A-END" for both of its ends, likely a result of missing/mirrored textures due to its shorter body.
- In addition, some of the warning stickers on the rear-right side of the container variants are floating.
